This is what I am leaning towards. The robotics class sounds like a ton of fun. I do like EIW so that's a good option. I was also thinking of AAS for him but I remember I stopped using it with my middle son because of the tile setup. Did you use the tiles? I'm thinking I could scrap them and just use a whiteboard. My son does not like anything to do with school, he'd rather be playing! Short and sweet is a must. Actually, now that I think about it, not sure he could sit through a lesson of EIW either. lol

I have my 7 yo registered in a homeschool school that meets one day a week. They use lightening lit 2 for 2nd grade. I registered him in this class along with a robotics, science, pe, and history. My son reads well above 2nd grade. He does not however know how to spell at all but does have very good comprehension. Would this be suitable for a child that reads so far above grade level? I was just going to let him do it for the spelling and grammar but the class was canceled at the time scheduled and I would have to remove him from the robotics class if I want to put him in the earlier class. Any input on this curriculum? Do I really need to worry about grammar at 7? I think I read they do a research paper? That just seems way above him at this point. I was originally planning to just have him read daily with me and do a really good spelling program for language arts. Oh, and handwriting as well. Thoughts? Sandy

Thank you for your replies. I think I will try taking him to the library once a week and see how it goes. He is so resistant to reading, not quite sure how he got to be where he is. I took him to the used bookstore the other day and he chose a few super hero chapter books. mathmarm, I like the idea of just reading, not necessarily from start to finish. He's nearly done with spider man, which I've had to MAKE him read. He's likes the book, just doesn't want to read it. lol

I have a 6yo in 1st grade. We do a little math, explode the code (mostly for spelling), and some handwriting. He has never been taught to read, he just learned on his own somehow. I did a little reading test on him today that went through 6th grade and he passed at the 6th grade level. The kid reads pretty much reads anything. The problem is getting him to actually read is not so fun. He flat out does not want to read at all. He says he hates reading. I want to keep him going forward. Let me say that we are very relaxed around here though. Should I be challenging him some at his reading level? If so, how? Or should just leave it alone and encourage him to read something even though he doesn't like it? Here is the reading test I used with him. EKS, yes he does. I contacted Susan Barton and got a list of dyslexia testers in my area. I don't have them in front of me but the teacher is to read everything orally and he is to have access to a calculator or charts. I do t understand how using a multiplication chart is modifying the test. Can you please clarify. He does not have any other reliable means of multiplying.

I'm a little late administering it:( Anyway, is it ok for me to read the areas to him that he needs help with? I want to order this for my ds to take at home. He is currently a couple months into 4th grade. I dropped the ball and let his end of 3rd grade required testing get away from me. On the order form, it asks for grade. Should I put 3rd or 4th? He's in 4th now put I need to test for 3rd. The office is closed at the moment so I'm asking here in hopes someone knows. Thanks, Sandy

My kids go to a 1 day a week "homeschool" school. My 8th grader is taking English (language arts), Spanish, and guitar. My younger ds is just doing a fun Middle Ages history class and earth science. They have homework to do at home on the other days they are not there. We LOVE it!! Would your kids have the option to take classes other than electives on that 2nd day? Or are you thinking of 2 days a week doing only electives, leaving 3 days a week for academic classes. How old are your kids? I don't think I'd take 2 days a week from academic type classes. Could you fit in LA and math in those days at home later in the afternoon? Sandy

Ohhhh, Fix It Grammar looks good!!!

I don't schedule, even for my 8th grader. We do work boxes. I put one subject in each box and they just work through the boxes. With my dd, she takes some academic classes two days per week outside of the home. For those boxes/subjects, she has her assignments from her teacher. I just guide her along and make sure she gets her work done. With my 4th grader, we work together one box at a time. Things like math and Barton, we do together. Some boxes have things he can do on his own. I don't write anything down in a planner. We just know what needs to be done next.
