dovrar
I'm looking to compile a book list on church history. Looking to create a list that has books from different denominational viewpoints. Any ideas?:bigear:
Grace is Sufficient
Sorry, I don't quite remember the author... last name of Houghton or something similar? I think it has a teacher edition and a student edition. I would say viewpoint is Protestant -- can't say more specifically. MamaSheep
I don't feel qualified to recommend books on other people's denominations, but here's one on the history of mine (LDS): http://deseretbook.com/Our-Heritage-Brief-History-Church-Jesus-Christ-Latter-day-Saints-LDS-Distribution-Center/i/3254028 And I haven't read this one yet, but it looks interesting to me. It's supposed to be just straightforward, factual information about how the Bible came to be: http://www.amazon.com/How-Got-Bible-Neil-Lightfoot/dp/0801072611/ref=lh_ni_t_
MamaT
We use The Church in History by Kuiper. It is from a Reformed/Protestant view so I'm not sure that's what you are looking for.
thowell
The Trail of Blood by J.M. Carroll is from a Baptist perspective.
dovrar
I'm not sure EXACTLY what I'm looking for either  Just hoping to get feedback from people who are in different denominations and therefore can give recommendations for something that comes from their viewpoint. Janice H
For the Pre-Reformation Eastern point of view of Church history try this book, now free online www.oca.org/OCorthfaith.asp (Note, there was only one "denomination" until about 1054. Historians talk of cracks in the culture and the Latin vs. Greek language divide of the Church developing well before 1054.) http://www.religionfacts.com/christianity/charts/church_fathers.htm On the left hand side of this page are links to other charts like "Denomination Beliefs" and "Protestants and Reformers". The church fathers and reformers charts have a little icon or other image of the person on the far left, making them attractive summaries. Good-natured informed discussions about Mary, apostolic succession, the Pope, St. Peter and more www.theologyweb.com/campus/archive/index.php/t-30332.html http://www.davidmacd.com/catholic/mary_in_the_bible.htm This interesting page with many links down both sides and across the top briefly talks about the Inquisition and many other "hot button" topics. The web site's author strikes me as careful and sincere, but he is not a religion scholar. If you find any of these issues interesting, you will want to do your own research. This looks good http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/bytopic/movementsdenominationstraditions Oodles of links to articles. Primary Source pre-1000 St. Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Our public library had a copy. Here is one of the free Google books versions http://books.google.com/books?id=OOSHpi4D7FQC&pg=PA3&dq=venerable+bede&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=3#v=onepage&q&f=false I linked to the beginning of the book; it is a most important medieval secular as well as Church history source. The table of contents will show a varied source of topics. It is not an overwhelming text, and reading just some of the chapters would be doable and enjoyable. Beth in SW WA
Church History in Plain Language by Bruce Shelley I'm reading this now. I can't put it down - despite the distractions of Thanksgiving vacation. I'm entranced. Folks, read this book!!!! I'm mid-way through the book and am beyond enlightened. I had so many gaps in my church history. This is just what I needed. :) Edited November 27, 2010 by Beth in SW WA fixed link

AudreyTN
We attend a Pentecostal church. My husband is working on his Minister's License and 2000 Years of Charismatic Christianity was one of his required books. I've read about 1/2 of it and it's really good. Janie
Already suggested is Sketches and Shelley's Plain Language to which I'd add Trial and Triumph (Hannula) and Mindy Withrow's books.
vonfirmath
Church History in Plain Language by Bruce Shelley I highly recommend this one. They used it in my church history course at theological college.
