  1. Prima Latina was ours. I really wanted to like it. I even bought it twice, thinking because she was a little bit older we could use it, but neither one of us liked it at all. I think it was just too dry.
  2. :iagree: I live in Houston too!!! What part do you live in? I live in the Cy-fair area.
  3. YES!!!! I went for the first time ever in October of '08. I was 36 and I had the time of my life!!! I enjoyed all the parks. We even stayed through Halloween! It was the most magical time of my life! I loved it! Go, go, go!!!:D
  4. I love Texas. Housing is affordable, there's more freedom in homeschooling, and the people in general are very nice.:D
  5. Your kids are so cute. My dd is also very talkative and sometimes it just does not gel with others who come from the "children should be seen and not heard" era. I know my brother is that way. Don't let it affect you. She could have been joking. Take it with a grain of salt and remain blessed in the fact your family is close because of what you're doing as a mommy. Blessings and hugs!!!:grouphug:
  6. I feel for you. I'm going through the same thing with my 10-yr.-old dd. I feel like choking her sometimes. LOL! My husband suggested this to me and I'm going to try to implement it. How about if you take everything away? Then at the end of a good week of schooling, he gets one thing back. For every good week of school, he gets another thing back. I'm also using Easter eggs with rewards inside go them. For instance, if dd gives me a good day at school, she collects a ticket. At the end of the week if she collects 5 tickets, she gets an easter egg with a prize inside. For example, an ice cream, or nail polish, $5 towards a new toy or DVD. That kind of thing. I hope everything works out.:grouphug:
  7. AHG is a Christian based group. However, we wouldn't turn down anyone not a Christian. Like the Boy Scouts, we will accept non-Christians, however we will not change our creed and beliefs to suit a non-believer.
  8. I really don't know too much about GS other than the cookies, so I can't help you there, however, my daughter is in a scouting troop called American Heritage Girls. They start @ 5yrs. and go all the way to High School. Unlike the GS, we ARE affliated with the Boy Scouts. I love that the troop is very Christ Centered. Many badges are related to God, Country, and Community. Our creed is: "As an American Heritage Girl, I promise to love God, cherish my family, Honor my Country, and serve in my Community." Please check out the website... www.ahgonline.org Hope this helps. My dd has been in it for a whole year and LOVES it.
  9. I asked SWB about History,at a recent lecture, for 5th on up and she replied SOTW was for 1st-4th grade. So I hope that helps in that respect, however MOH can be used from the beginning to all the way to High school. Both are so good.
  10. I love MUS! I left it for Horizons for 2 weeks, and went back to MUS. I left it again for Schiller Math, and then went back again to MUS. The reason I left it so many times was because I was new to homeschooling. But I love the way my dd has mastered addition, subtraction, and now multiplication. I do supplement with Saxon 3, just to make sure she knows how to use the methods and for review. And she does! Also, I recently had the opportunity to hear SWB speak at a conference and I was very happy to hear she recommended both those math curriculums and the exact way I was already doing it. Yea! Hope this helps!!!
  11. What I did was with my dd 2nd grader was I went to www.ala.org. There they have the list of ALL the Newberry and Caldecott award winning books. Caldecott's are picture books and Newberry's are chapter books. We live in Texas, so we have the Texas Bluebonnet Award books and every year there is a master list the public school teachers go by...so, I also printed out those lists. You may want to preview them because many are secular, but they also teach great moral character. I hope this helps. Kristy
  12. I started out with TWTM, but found out my dd is just not into learning that way. I am, but she loves art and crafts. I still use it as a guide, but have adapted it to use it more as unit studies. For instance, we study math and grammar in the mornings. Then we do our unit study in the afternoon. I use the vocabulary, dictation, and research and a literature for the unit. I get a lot of great units from www.handsofachild.com I may go back to the disciplined way of TWTM in junior high and high school,(b/c I really love the way it speaks to my heart) but for my second grader, I can't stress about it. I feel I need to inspire a love for learning first before the disciplined study begins. Hope this answered some questions.
  13. I've changed curriculum also. How do you do KONOS with one child? I really like it because my dd is hyperactive.
  14. Hi, I am a new Homeschooling mom, but I've had the same problem with choosing a math. Did Horizons-she didn't like it. Moved to fast and she didn't master any of the concepts. Did Math-u-See--too slow. Alpha deals with single digit addition only! Beta deals with single digit subtraction only! Now, while I know she would "master" the concepts...she started hating math. We went to the THSC Convention today and my family fell in love with Shiller Math. You can find it on www.shillermath.com . The cost is $300..but you get a LOT! They also offer payment plans!!! Hope this helps.
  15. Ibbygirl, Thanks for posting your testimony. When I was 15 I was a very devout Catholic, prayed the Rosary 3 times a day, did morning prayers, evening, and night prayers. I wanted to become a nun. During that whole time, I began to feel something heavy on my chest at night. I would feel like something was trying to prevent me from breathing. On other nights my bed would shake, or I would have nightmares about the devil trying to get me. It was so bad I slept with my parents in their room beside their bed for 3 years. Unfortunately, after that time I had a serious boyfriend who drew me away from Christ... I have since been baptized again but I still struggle daily with my relationship to Him...but that's for another post... I have no idea what happened during that time in my life but I don't doubt anyone who has shared their own experiences. I couldn't.I can't. And I consider myself to be a very logical person. Nevertheless, there is a quote I once heard and I think it goes well for this thread: "For those who believe, no explanation is needed; For those who do not believe, no explanation is possible."
  16. I'm with the Moms. I would taker her to the ER too just to make sure everyhting is okay. I hope everything is okay. Let us know. I'll be praying for you.
  17. We call our school "The Cypress Academy of Advanced Learning" school colors--Oxford blue and silver motto: "Armed in knowledge" School shield is a dragon with a crown underneath him. We wanted it to look snazzy on the transcripts to Harvard, dahlings....
  18. In WTM, SWB suggests the great men and women to cover during History and Geography. My question is...what books did ya'll use to cover them? I didn't really see any book suggestions for the bios. Thanks in advance for the help.:001_smile:
