Halcyon
So we're working on Math, my 7 yo DS and I...and he's doing fine. Can solve for x when X+12=24. Can solve for x when 63=x+9. Can solve for x when 27-x=13. But then we hit a roadbloack, and he can't quite wrap his head around x-15=54. We use blocks, pictures, candy... So then I say, "Let's say I'm standing here, minding my own business. I don' know what I'm worth, but let's call it X. And then let's say some bad guy comes along and chops off my head, which is worth 15. Bye bye head!!!!" <imagine me, flailing my arms, waving frantically goodbye to my head, which for some reason, is actually floating away>. Then I sigh "Now I only have my torso left, which is worth just 54." <I moan a bit here, sad little headless me.> Then I ask my son "Now tell me, if i managed to get my head back on my torso, how much would my whole body be worth?" My son answers "well, your head was worth 15, so if we stuck it back on your torso, which is worth 54, then your whole body would be....69!!!!!" Desperate times call for desperate measures....:lol:

abbeyej
Roflol! All of my dd's math comes down to plates of cookies and how many her brother steals or she eats or steals from him... X questions leave us with closed boxes of cookies (or brownies) equalling some number on another table and... ;) Yep, you do what you've gotta do! Maybe we'll try decapitating imaginary people for a change of pace one of these days. :)

I did it with "I have a bag of gold and I won't tell you how much is in it but we'll call it X..." :D

Sunshine State Sue
Pat yourself on the back. There is no teacher in public or private school that could use that method and maintain control of the classroom. Your son is blessed. :cheers2:
