  1. If I'm trying to send a message to someone who has a full folder.... Will she eventually get my messges when she empties her folder? Or, will I need to try every once in a while, hoping that it will go through? I just don't want to try a whole bunch of times, then have her swamped with all my attempts once she does empty her folder! :001_smile:
  2. :iagree: Don't take the fun out of it! I know from experience that he will enjoy the book more if it's his idea to read it. ;)
  3. I answered "other." I thought it was lovely. But it just didn't fit my son.
  4. Oh, thanks for the reports! Although I have talked with the company, I am so glad to hear from other folks that this is indeed enough work. :grouphug:
  5. Has anyone used this with a 7th grader? How was the workload? Were the 7th/8th grade supplement suggestions enough to bring it up to level? Could they do the work mostly independently? We're coming off 3 heavy years of TOG. This year I need something lighter & easy to implement. I asked this over on the K-8 board, but got no response. :001_smile:

We're coming off 3 heavy years of TOG. We're taking a break from TOG this year and I need something lighter & easy to implement.
  7. This was our idea also. Problem is that now the oldest is in High School, she has no idea what she wants to do. We tell the kids we will help pay for their first degree in a field that will earn a paycheck. Hopefully they will also have a passion for it! I don't care if it's tech college or a Bachelors.
  8. Here are the answers I got to the same question.... http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=154839
  9. Good question... simple and least-time-consuming are sometimes as important as most-well-rounded. :001_smile: These are the things I would do again and recommend without hesitation:
  10. :iagree: Even the folks at TOG don't want you to buy all the books! The Reading Assignments are like a menu... TOG wants you to pick-and-choose. Now as to what to choose, that's another thread. :001_smile:
  11. I love the DE version. After using the hard copies, I just knew that I wanted to have it in print. To save money, we decided to try the DE first and see if it could work for our family. I've never missed those binders & all the supplemental CDs! The supplements are right there so I can peruse them with only a click. I especially enjoy the "workbook" content on the Loom because I can cut-and-paste those assignments and edit as I choose. (The "workbook" on the Loom is simply .pdf copies of the student activity pages.) I did print out all the Reading Assignment Charts. We go back to those lists several times each week.
  12. The Analytical Grammar High School Reinforcement looks fun! Does it review all the grammar we learned in R&S? My daughter loved the sample. The Easy Grammar Ultimate Series is also interesting. I'd love to hear any comparisons of these two. I'm so glad I asked! Thanks for the ideas.:001_smile:
  13. After 8th grade R&S Grammar the series focuses on writing while reviewing the grammar we've already learned. Does anyone know a lighter program to keep my daughter's grammar skills sharp? She'll be using something else for writing. Any suggestions?
  14. This week I've been working on planning credits for my firstborn's high school years. From TOG she'll get all her history & literature credits as well as many others such as fine arts, economics, government, philosophy, etc... TOG is so much more than a reading list. It will be used for half of her high school credits! :001_smile: p.s. You can still buy a new paper copy of TOG, which can be resold. You'll get the current edition and it can't be upgraded.
  15. Rebecca, You have already gotten some good advice! Yes, stick with it especially since you will be using the same four TOG year plans over and over for years to come. ;) It WILL get easier. Although I like a lot of structure, I'm okay not making assignment sheets for anyone. I printed out the Reading Assignment pages for each unit, and put a check mark by the books we have. At the beginning of each week my kids look at the Reading Assignment page and make their own list of books to read, to be put in their notebook. (They started making their own reading list when in 5th.) For my little guy I don't make an assignment sheet either - I just look at the Reading Assignment page myself. I do print out their maps/worksheets/etc week by week. You could print them all out at one time at the beginning of the Unit. Do you have the DE edition? I print out the thinking/accountability questions from the "workbook" pages (on your loom, they are the Student Pages in a pdf file that you can cut & paste. I use less ink this way because I'm just printing the text, and sometimes I leave out a question or activity -or- combine levels.) My 7th grader started this year still on the UG level. We are now adding in just one or two of the DIA each week. You could combine the history with UG and try to get Lit on the Dia reading level. I would get the UG president book for UG & DIA to share. (I like it better than the DIA book... it's a hardback with color photos and plenty of text for the DIA student) The LG Lit books aren't always tied into the weekly topic. Take a look at the LG worksheets and see if your little ones would like them. If so, then you might want to choose some of the LG lit books that you like. Some of them have been bigger hits here than others. ;) An easy way to save would be to choose some other good picture books from the library. As for deciding which books to buy. I put most of my money on the higher levels. Doing every book for every level, every week would be overkill. I sat down with my hard copies of the weekly Reading Assignment sheets and first checked off any books we already owned. (like SOTW even though it's a alternate resource.) Then I tried to get all the multi-unit and as many of the multi-week books as possible. I do like the lit books and splurge in that catagory. Then I look to see just how heavy the workload is for each student that week. Sometimes I just stop right there because enough is enough. :001_smile: If they miss a worksheet for that week, it's okay! The discussions are more important that worksheets anyway. Even if one of them doesn't have the exact info in their reading, they are part of the discussion and learning. Also... one activity book is enough! This got long. I do hope it helps & didn't add to the frustration. I hoped to show that it can be done simply. One more thing... now that we're entering the R level I'm looking at what high school credit we'll be getting each year... then the R student will definitely do what is needed for that credit (Am Lit, Am His, World His, Philosophy, etc...)....... Maybe she will be doing D level for the rest? Just a thought.
  16. My kids don't really have a "passion." I know they may never develop a great passion. They may be just pleasant, well-balanced people. Like me ;). Yet, she will need to decide on a future career. I'd like to help her use these upcoming highschool years to their fullest. We've tried to take every opportunity presented to us... we've traveled, visited museums, been on mission trips, taken art & music lessons, read, etc... And, I've prayed they would find a passion. Now it's time to actively help my daughter start her search. How have your children found their passion? How do I begin to guide my daughter to her's?
  17. She doesn't have a college plan yet, so I'm trying to lay good general ground work that will leave her options. I hadn't even thought of statistics! What about Trig? Would Trig be needed in many fields? We want to stick with TT (after trying several other popular upper level programs.) And I want to finish the sequence with TT Pre-Calc. Jann, I agree with your thought to do another Pre-Calc before Calculus. But, then wouldn't it look bad on a transcript to do a year of Pre-Calc followed by another year of Pre-Calc?
  18. My 8th grader is in Alg 1 this year. If she takes Teaching Textbook Geo. in 9th, Alg 2 in 10th, and Pre-Calc in 11th... What about 12th grade?
  19. Can anyone compare upper level MUS to Teaching Textbook? I'm interereseted in algebra 1 first. Thanks!
  20. I'm wondering if the Rhetoric level Evaluations might be helpful with bookkeeping and giving a letter grade? Any thoughts?
