momtolgd
DD8 has requested animal books for Christmas...what books would you recommend? She has one of the DK See How They Grow books and really likes it, and asked for another one. I would like to get her some type of Animal Encyclopedia that would be good for her age as well. She is a good reader, and is reading the chapter book regular readers for Sonlight 3 with no trouble. I would love suggestions! Thanks! :001_smile:
walkermamaof4
Do you have the Thornton Burgess books? So wonderful, and she can listen along on librivox too.
aggieamy
James Herriot's Treasury for Children. Wonderful. The illustrations are great too. We also have it as an audiobook and if I had a dollar for every time one of my kids requested the Smudge the Little Lamb story ... well I'd have been able to buy them a lamb. ScoutTN
Marguerite Henry's books - Misty, King of the Wind etc. We too love the James Herriot books. My 3yo often asks for, "Smudge the widde wost wamb." I loved reading Rascal, Mr Frisby and Black Beauty when I was growing up.

love3es
Along the lines of Thorton Burgess (which my boys love) is also Arthur Scott Bailey.
Nancy Ann
Your daughter may just be on the cusp of being too old for these books but I love this art book series and think they are great for all ages. http://www.amazon.com/Come-Look-Me-Animals-Art/dp/1565660137/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1290539641&sr=8-3 I think an animal encyclopedia is great. I would steer away from the Usborne First Encyclopedia because it's really small and for 6 year olds. I would think a nice big one from National Geographic or DK would be great. Annabel Lee
The Kingfisher Illustrated Animal Encyclopedia is excellent and should keep her engrossed for some time (regular version, not a children's version). Jim Arnosky's animal and nature books are certainly not encyclopedias, but are non-fiction w/ beautiful sketch & watercolor illustrations.
