  1. So, I just got a gas oven/stove off Craigslist. I am so happy, we went for 8 months cooking on a two burner cook top and a toaster oven. My question is, when the oven is on and preheating, I smell propane. Is that normal or does it need to be adjusted? My husband said he thinks it is normal but we can smell it quite storngly. It is less strong after the preheat but you can still smell it. I just don't really want to explode so I'm askin. Thanks ****I should clarify, it doesn't smell when the stovetop burners are lit, just the oven smells****
  2. Oh my, yes!!! That really helps me. There are many times when I have felt this way. I have had to shake off that loser feeling! My husband and I have decided that there are "the cool guys" for EVERYTHING. Golf, chess, sewing, racing cars, techie gurus, cooks, message boards, you name it; this is life. I am not a cool guy here. It's ok. I sometimes feel like I know you people. I am not sure that is healthy. Sometimes I also feel like being on this board is a waste of time in general. I have a list of 10 reasons why it is a waste of my time including: the time I realize I spend on here each day, curriculum hopping it can lead to, comparing my kids to others, comparing myself to others and really the list goes on. I have come to the conclusion that I am actually addicted to this darn website. Sigh.......
  3. First of all thank you for bringing up this topic. I plan to get both Yesterday's Classics And Heritage History collections when I get some stuff sold. I can see what this poster is saying but, since these books would cost thousands of dollars to get in my actual hands my kids can use an e reader. Better to have then in digital format than not at all.
  4. It was better than we thought it would be. I would preview it as only you know what your kid's can handle. My.02 :)
  5. I never thought I would have boys and girls sharing a room but for the last 7 months we have been remodeling and my 4 dc have all been sharing a room. I have 2 boys and 2 girls. They are all handling it like champs! They all dress in the bathroom and are excellent at respecting eachother's need for privacy/modesty. In the next few weeks there will be a boy room and a girl room. These kinds of times make us all appreciate the little things that is for sure! (the kids are in the master bedroom and dh and I are in the room that will soon be the schoolroom--can't wait!)
  6. That is one of those REALLY cool stories. Thank you for sharing!:001_smile:
  7. I have a son who does not have natural social skills. He is a sweet kid but doesn't get how to respond to an adult when they talk to him and things like that. We role-play a bit and I really refuse to just say it is his personality. I know a family who did that with thier son and he is very selfish and awful to be around. As far as screen goes: recently, I realized that my son would not do anything productive except wait to play on the computer. (just Jump Start). He would kind of sit around saying he was bored and playing with his toes until I would relent and let him play something. First, I drew a picture of a really squiggly line going around and around and told him that it represented his brain. Then I drew one that kind of just went up and down a little but short and not real interesting like the other one. That is his brain when all he does or wants to do is games. I told him that he needs to get a life! Until I see him PLAYING again, and not waiting for screen time, there will be None. We did that for over a month. This is his life, who he is, I am not going to let the computer suck that out of him! Now. I don't give him "screen time" every day. If I do, he will reay sit around waiting for his half hour wasting his life. (pathetic really!). I only every once in a while spring some screen time on him when he is not expecting it and when I see him interacting with the world in an energetic, positive and interesting way. It has gotten a lot better. I don't know what it is with boys and screens but it is ridiculous! Let's not just relent and let them become gaming zombies!!
  8. Agreed! I remember hearing that your writing should be like a window that you cen see through without a problem. If you "notice" a writing "style" it is irritating and you aren't just enjoying the words like a window you can just look through, but you stop and stumble over the words. I hope that makes sense!
  9. Ok, the weird thing is, I have had this number for the last 8 years. I know it is some sort of scam, I just wonder what!!! The way they are breezy and friendly sounding, like a friend. I just wonder what they could be after.
  10. In the last week, I have gotten 2 texts from 2 different people that basically say they are just checking to make sure they "know who this is, can I give my name to confirm" texts. OK, the first one said, "SO sorry, This is a new phone and I don't have this number saved, who is this?" and the next one came this morning and said, "Sorry, who is this?" They are from different numbers in my state. I know I don't know either of these people and I did not give my info to them. What is that all about? Why would people do this? It is weird and creepy.
  11. http://www.allinonehomeschool.wordpress.com (I am pretty sure that is the site)--they have a great learning to read program. My daughter who is 4 is loving it.
