Guest Alte Veste Academy
Love, love, love the Signature series from the 50s. My dc eat these up. We have loved every one we have read and I like them so well I pre-read them all, even though I know they are bound to be winners! They are chapter books and I read aloud. You can also find some Landmarks that are great for the younger kids. Neuberger's The Lewis and Clark Expedition is not to be missed. Katherine Shippen wrote great stuff from the Landmark series. I'm currently pre-reading Andrew Carnegie and the Age of Steel, which is completely fascinating. You touch on immigration, the Erie Canal, the rise of industry, railroads. Fascinating stuff! I just finished her Mr. Bell Invents the Telephone and enjoyed it as well. You can find the old series used for very reasonable prices. My favorite modern biographies are from the Carlrhoda Creative Minds series. ETA: We have only done American history so far. If you want specific recommendations, do share what era you will be covering. :) Edited May 26, 2010 by Alte Veste Academy
Negin
We absolutely love these and have almost the entire series. Couldn't recommend them more. We got them from Rainbow Resource. The ones that are illustrated by Samuel Byrd are much nicer, I think. But they're all good. We also like this series, but they might still be a bit advanced. You can also find several I can Read It or Step into Reading Level books that are biographies.
Shawneinfl
My first grader (and fourth grader) are loving a biography about Helen Keller we are reading this week. I think it's published by Scholastic.
KrissiK
I'm sure this will be of no help to you, but we got a very good biography on Queen Hatshepsut from the library. Kids loved it. We read it when we were in Egypt for SOTW1.

JMDRAD
http://www.ywampublishing.com/c-71-heroes-for-young-readers.aspx These are hero books for young readers. They are mostly missionary stories but I think they have some historical figures in there too.

Yes, they have a wide selection now of missionaries and historical figures, along with unit study guides and map books if you want those.
