  1. I could have written your post word for word right down to the 11yo dd. exact same problems. I hired a tutor for my daughter. She is just getting started so I don't see much improvement yet, but my dd really likes her and enjoys her math time with her. We had been using TT 7 up until last week. Her tutor suggested we try A Beka. We started this week with her doing all of the problems on her own. Her tutor went through everything to make sure she understood and then circled problems for her to complete each day. These are problems she knows how to do, she just makes careless errors. She too has this spacey attitude during math. The plan this week is to let her work these problems on her own and let her tutor grade them tomorrow. I wanted her to see exactly what I am dealing with as my dd seems to do well with her. I sat down today to take a peak and she has at least half of them wrong. Like you, I was crushed! I thought part of the problem was just her sloppy handwriting causing mistakes. For the most part, she wrote nicely in her notebook because she knows her tutor will be looking at it. So, maybe that's not our issue after all. Like your dd, she's very good in LA, writing, art, ect. Math is really her only problem subject. She is very creative. I wish their was an artsy math program....that would probably work. I hope tomorrow her tutor will have some suggestions for me once she sees her work. She'll have a much better idea as to where her problems are coming from. At least I hope so. For what it's worth, her daughter was just like my daughter at a young age. She is now studying at MIT for her mathematics degree. She has told me not to worry. Just keep working with her. It's hard not to worry.
  2. Does TC offer plenty of review or is it a mastery program?
  3. Yes, that's what I'm thinking just looking at samples. My dd is using TT at the moment. She does not like it at all, but she absolutely needs the built in review. Oh well.....
  4. I was looking at samples from the 14 week free lesson plan. It doesn't look like they review at all. Is this a mastery program?
  5. Has anyone taken this class? I am thinking of signing my dd up for ths class in the fall for 7th grade. I would love to hear feedback on this class or any of her other classes for that matter. Thanks, Sandy
  6. My dd11 was doing an online US History class for history this year. She absolutely hated it! She complained every single day. I finally just gave up and handed her the "Compete Book of US History" and told her to read it. I also take a peek and give her other books to read on the topic the book is covering, as well as use lots of history dvd's. The other day she thanked me and told me how much more interesting history was now! She was literally not retaining anything from the boring class she was attending. She hated history. There really is no need in that with all of the great books out there. ETA....I am also waiting on some of the Drama of American History books I bought used on Amazon.
  7. I could have written this post word for word! I am having the same problems with my dd11 6th. We are using TT as well, and she makes careless mistakes over and over and over.......For one thing, she writes so fast and her work is so sloppy, she gets confused. It's such a battle just getting her to slow down. She recently started with a tutor, and just loves her time with her. Her tutor doesn't see what I see at home though. Last week I had her take her lesson to her session and do the work with her tutor. Her tutor stated she thought it might just be the format of TT. She thinks the anticiation of hearing him tell her the answer was right or wrong was making her tense. She stated even she (tutor) tarted getting all tensed up waiting to see what he was going to say. lol She requested she just use the workbook this week to see how things go. So far, today's lesson was typical. She still blames TT for her wrong answers. Her other suggestion if that didnt seem to help was to switch her to Abeka math. The tutor chose Abeka because she has used it for years with kids through 6 grade. She is planning to go through it and cut out all the work she doesn't need so she can focus on the stuff she does need to work on. So basically, we won't be starting back again at the beginning. I did go ahead and order it. It's worth a shot. I am inclined to say that it won't help, but I'll try anything at ths point. I'll be listening in to see what suggestions you get!
  8. What about Write at Home? I see they offer an 8 week class for middle schoolers but it just started. Maybe you could still work with it. They also have 2 week crash courses for SAT essay prep starting in April I think. Sandy
  9. Yes! This would me me as well. I know I should be able to figure a useful way to get them done, but I just can't seem to think of a logical system.
  10. I would love to hear exactly how you utilize these. Do you just pick random cards out of the box? How do you review with so many cards to work through? Sandy
  11. I'll have to check. I think for now, I'm going to pass on it. I'm sure this deal will come around again, and they're likely to change them or come out with a new edition before I need them.
  12. No, we have that one too. We just started it though so not sure if we love it yet. The one I am referring to is done by 3 different professors. I have read good things about it here. I just wasn't sure if it would be way to old for my dd11. She prefers history on DVD. She is very visual. It's called A History of the United States, 2nd addition.
  13. Would this be appropriate for a 6th grader? It's on sale right now and I am really tempted! Those that have it, is it straight up lectures, or more visual? By that I mean, does it include a good amount of visual presentations or do the professors just talk?
  14. Haha, I forgot about that. My ds does a Thursday co-op. I am forever being harassed about that as well.
  15. I know what you mean! My 8yo asks every single day if tomorrow is a school day. About an hour ago, he asked me if the day after tomorrow was a school day. I said indeed it was, and he ran off crying up the stairs!!! Apparently, dh made him think he didn't have school this Friday and he was really looking forward to it. Not sure how he gathered that information. Neither of my kids like school. I just deal with it. I am trying different things to change that though.....it's likely they will never appreciate what I do for them. Oh well, hang in there!
  16. They are having a sale. Please list your favorites for middle school/high school. I am especially interested in courses that can be used in middle school. We are studying US history this year. I ordered the Professor Linwood DVD series a few days ago. I am hoping my non history loving 6th grader will get something out of them. Just curious what else y'all recommend for now and the future. Thanks!
  17. My daughter is going on her 4th session with Home2Teach. She really likes it. She has done Descriptive Writing and Beginning Creative Writing twice. I just love the writing she has done. She has learned a lot. She is starting Narrative Writing next month. She also wants to be a writer.
  18. It takes my kids about 30 or so. We are using 3 and 7.
  19. I am interested in the Dear America and My America series. Which is better?
  20. I want to hear about the stuff your kids love! I posted last week about my daughter (11, 6th) was really disliking her online history class with Landry. I finally told her this morning she didn't have to do it anymore. She is so relieved. Please pass along anything that you have used that you love for a non history loving child. She doesn't like craft type stuff or dry, boring books. She is very visual but does well with audio too. I have ordered the Drive Thru American History series DVD's. I also own the History of Us DVD. I am also ordering some of the history related Kids Discover Magazines later today. I am thinking for now of using mostly movies, documentaries, kid friendly books, ect. I was also thinking of listening to Hakim's history books from Audible. I have a ton of credits i need to use, between me and my husband, i could get the whole set. Anything that you can think of that your kids have loved, please post here. Thanks, Sandy
  21. My daughter is using Home2Teach. She just finished her 3rd session today. She loves it! It is hands off for the parent. Some disagree with this but I am totally ok with it for now. lol They want to see the student's work, not the students work after the parent has made them fix their errors. She has learned a lot! And I think it's pretty cheap at $80 for 6 week sessions. Registration is going on right now. Classes start again in March, but they do fill quickly.
