momtolgd
I'm looking for some type of computer programming course for my oldest...I wanted to buy The Great Logo Adventure, but can't find it anywhere and it is out of print. It is available online and I may still do that...but in my search I came across Scratch. There doesn't seem to be any good lesson plans available for it, though. I was wondering if anyone here has used it and how they did it. DS will turn 9 in August, and is quite good with computer skills (DH is a computer technician.) Thanks. :001_smile: Here is the link to it... http://scratch.mit.edu/ Edited June 16, 2009 by momtolgd
Orthodox6
DD (10 yrs) has used Scratch since she was 8-yo. Don't need lesson plans -- just turn your child loose with it ! http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Support Here's another free program to look at: http://www.toontalk.com/ We haven't tested this one yet: http://www.alice.org/ There are several websites for the different LOGO versions. If you want my links, I'll be glad to post them.
momtolgd
Thank you! And I would love to see the links you have for Logo. I remember doing Logo in middle school, and would love to teach the kids...just having trouble finding resources for free or little cost. mamapjama
Yes and we love it! My 6 year old (now 7) and I worked to make a game/presentation about our province. He quickly picked up on the basics. I had to figure out the harder bits, but we had a ton of fun. I know he will enjoy it again when he can use it on his own.
Stacia
Yep -- my ds has used & enjoyed it. Learn Scratch may help. Ds originally took a 6-week computer class at the rec center that went over Scratch & they worked on some projects. The class he took was through Computer Explorers (they have locations in many states & a few different countries).

It looks great just briefly looking at it...I'm going to bookmark it to look at it further. There is only 1 computer explorers location in my entire state, and it isn't near us.

Hmm, I didn't think about using it with a younger child...wonder if my dd would be interested in it as well? She will turn 7 in October. Orthodox6
Here goes with what I have squirreled away: http://fmslogo.sourceforge.net/ http://www.softronix.com/logo.html (To my bewilderment, Kaspersky "blocked" that webpage for "porn". I unblocked the site, and detect (as before when I bookmarked it) NOTHING bad !) http://sourceforge.net/projects/fmslogo This page notes that FMS Logo formerly was called MSW Logo. http://www.fmslogo.org/ http://et.bgcbellevue.org/logo/ AHA ! Lessons ! ! Thank you! And I would love to see the links you have for Logo. Vida Winter
My kids have played around with Scratch but we never did anything formal. Another program they have had fun with (although not programming) is Crayon Physics. Link: http://www.crayonphysics.com/
Catwoman
:lurk5: This is a great thread, and I'm getting lots of wonderful ideas for ds9! Thanks! :001_smile: Cat
NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
The computer science professor and assistants taught classes in the basics and then there was lunch, computer lab time and a presentation of projects at the end. It was a lot of fun and FREE. http://day.scratch.mit.edu/ I hope they will have it again next year. k
Alessandra
What a great thread! RR has Logo Adventures -- I don't know if this is what you are looking for. My ds used Scratch with no problem at age 8, but is not that interested in animation. Can someone explain how Logo and Scratch are different -- I keep seeing some versions of Logo linked with math, which my ds loves. Are Logo & Scratch two versions of the same type of program (like two word processing programs) or are they quite different (like a spreadsheet & a database program)? momtolgd
What a great thread! RR has Logo Adventures -- I don't know if this is what you are looking for. I seen that, but the software that goes along with it is too pricey for us right now. Does anyone know if that book can be used with a free Logo download like FMS Logo?
