  1. Thanks everyone! I think I will have him continue what he's doing. Onestep, the flash cards we use aren't the typical flash cards. They have the number characters on the front as a reminder of the story that goes along with the fact. They are easy for him but it's interesting to me that he doesn't use that knowledge during math. He reverts back to counting dots or using his fingers. He doesn't even try to think 3 plus 3 =6 as 3 bee plus 3 bee equals sick 6. It's strange how that just goes out of his mind. Sandy
  2. I do own Phonics Pathways! I'll dig it out and look through it. Thanks for the AAR suggestion. I had forgotten about that one. Sandy
  3. He reads all the time. He just picks up random words like crazy. He knows all letters and sounds. What would be a good fun program to go ahead and start teaching him to read? Thanks Sandy
  4. I should add he will be 10 this month and in 4th grade. We are using TT4 and will move into TT5 partway into the school year. He gets the math concepts, it's just the fact memorization.
  5. My ds finally has some of his addition facts memorized. He learned most of them through Addition the Fun Way. He can tell you the stories and such when working on the cards. However, this doesn't translate to math. It's the strangest thing. He reverts back to counting dots in his head or using fingers when he's actually doing his math. With multiplication, same thing only he uses a multiplication chart on the wall. Should I keep plugging away with the flash cards in hopes that some day they will stick or just give up and let him use charts, ect? Thanks, Sandy
  6. I think you did the right thing! I thought about CC for my son but I just knew if wouldn't work for him. Memorization can be so difficult for a dyslexic child. We are using Barton and my ds is doing amazing with it. I'm doing all the tutoring myself. For me, my big focus is reading and spelling at the moment. I'm still doing all of the other stuff but those are my priorities with him. Math too! My ds is turning 10 this month and we are in level 4. Sandy
  7. I'm not entirely sure but can you even buy the student pages from k12? I didn't know that was even an option.
  8. That's what I did. Don't forget though, if you like it you'll need the complete set of 4 volumes;) you can also get the other volumes on amazon. Sandy
  9. There are 4 volumes. The poster above linked you to them. They are put out by K12 and are just a more condensed, readable option. The k12 is full color and less busy if that makes sense. I'm actually having my dd read from both since we just started this series and so far she prefers the concise version. She'll just read from one but I wanted her to pick the one she likes best. Plus I like that we can add in lots if interesting nonfiction to go along with it. I'm excited that she's not fighting me to read it. She has never been a history lover and she likes this. Sandy
  10. That's kind of what I'm thinking. Anyone else have anything to add? Sandy
  11. Is this ok when they are younger? Obviously, at some point he will be reading by himself. We are currently in Barton level 4 but his reading is about grade level (going into 4th). I would love to just hand my ds a book on his level and say "go read for 20 min." The thing is, he makes typical dyslexic mistakes when he reads. I always sit with him and correct him. Should I let him have some free reading time and just let him read, mistakes and all? Or is it crucial that all reading is done together to prevent bad habits? Thanks, Sandy
  12. These are great! I'll add these to my list. Thanks, Sandy
  13. My middle will be in 4th grade this year. He is dyslexic but reading on grade level. I think I'll have him read from SL readers this year with me (I have most all of their readers through 5th grade) but I want to include books that are above his reading level to help enrich his vocabulary and get him interested in reading. What are some good read alouds that your boys enjoyed at this age? I'll either read these books aloud or I'll download the book on Learning Ally so he can listen. Thanks, Sandy
  14. I just asked this the other day:) I'm doing the same thing with my 8th grade dd this year. We are using the concise edition though. So far, she likes it and is not complaining. I'm mainly looking for nonfiction though as my dd is not a huge historical fiction reader. Here is my list so far in no particular order. I searched here and came up with these. I was looking for books that more than just a couple people suggested as I thought I may have better luck with my dd liking the books. World of Columbus and Sons George Washingtons World (foster) Abraham Lincoln's World (foster) Ben Franklin old Philadelphia (cousins) Traitor Benedict Arnold (fritz) Johnny Tremain Carry on Mr.Bowditch Shades of Gray Albert Marrin books The children of battleship row (Pearl Harbor) Steve sheinkin books Russell Freedman books Jim Murphy books Sophie's choice Gueber Sandy
  15. Thank you ladies! Julie, I love the idea of sitting down and actually planning what books I want him to read for school and then he can have his own titles he wants to listen to. I wanted to start in with SOTW this year but just wasn't sure how to fit it all in. Sometimes I just don't feel like I have enough time to get it all in. My plan now is to require HIM to listen to his history on his own using SOTW on the LA app. Thanks, Sandy
  16. Thank you! Anyone else? OHElizabeth, I saw an old thread where you had said you made a list fir your daughter. I would love it if you would share with me:) The KKK book you recommended looks fantastic by that author. Sandy
  17. I paid for the subscription last year and he used it once! I would like to register again this year but need some kind of plan. Do you have dc pick out a book and require a certain amount per day? Do you have them following along or just listening? I would love to hear how this program is used in your home. Thanks, Sandy
  18. My dd will be using the concise edition of Joy Hakim's History of Us from k12 this year. What are your must read books for American history. Must be highly interesting as my dd doesn't care for history. I'm hoping with these books I can change that. She's already started volume A and she said it was good! She prefers it to Notgrass ATB, which she couldn't get through. I did look at BF, SL, and a couple other literature lists but I'm hoping to hear about your favorites! Thanks, Sandy
  19. This was my son back in k. He could not learn letters and sounds. We watched the leapfrog videos, nothing. He would write is numbers 1-10, some numbers backwards, and have to stop in the middle and count from one to see what came next. He'll be 10 this month. I did finally take him to a Barton certified dyslexia screener and she confirmed he has dyslexia. I'm still planning to take him to a neuropsychologist to confirm 100% but I am certain his diagnosis is correct. I am tutoring my son in Barton myself. He is doing so well. We are in level 4, only because we took some time off. All of a sudden, his reading has taken off. He's going into the 4th in the fall and is reading on grade level. He has jumped several grade levels this year. He's just doing so well. He still struggles greatly with spelling. He also struggles with things like remembering math facts. Sandy
  20. OhE, this would be my 7th grader. My 9yo can tag along. My dd has no problem reading big thick books in a couple of days so I don't think it's vision related. She stated to me that she finds history boring. She is tolerating Notgrass so I think I'll still have her do that but try to hit it with more history related dvd's, movies, ect. I have been requiring output in the form of reading the lesson and then answering a few lesson review questions,a workbook, map work, ect. Like I said, she doesn't complain too much about this but she definitely doesn't enjoy it and sometimes can't answer the questions. The reading level is not too hard for her, she's just bored. I do make her scan the book for answers if she doesn't know. She has never liked historical fiction which is why SL was sort of a disaster for her. I guess I just feel the need to help her love history. History in our house is just a "get er done" activity and I wish that wasn't the case.
  21. Would it be reasonable to allow my kids to do nothing but history related movies, documentaries, and Great Courses video lectures for history and call it done? I would really love to just ditch the books; my kids would be so happy!
