Jean in Newcastle Posted September 29, 2011 Share Posted September 29, 2011 I had a text message on my cell phone saying that my credit card from a bank that I do not use is now discontinued. It gives a number to call. Is this something I have to check into because someone could have opened an account in my name (identity theft)? You call them and they get your credit card info, then they go on a shopping spree, knowing that you don't use that card and probably won't know about it for a month at least! Maus Posted September 29, 2011 Share Posted September 29, 2011 It's a scam. DH had an alert about it in his data security newsletter. There is a phone version, too. It's usually a well-known bank. I got a call and almost bit because we have had a mortgage through the named bank. I actually pressed '1,' but when it asked me to enter the credit card number, it dawned on me that we'd never had a credit card there. So, I was saved from my own stupidity merely by chance.
