  1. I half grew up there. My grandparents still live there. It's a nice city. Definitely one of the nicer ones in the south bay area. I'm going apples for apples here. I've never been to PA, so I have no idea how it is going to be different from there.

Torrance has many older neighborhoods, with tree-lined streets. There is a decent amount of parks and a nice community center with a pool and theatre. There is all the shopping conveniences you could ever hope for, but that's not a unique thing in SoCal. I am more familiar with the western side of Torrance, around the Del Amo mall and closer to the Redondo side. It would be a much better commute than any OC city.

I'm sure Torrance has a gang presence. I cannot think of a single city in SoCal that doesn't. Repeat this mantra- gangs are not a huge deal, gangs are not a big deal. Truly, I grew up in SoCal and yes, they are present, but I can say that my life was NEVER effected by them. Now, if you move to Crenshaw or Watts, yes, your life will be effected, but there is no such thing as a gang free city in SoCal. And really, it'll be ok. The biggest visible impact they have is graffiti. I have never feared my safety in Torrance. Torrance PD is well respected and an excellent police force. I would live there in a heartbeat.

The biggest downside will be the traffic. A lot of the South Bay is not super close to the freeway, so I feel like there is a lot of street traffic overall in the city. I can't speak to the homeschool environment.

Overall, I think Torrance and Redondo Beach would be excellent options for you guys. Top of my list, if you don't want a killer commute. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk specific streets/neighborhoods, we could even chat on the phone if you want. Good luck!

  2. I'm forwarding the partial text I got from an email from my brother. He and his family are actually MOVING to Nigeria in a week - so I think I'll actually be receiving legitimate emails from the country!

He has a great sense of humor, eh?

Greetings from Abuja. As some of you know, the Prewitt clan have been considering another move overseas and found our new home this past week: Nigeria!

I am not writing to solicit your bank account details. We nevertheless appreciate legitimate help. More below.

On to business. This is an email from Nigeria after all. We would like your help in renting our house . . . .

    Very funny!

  3. 6yo ds started swim recently. This kid has been a fish all of his life. He has been swimming well (diving to the bottom of the deep end) since he was 2. We moved from Florida to NorCal a little over a year ago. So to set the stage- we've got a kid who has been swimming well for many years, but in a place where the pool temp was usually around 90 degrees.

His first week, it was frigid. They do heat the pool (I'm not sure to what temp), but the air temp was under 60. He really struggled with the cold. The following week, the temp jumped up to the 70s and he did great. So today, it was about 65 degrees and a bit breezy. As soon as he jumped in, I heard him say that the pool was colder than usual. I also heard one of the instructors say the same thing. He was shivering so bad, I ended up taking him out 10min early. I took his temp when we got home and it was under 96 orally. Is that even possibly accurate? I took it a few more times as he showered and it slowly raised back up to normal. I'm trying to figure out if this was an accurate reading. So I think I may do a rectal temp, but this kid will FREAK out over that. All of the other kids are FINE with the temp. Nobody is shivering or complaining. At least not in his age group. Do you think that maybe he just can't maintain body heat as well as the other kids? Or maybe it's just the adjustment from Florida temps? Our whole family has struggled with the temp change. This kid has not an ounce of fat on his body.

I'm trying to balance this with his general behavior during practice, which has not been spectacular. He tends to go underwater and wander while the coach is talking to them. He is also swimming terribly. He's hanging on the lane lines all the time, and just not swimming as well as I've always known him to be capable of. His behavior is definitely worse on cold days. So I've got a few thoughts bouncing around right now- is the behavior connected with the temp? Is it him just being a 6yo boy? (BTW, he has been disciplined for not listening during practice). What do I do about this temp issue?

    Any thoughts?

  4. DH laid down his motorcycle last night. Broken thumb, road rash knees, but otherwise he's fine. Thank God. But I have just absolutely hit my limit. I'm not freaking out on the outside. Nope, outwardly I'm just fine. And to tell the truth, there's not much to freak out about. Everything is fine. But somewhere in my brain, I have been screaming at the top of my lungs All. Day. Long. My house is still in stacks of stuff because we just moved in. My 8yo is still recovering from his surgery in January. I am running kids to sports stuff 5 days a week because we just moved here and I want them to make connections. We have an incredibly supportive congregation who has bent over backwards for us. We have been under such relentless spiritual attack since taking on this position. I cannot even explain how oppressive it has been. I am just so fully confident that God is with us here, but dang I wish ministry wasn't such a war field. I wish I could just have a toddler sized tantrum. I am so worn out. And if somebody tells me what great schools they have here one more time, I might spit. *If* I wanted to, for the first time I could send every single one of my kids off to school next year. it's tempting.

ok. I got it out of my system. Let's see if that helps....

  5. I've never thought of YouTube as a kid friendly site. Between the many inappropriate videos that are posted and the language that people use when commenting on videos, I've always put that in the Only-when-mom-calls-you-to-the-computer-to-see-something category. YouTube is not a kid site, nor does it advertise itself as such. I would just chalk this up to a lesson learned.

  6. I found a couple threads that discuss living in the South Bay area: Here, here, and here. It sounds like if you want to live close to your dh's job, Redondo Beach or Torrance may be the safest/best option.

I partly grew up in this area and I really love it. Be very careful to check out any possible areas. La and oc have a lot of nice cities that border on not so nice cities. It seems weird, but you can go from decently safe to lock your doors when you drive in matter of blocks. I would not move anywhere without visiting at least once. La mirada is another good suggestion. Good luck!

  7. We moved from Orlando to NorCal a year and a half ago. I don't think you can underestimate the sunlight factor. I have had a VERY hard time during the winter months. In the past, it has taken me a year to feel at home in a new place. We just moved about 2 hours away from where we started, so we've reset ourselves. I can see myself being happy here, but it doesn't feel like home just yet. Give yourself time. Get through the winter and let the sunshine help you along. ((((hugs)))) I can totally relate!
