mama4AU
I am still trying to decide if I should use sequential spelling, spelling workout, or something else or if I can get the quality of learning and teaching from a free online spelling program. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
littlebug42
You could use Webster's Speller http://www.merrycoz.org/books/spelling/SPELLING.HTM in conjunction with Spellingcity.com. You would need to input your lists to spelling city but other than the time component it is free.
Matryoshka
My kids have really been enjoying the BigIQ Kids free spelling program. I like the lists they have pre-programmed - there are usually a number of words with a similar pattern (though never all of them). If they don't get it right the first time, you can re-test, and it shuffles the words. There's also a study option, and all the words are read in sentences. You can also add words to the list or make your own from scratch. The lists go up through 7th grade, I think. My younger dd is doing both this and Sequential Spelling; for one of my older dds this is now the only spelling program she's using.
Guest rubilynne4
try donpotter.net lot's of great phonics and spelling resources. he recommends the american spelling book by noah webster. he has three free downloadable versions. i am going to use the non picture version with a copy of The ABC's and all their tricks ($10.00 from amazon). you don't need the second book, but it may be helpful for rules of spelling. NoPlaceLikeHome
You could use Webster's Speller http://www.merrycoz.org/books/spelling/SPELLING.HTM in conjunction with Spellingcity.com. You would need to input your lists to spelling city but other than the time component it is free. Don Potter has several versions of Webster's Speller in PDF format with large print even. The 1824 and 1908 versions are great. He even has a public school version of Webster's Speller:D
MamaT
This one says it is for high schoolers, but I have used it successfully with my upper grammar students. http://www.splashesfromtheriver.com/spelling/spelling-lesson-1-5.htm

Sara R
Here is the pdf of her workshop handout. The word list is on pages 3-4. Here is the main page to the workshop and the link to the books for sale. I use this word list in a free home overteaching spelling program, described in detail at the link. This is an excellent program for students who need a lot of practice in spelling, and for parents who can dedicate the time to the upkeep of the list (10 or so minutes per day consistently).
