Any suggestions for a fun & educational kids magazine? (1st/2nd grader)

Recommended Posts

My 6-yr-old son picked up a copy of Highlights at our doctor's office last week & expressed interest in getting a subscription. I don't have a problem with getting it, but I was wondering whether there were any others I ought to consider.

He already gets the Lego "mini-mag". He is very bright & loves math & science & reads pretty well on his own. He likes crosswords & word searches as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other kids magazines to consider?

Thanks!

You might check your library for the magazines from Cricket. At his age, Click or Ask for science and Spider for reading. Our library carries most of their magazines. They're good quality, but I'd check them out before subscribing. (I got Click for my son when he was five and he never read it :glare:. Now at 6, he's enjoying Ask and Spider.)

...Lori D., I'm impressed with your one-stop-shopping list of resources!

And, everyone else, thank you for the suggestions. From first glance, I think Ask & Spider might do the trick, but I am going to take the suggestion of going to the library to check them out first.

Thanks again for the suggestions posted thus far!

Great list Lori D.!

I am considering getting Kids Discover Magazine as a gift for a 6 year old.

Can anyone recommend this? Is it interesting to your children?

We sometimes borrow them from the library to go along with history or science topics. It's a bit much for a 6yo, IMO, especially if they're still intimidated by small print. Mine does like it, but it's kind of like reading an encyclopedia article with lots more pictures. Something like Your Big Backyard might be better - more stories, less words per page, more activities (mazes/recipes/etc).
