jennthmg
I have to choose 1 for a high school lit class I'll be teaching. Are there study guides with one or the other? (A great study guide might push me toward one or the other.) Which one did your kids find less unsettling? Thanks, Jenn
cindergretta
My absolute favorite book as an early teen was The Count of Monte Cristo. Beyond that, I am of absolutely NO help. :tongue_smilie:
plansrme
My 14 yo has read both recently, so I posed this question to her. She immediately said COMC because there is less superfluous language, more action and less Sixteenth Century politics. She liked both but did not hesitate one second to vote for the Count. jennthmg
Has anyone used a study or teacher guide to help with these? Even one on an adult level would be helpful!
jhschool
Although Count of Monte Cristo has a horrid execution scene description, it is one of my favorite books of all time. Man in the Iron Mask is --although it is a wonderful book -- a little bit boring at times -- dare I say that? Both of them have TONS of history background to learn -- Count has the whole Napoleon coming back thing, and Man in the Iron Mask has the Sun King stuff. Now, you should know that Man in the Iron Mask is a Three Musketeers book, so you should probably read that first (although you don't have to in order to enjoy the book). For Count of Monte Cristo you don't have to read other books. Also, I love Count because of all the homeschooling Abbe Faria does in jail! When I was a kid I thought it was so wonderful they did that with no school, no books, and no anything!
lewelma
I am currently listening to The Count of Monte Cristo, and I loooooooove it ! One of the best classics out there IMHO. Ruth
Sebastian (a lady)
I have to choose 1 for a high school lit class I'll be teaching. Are there study guides with one or the other? (A great study guide might push me toward one or the other.) Which one did your kids find less unsettling? Thanks, Jenn I've read COMC a couple times. I think it's a great book. Man in the Iron Mask does suffer from being a sequel. I'm reading it right now and find that it suffers from the fact that I read The Three Musketeers about 20 years ago. He plunges right into the story without much back story about the former musketeers and their character. What do you mean by "unsettling"? What are your concerns? jennthmg
I've never read either. This will be my first time through (while I teach it). Each of the movies I saw were GOOD, but just a tad disturbing (I'm a sissy.)
Kristin in Hawaii
I too remember it as one of my all-time favorite books -- no study guide needed... just enjoy it!

plansrme
I posted my 14 yo's thoughts above, but I should also have mentioned that I read COMC (but not Iron Mask) just before she did, so within the past few months, and it was a fabulous read. I loved it. Such an engrossing story. And the ending! You could devote an entire class to discussing the ending, perhaps comparing it to the whole Team Edward/Team whatever-the-other-Twilight-guy's name is, but with the genders reversed. Terri ETA: Anyone else remember the mention of COMC in the Shawshank Redemption? Tim Robbins' character is organizing the prison library and tells his assistant COMC is about a prison break, so the assistant suggests shelving it under "educational."
