Love, love, love the Signature series from the 50s. My dc eat these up. We have loved every one we have read and I like them so well I pre-read them all, even though I know they are bound to be winners! They are chapter books and I read aloud. You can also find some Landmarks that are great for the younger kids. Neuberger's The Lewis and Clark Expedition is not to be missed. Katherine Shippen wrote great stuff from the Landmark series. I'm currently pre-reading Andrew Carnegie and the Age of Steel, which is completely fascinating. You touch on immigration, the Erie Canal, the rise of industry, railroads. Fascinating stuff! I just finished her Mr. Bell Invents the Telephone and enjoyed it as well. You can find the old series used for very reasonable prices. My favorite modern biographies are from the Carlrhoda Creative Minds series.

ETA: We have only done American history so far. If you want specific recommendations, do share what era you will be covering. :)

A Weed is a Flower, Hero Tales, the Picture Book Series, Stories of Great Composers, and Childhood of Famous Americans. You can also find several I can Read It or Step into Reading Level books that are biographies.

We really like the David Adler Picture Book biographies. There are about 25 or so. Here is a link to one of them.

:iagree:

And we LOVE the D'Aulaire books. Beautiful Feet publishes them now, and they are truly worth having.
