rookie
I have three loads of laundry that need to get done NOW and have run out of laundry detergent...... What can I substitute? Thanks!
Wabi Sabi
I used to wash cloth diapers on occasion with a little squirt of Dawn dishsoap instead of detergent. I'd imagine it'd be fine for clothing as well. Maybe a scoop of baking soda, Borax or OxyClean too if you have it?
TheCoffeeChick
If they are not too nasty, I would think a scoop of baking soda would be fine.
Carrie12345
I'm running ds's baseball uniform through with a bit of Dawn right now. :)

bookfiend
Dishwasher soap/powder - be careful and read the side label, some contain bleach so you may need to "pre-disolve." Works best if it contains phosphates, no green lectures please. ETA: Dishwasher soap works because it is low sudding, unlike Dawn or shampoo which have the potential to create Lucille Ball type bubbles. Gooblink
The homemade detergent I make is washing soda, borax and grated bar soap, using 2 parts bar soap to 1 part each soda and borax. I use about a 1/4 cup of the mixture per load. In a pinch I might substitute the washing soda for baking soda, and Oxy Clean (if you have it) or white vinegar for the borax, with whatever bar (or dish) soap I have on hand. MamaT
I have substituted dishwashing liquid several times with no problem.

PentecostalMom
Cascade, or any other powdered dishwasher detergent works great, too. Especially useful for removing stains from baseball uniforms.
