  1. I have read that teaching/learning latin makes everything easier on children. So, I want to address my 11 yo...what program should I start her in and why? My preschooler...is there a program for him? What about one they both could use?
  2. Thanks ladies. I appreciate your input. I'm there with you Heather in NC. I do try to be a submissive wife, but balance it with my career (which is very part time, 4 shifts a month). I don't mean I allow my DH to run all over me, I mean I respect his authority over me and our home. Sometimes I have to set him straight though. LOL
  3. Will you be hiring? LOL Dh wants a job in Houston and we want to move there too. :D
  4. I mean, I let my children watch Hannah Montana and can't for the life of me figure out why it would be against conservative values. We teach courting not dating, our daughter dresses modestly, etc. We limit TV and moderate their music.
  5. After the post yesterday I got to wondering what the criteria of "conservative" was. I thought I was very conservative, but now I am wondering.
  6. I don't know if it is nation wide, but I got some wooden number and alphabet puzzles for $2.50 each. I also got some packages of fancy folders for lap books for $1.50 each. They were originally $7. They had almost all of their "schooling stuff" on sale. Just thought I would share in case you want to check it out. :D
  7. Well, when all 4 kids were here (the three older kids eat a lot) we were about $1,400 a month. Now, we are spending about $600 on groceries/toiletries/needs, and about $200 eating out.
  8. This is the one we will be using http://www.homeschoolingbible.com/index.html
  9. I just checked it out. I think it looks harmless. I am conservative and restrict a lot of things. I would have to read into a book. I think maybe this "magic" may be just as imaginative play and not witchery. If i were you I would look into it more. I like that it has parental controls. I do think virtual world play is beneficial as our kids gain crucial computer skills while using their imagination and playing. Again, that is just me. If you are not comfortable with it, draw your lines. :D
  10. I agree with your previous advice and just wanted to show some support. My own Aspie has rage issues and along with AS, has been diagnosed with PPD, ODD, and ADHD. It's so hard. I believe my 3yo also has AS (he is adopted). At least now I now how to parent him and what to look for. My older T was a mystery for so long.
  11. Ditto this But Guacamole is most definately wa-ca-mole (my kids call it wa-caca-mole because of what it resembles). However, I think it is acceptable either way.
  12. I am not a fan of those kind of videos. My kid would be in SO MUCH trouble for attempting that to begin with, even with a helmet. Helmet won't help if you meet a car.
  13. Okay...maybe you are misinterpreting spoiled rotten as ill behaved. Spirit is very well mannered and respectful. She is just well loved and very loving in return. As long as she minds her manners, she is rewarded with treats and play. My daughter is educated and so are we and people have said many times how strong her horse-skills are. So, saying our actions are not educated is a big jump from one phrase that was not mean the way it was taken. ***sorry to hijack the post***
  14. I think that is awesome. We had a stallion that was the sweetest most gentle guy (as long as no mare in heat was near). I believe the owners are the best source to talk to about their horses. I do believe that it is best to stay away until you know the horses, and NEVER get in the fence with them. That is especially important for your children. Now, if the owners are around, maybe they can help educate you and the children about proper horsemanship (which begins with staying safe and respecting a horses power). Then, you can begin to interact more with them. My 11yo DD has been helping her dad (he is a farrier) since she was 7. She is educated. She goes out and catches her own horse (who is only 2, halter broke and spoiled rotten). My 3 year old is FORBIDDEN around the horse unless an adult is there.
  15. What creative ways have you found to fund your curriculum buying? So, I can already see I have a curriculum addiction developing. I have taken time to research the curriculum we will use, and honestly didn't look at prices until I decided what we wanted to use. So, why is it that almost everything I have chosen has a hefty price tag? That being said, I do not want to change my decisions. I have the book "How to Homeschool for Free" but honestly, I prefer curriculum. My DH is flipping out about the costs, which are going to be pretty high because of establishing our homeschool the way I *feel* I need it to be in order to succeed (with sanity). So, I am looking for ways to fund this and not cause any undue strain. :D
  16. Looking at it now, thank you...this is a new one to me. Had not even heard of it.
  17. First thought I had was ketones in your urine. Diabetes or weight loss can cause this. Also other kidney ailments. Also other things can too. Diabetes is my first concern...I would have a A1c drawn to check your average levels. They could wax and wain.
  18. I will be HS an 11 and 4yo. I do not want to do "History of the World". I want something engaging and fun though. It's more important for my 6th grader than my preschooler. Please make suggestions. :D
  19. I am beginning to homeschool and also I'm in school FT. I also do classes online. I already have one degree and I am now in an accelerated online business degree. I find my online classes WAY more challenging and involved than my campus classes, but it is still the best option for me. My goal in pursuing this degree is to start my own business from home and do that as soon as possible. I need to do this while HS my last two children (:() so I have to find a way to make it all work. My aunt cleans my house once a month in exchange for something I sell. I told my family they have to deal with the house being less than perfect. Somehow I always get my homework done, even if I have to ignore stuff for awhile. I think it is worth it as long as my families needs are met. KWIM? So, call me crazy. I am accustomed to the label.
  20. My name is Heather and DH is Chris. We live in central TX, and will be home-schooling our 11yo DD and 4yo DS this year. I previously taught a 1st and 2nd grade bridge class for a co-op, and keep telling myself if I could teach 8 children to read, I can do this. However, I am still nervous for some reason. DD has decided to set a goal for herself of finishing high school at the age of 16. I just wanted to say hello and intro myself. By the way, I am also in college full time myself for a second degree. I do all of my classes online, so I am blessed that I will be able to work along side my children.
  21. New here. Live in between Waco and Ft. Worth. Looking to relocate to the Houston area as soon as DH finds a job there.
