Classically Minded
Our choice for music is not working out for us. We chose to use a book about composers, basically a biography of famous ones and a sample of their music. However, dd6 has had no other music introduction and she doesn't know what a composer is, what certain instruments in an orchestra are, etc. So I realized that she needs a basic introduction to music. Can anyone recommend a good, beginner music curriculum that would work for 1st grade level? Something that tells what music is, different types of instruments, etc. Thanks in advance! ;)
crazyforlatin
These are not curricula but picture books that I read to DD recently; she especially enjoyed The Composer is Dead. meet me in paris
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has an excellent website for kids with so much introductory information in a fun format. http://www.dsokids.com/ If you want more of a curriculum, they have a huge set of teacher's guides via free PDF: http://www.dsokids.com/resources/lessonplans.aspx Very age-appropriate. Shifra
Young Person's Guide to Music History by Carolyn Jones Campbell (ISBN: 073999715576) is very good and cheap. You will need to get some CDs of the music written about in the book (like The Toy Symphony), but you can probably get some of them from your local library. It is published by Willis Music, and if you cannot find it locally or through amazon.com, it is distributed by Hal Leonard.
Suzanne115
We loved Calvert's "Discoveries in Music". It is DVD based. My daughter learned a lot and really, really enjoyed every lesson. Suzanne

Suzanne I looked this up and it gave an option to pay "tuition". Is that what I pay for the items?
Momling
It might not have originally been intended as a 'curriculum', but my girls and I use this: http://www.naxos.com/naxosbooks/mfcmb/index.html We read a one or two page spread, listen to the music and talk about it and then dance (improvisational prancing around) to it. They *LOVE* it. We're almost done and I thought we'd move to "The story of the Orchestra" http://www.amazon.com/Story-Orchestra-Listen-Instruments-Composers/dp/1579121489/ref=sr_1_4?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285614324&sr=8-4#_ which looks similar. Suzanne115
I bought my "Discoveries in Music" used so I am not sure. It is also listed on Veritas's website so you might check there or call Calvert. Suzanne
