s/o Read alouds you love

Recommended Posts

Here are some of ours:

The Wizard of Oz I've read this 3 times aloud over the years and the kids love it. We have the edition beautifully illustrated by Michael Hague (it's unabridged).

The Not-Just Anybody Family Funny and touching, with great characters

Homer Price DS *loved* this story. Each chapter is almost like reading a complete story, because each one comes to a conclusion at the end

The Little House series! I still have my boxed set from childhood and I read the whole thing to DD starting around her 4th birthday. She spent a lot of time after that playing with the tube from a roll of wrapping paper, pretending it was her gun (she was Pa) and "shooting" things by poking them with it.

Absolute fave is The Tale of Despereaux. I truly enjoyed reading that aloud.

We are listening to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have never read it aloud myself, but I would like to now that I've listened to it!

ETA: Winnie the Pooh for sure!! It took me many years to even try that one!

I used to teach jr. high English in a Christian school and I read aloud every day to the kids. Here are some of their favorites:

Maniac Magee

True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

For my own kids (ages 7,6 & 4) they enjoy:

Peter Rabbit and other Beatrix Potter stories

Winnie the Pooh

THe Froggie books (which I hate)

The Duck in a Truck books (which I hate)
