He also needs some time to solidify Language Arts.) Some of my ideas instead are: -more science -current events (especially election) -government study (see above) -read National Geographic together -study different geographical areas including missionaries, etc. Anyone ever do this? When our DSs were grades 7 and 8, we took a year off from History and did a world cultures/geography and comparative religions focus. It was great! We pulled it together ourselves, using all kinds of things (listed below) -- so, once you settle on an overall idea of what will be *your* substitute for History, then you can start researching your options to flesh it out. :) Have FUN in your "break-from-History" year! Warmest regards, Lori D. - some books from the old Sonlight 5 core (Eastern Hemisphere), and books set in other countries from other SL cores above that - library books on cultural/historical fiction from other nations - made our own atlas pages - Sheppard Software free online geography games - played games, and cooked/ate foods from different countries - watched feature films and travelogues set in different countries - read lots of children's picture books of myths from various cultures (the artwork is usually in the style of the culture -- really adds to your visual understanding - did searches of YouTube and watched fascinating aspects of different cultural aspects - Milliken publisher's "Great Religions of the World: Inside ______" series - library books, websites, and other resources on different religions Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What did you do instead? This sounds like a great idea! When we get to that age/stage with our youngest (twins), we're thinking of taking a "year off" from history, too. We thought about doing a year of Geography, but I like your ideas better -- more science + elections/government. What did you do instead? SL Eastern Hemisphere with my big boys. My oldest did SL 200 church history and my middle did WP Sea and Sky. My youngest is also 9yo and next year we will be taking a year off from history. I have waffled around, but now I think I am mostly organized to do a year of cultural geography. ElizabethB Posted February 3, 2012 Share Posted February 3, 2012 We are enjoying a year off from history and our Geography studies with ECC. I like the way the science is integrated. The science is a bit light for us, we supplement, but what is there is nicely integrated into the Geography studies. We did RS4K Physics earlier to supplement and last year did Chemistry, my daughter will start the next level of Chemistry on her own soon. It has been a nice break, we are all enjoying it.
