....
Has anyone taught map reading to a 1st grader? If so, did you use a book (like an Usborne geography book, for example) or did you come up with your own material? I'm stumped on this one. It's one of the public school standards for 1st grade and I didn't want to miss anything.
krisperry
Maps, Charts, & Graphs might be what you are looking for. Level A is considered first grade. They aren't overly difficult though, so you might do Level A & B this year: http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/Places+Around+Me:+Level+A/008888/1253582885-1521752
Mom_Abear
We use Evan-More Daily Geography Practice here. There is a different workbook for each grade level. It's easy, fast, and gets the job done painlessly. ;)

KrissiK
We're using BJU Heritage Studies 1 and it's part of the curriculum. That's part of the reason I'm using this curriculum. The boys already know how to use a compass rose and are pretty good at identifying the major continents.

Chris in VA
We incorporated it into SOTW thru the Activity Guide. I always thought it was a little funny that dd knew more about the geography of the Roman Empire than of the USA, but that will change this year! sagira
I'm teaching maps right now to my first grader using the following resources: - Tanglewood Education.com Geography lessons (free with the purchase of the corebook -- only $5.50 I think) - Story of the World 1 - Kingfisher Children's Atlas
