skimerinkydo
We're using IEW for writing but I'm wrestling with what to use for grammar. What's out there that fits my criteria: Middle school 5-7 grade level Doesn't assume that the student already knows grammar - uses diagraming Secular - because we go through a public charter school Available at Rainbow Resource... or another "approved vendor" at our school... so in other words if it is only available to buy from the publisher I probably can't get it. The best thing I've found so far is Zaner Bloser's G.U.M. and I'm trying to find some more options to pick from.
AngieW in Texas
Saxon Grammar and Writing ought to fit the bill perfectly. http://www.rainbowresource.com/prodlist.php?sid=1250349987-383715&subject=7&category=6746 Be warned that most people I know who have used the program take more than one year to work through one level and then often skip a level. A typical sequence is to do book 5 for 5th and 6th grades and then book 7 for 7th and 8th grades. Those books are hefty. I did the 8th grade level for my oldest and spread it out over 1.5 years. This program starts from the beginning (even the 8th grade level book) and covers absolutely everything in explicit detail.
HollyDay
GWG, but it only goes up through 7th at the moment.
mrsrevmeg
We like Shurley English. It goes over the parts of speech each year so if they do not know their it will be covered no matter where you start. There are some writing assignments where they have an option to do something religious or something secular. If you are not doing the writing portion (which is what we are doing) it is a non-issue. Sunshine State Sue
I love Analytical Grammar. It's intended for 6th-7th-8th. You may read my review in this thread. They also have Junior AG. It's intended for 4th or 5th.
cslbda
Last year my son used Glencoe Grammar and Language Workbook- Grade 7. It is has 340+ pages and covers diagramming. The only downside is there doesn't seem to be an answer book available - or at least not one that I've seen. HTH
HSMom2One
Here's another vote for Shurley Grammar. We used it for two years and it was very thorough. Dd needs a change with several areas of curriculum this year though, so we are going to go to Easy Grammar. I'm convinced that both programs are excellent. ekarl2
Don't rule out programs only available from the publisher. It's not hard to get on the approved vendor list as long as a company is willing to accept purchase orders (which many are more than willing to do). nukeswife
We used GWG for a couple years and it was ok, my son loved it at first and then it got to be a not so well liked thing with him. This year we're using Junior Analytical Grammar and he really likes it. I've found it very easy to use.

EKS
We liked Hake Grammar and Writing. But it's only available from the publisher I'm pretty sure. ETA: I stand corrected. It's now called Saxon Grammar and Writing and Rainbow carries it. Thanks AngieW! Edited August 16, 2009 by EKS