  12. So, I did the first and second day of the preschool level and my daughter really really enjoyed it. She is begging for more! She loves the songs most.:) Not all of it is directly on the computer--some things are printed out and there are crafts too. I have to say it really is easy!:tongue_smilie:
  13. Seriously people!!! Take a look!!! You won't be sorry!!! ;)
  14. http://allinonehomeschool.wordpress.com/ Not all the levels are done, she is doing the levels as her kids enter them but most seem to be done (in some cases they are written but not tested). This is free and covers everything. I am really impressed!!! I wanted to add that one thing that is really impressive about this curriculum is usually when you see a "free" curriculum, you then look at the book list that you need and that part is NOT free. From what I can tell all the books are linked and online and are for real FREE.
  15. I just wanted to bump you. I have no experience with this kind of kid. We have many other issues, but not this one. Hugs to you. I would pray but I am sure you have. I would also read up on anxiety--as a matter of fact, in a situation like that I would go to amazon and start putting any words in I can think of in the search box that relate to this kind of thing. Often I am surprised at the books out there that relate to my obscure issues.
  16. Good grief!!! This behavior from these ladies is like .... Public school!! (Jr. high even) Seriously. I am sorry you have to be a part of this. With them acting like this, no wonder they aren't a part of leadership. Very catty and immature. You keep your chin up and just keep doing the right thing. When I keep in mind to just do the right thing and know the cream will rise to the top, it helps me cope with hard situations.
  17. Sorry, silly me, of course!!! http://www.justacrossmyfence.com
  18. There is a wonderful unit study on the book and on Colorado. It is called Just Across My Fence and it is really a cool study. In the first week we learn to name a legal description, make a custard pie, and study and design boots and saddles. There is also tons of recipes, vocabulary, character, history, and all the regular unit study stuff. I am truly amazed at the amount of cool information and activities in this book. I am seriously not doing it justice. BTW, I don't know the author and have no monetary interest in the study. I was just really impressed with it and thought if people love the series, they will love this companion guide.:)
  19. I don't currently live there but I have lived all over the metro area over 25 years. Parker is a great area with tons of homeschoolers, it is right near CHEC which is where the main homeschool (Christian) group. Is is the state organization and I know of a really great (sniff....I miss it) family integrated church is near there. PM me if you arecinterestedcin any of this info. I am in Missouri but I still love Colorado. Great people there.
  20. I have an adopted son who was exposed to alcohol and drugs. I am in the process of attempting to have him tested so I can get a baseline to start therapies and get him help. I say attempt because I live in the Springfield, Missouri area and they are very behind on cognitive processing remediation. I am not sure how to get help for him. The neurologist I talked to basically said, "Well, Good luck with this." We are going to get an MRI, that they can do. Then I am supposed to get with the school to get him an IEP. I am a bit leery to do that just because I don't want him labled but at least it is a start. I guess I really can't have both anonymity for him and help for him too. From what I understand, there is not alot of help for dyslexia, sensory processing, auditory processing and all that that I suspect he needs help with. I went to the appointment hoping to have him tested for all this only to be told that I will have to find testing for all this and that there is not a lot of help for testing or remediation. SO, I feel really overwhelmed and depressed with all this. Just FYI, I moved here from the Denver area so that is why I am familiar with all the possible problems he is facing. Also, the neurologist I talked to is from Stanford so he is savvy to it all as well and just shook his head at me about how woefully behind things are here. sigh..............I may have made a mistake moving here. We were actually not intending to move here. We were heading somewhere else and visited some friends here and wound up staying. We do like it here and part of the reason is that it is slower paced and not so hustle bustle but when it comes to this kind of thing, we need more hustle bustle. Does anyone have good online resources. I know there are many of them but I want to know the best ones you have all heard of. I know this is really rambly and may not be very understandable. I am really trying to understand whet I need to do myself so any advice would be appreciated. Also, any helpful oils or omegas anyone knows of would be helpful. There is a lady here who is just starting in on the Dianne Craft stuff and talks about fermented stuff. I imagine peope will catch on to this kind of thing but for now it is rare. Another problem is we are really super tight financially. He has medicaid because he was adopted through foster care so that helps but it is hit and miss. I think I will stop rambling or you all are going to think I am the one who needs remediation! TIA Stacey
  21. If it were me I would give it more time and look at the other places too. I bet it will become clearer as you go. I must admit, I REALLY want to know what locations you are talking about!
