Whereneverever
First- I've already called his doctor and he has an appointment in 2.5 hours. This morning my toddler woke up and would not stand up. He won't put his feet on the floor. I've checked him really carefully and I don't see any swelling, redness, weird bug bites or anything. He has not fallen. Last night he was at a picnic and played fine. Any ideas?

No crying unless I try to put him down. He lets me touch them. It's very weird.

Robyn
This happens to my ds5 from time to time. I am going to ask for a referral to a podiatrist when we go to the pedi next week. I notice it usually happens after he has been running around all day the day before in shoes without good arch support: his crocs or winter boots. It usually bothers him for a few hours and then he can walk fine later in the day.
Jewish Mama of 4
Are his joints (ankle/knee/hips) hot to the touch? Does he complain when you try to move his joints even when he is laying down? My sister and I grew up with JRA (juvenile rheumatoid arthritis). Extremely painful after running around the day before. Usually couldn't walk the next day. JudoMom
Isn't there a virus that can cause this? I'm thinking it can cause hip pain. I googled and got this, but I don't know if that's what I'm thinking of. My middle boy has JRA, and his symptoms started at age 2. If joint pain persists with your boy, this is something to consider. It's rare, though, in boys and in toddlers.
Whereneverever
Is there any specific tests or anything to look for what is wrong?
mo2
Did you find out what was wrong?
Jewish Mama of 4
If you think it might be JRA you would need to have your regular doctor recommend a pediatric rheumatologist for your child to be evaluated.
Julie Smith
Oh, Oh, Pick me. I might know. Once years ago when my eldest was 4? He woke up one morning feeling just fine but would not walk. He would crawl, climb, ... but break down in tears about having to take a single step. So after HOURS in the hospital, Xrays, and being refereed to a specialist: Turns out he had a 'cold'? that caused some fluid in his hip sockets to swell making it impossible to walk. No medicine needed, and he was walking again in 3 days with no problems what so ever. Supposedly this happens to some kids. Some kids get runny noses, some stop being able to walk. :glare: It doesn't happen past about age 5.

She didn't walk at all for a few days and her fever had broke by that point. I was super stressed out, but she was totally fine! So anything is possible. Hope he's feeling better! It was very odd.

Whereneverever
I ended up not taking him at all! The NP told me over the phone to give him Motrin. I laid him down for an early nap so we could make the appointment. Well, I woke him up and he hopped out of bed and took off running. :glare: I called the NP and she said that since I didn't see an injury and he was not using it fine that it was probably a muscle cramp or something and to watch him. He was fine the rest of the day. To think I was worried he had a fracture or JRA or some sort of doom virus.

With DS, the problem/pain was in his calves and achilles tendons.
