OK, my daughter has decided to come home now...

Recommended Posts

Have her read books available online or from the library, discuss them with you, and then write context papers, approach papers, and/or literary essays on what she read.

For geography I use the Map Trek series and the Ultimate Geography timeline book.

:iagree: Also, can you find out what her current teachers were planning to cover for the rest of the year and either borrow the books from the school, or get some on similar topics from the public library?

Best wishes to both of you during the transition,

Brenda

A great free source for physical geography is http://www.seterra.net/

For cultural geography, this book used is inexpensive and quite good.

For English, make sure she's got the five paragraph essay down. Since the goal is to learn to write well, I'd let her choose some topics and make others related to literature - choose some books. Does she use a vocabulary workbook at school now? If so, just finish that. If not, I'd suggest using something for vocabulary. Worldly Wise 3000 has a site which is free. The words are pronounced, the definitions given and there are games to play to help with the memorization. http://www.wordlywise3000.com/ The books cost about $10 and might be helpful.

But once you've done that, you might want to have her write some essays that are not the five paragraph format. Writing professors at the college I'm at absolutely hate the five paragraph essay. They pretty much fail anything that's turned in in that format. Their feeling is that you write the essay that the topic demands, instead of trying to cram it into a certain format.

However, the five paragraph format is likely what will do best on the ACT/SAT writing test.

the Glencoe site for Alabama is great! They allow so much more access than most states.

Thanks for posting that link.

To the OP: on the Glencoe link there are other resources that can be accessed from the left side. There were some great math workbooks and other subject resources that could be helpful in planning for a few months.
