mo2
I used Mavis Beacon to learn to type long ago. I hope it's still around, because I'd like for my kids to use it. I type about 100 wpm and earn a living by typing, so I'd say it worked!
2cents
My 10 yr old is taking keyboarding via FLVS (Florida Virtual School) for free because we live in Florida. The program she is using is Thompson Learning-MicroType Pro. It is a really great program.

Mary in NJ
We use Typing Instructor Deluxe here. The interactive program has the children looking at the screen and showing them where to place their fingers for each stroke. Then on to the games where they just "have" to pay attention to what is on the screen and do not have time to look at the keyboard. In order to win the game, they need to type the particular letters that appear on the screen. Speed is important in order to win the game. If they keep looking down at the keyboard, they loose time and probably the game. There are plenty of practice lessons on each level. They think of typing as a "free time" activity since it involves the computer and games. One of their favorite parts of the day. I am very pleased with the program. The price was right. Around $10 from Timberdoodle. Joyfully, Mary
