  1. I was just musing about this today as I was watching my 6yo's swim practice. He's one in a group of 20 kids, all learning their strokes for the first time. I'm watching the coaches try to give step by step instructions. The boys in the group are all bouncing and bobbing, sometimes listening, sometimes distracted. At each lap I watched him and thought, "if I could just tell him this or correct that, he would get this so much faster." But the coaches are busy watching all of the kids and maybe once during the whole practice did ds get specific corrections. When he did get them (and on the couple of times that he was paying full attention during the group instructions), his improvement was dramatic and immediate. So transfer that to the classroom and it's no wonder they need 6 hours to accomplish what we do in an hour! I think that a lot of the time, the homework is just reproducing what we hsers do at home. Teachers expect (hope!) the parents to help tutor the kids through their homework. The kids who's parents do the work with them are the ones who do well because they are the ones getting tutored at home.

    just a few wandering thoughts...

  2. That's FANTASTIC!! It's so funny, when we went into full time ministry I thought that it was the end of our vacation days. I just didn't see how we'd ever be able to afford one again, but God has been so faithful to provide us with better vacations than we were ever able to take before. What a huge blessing for you guys! Not that this is totally a vacation, but still, WOW!

As for any meaningful help, I've got nothing. Sorry!! I would just explore and soak it all in.

  3. The death of a pet is, unfortunately, not a new experience for me so I know the pain and I know that it eases in time. My ds, however, isn't quite so confident and she will leave a big hole in his heart and life. When we adopted her my family thought we were nuts . . . we had just brought home a new son and he was 4 yrs old (okay they thought we were nuts doing that too lol!). But I had seen a notice on a bulletin board that a family, who's 4 yr ds had just been diagnosed with leukemia, needed to find a home for their mutt. Well my dad had just died of leukemia so I had to go check out this dog. Well, she just jumped into our van, not waiting for our decision lol! She was a bit dirty and had been primarily an outside dog. We took her home. Cleaned her up and made her an inside dog (with plenty of outside activities). She lapped it up like a queen. And she bonded with our new son (and even made friends with our basset hounds) and I am convinced made his transition into our home one hundred percent easier. Tonight I cry tears remembering those early years. I cry tears because she was so loyal to our boy and family. I cry tears because my son is sad. But I know this is part of life.

    Thanks for thinking about us.

Oh what a blessing she was! I love the way God uses animals in our lives. How much better is life because of the presence of our pets?! Many prayers for your son tonight.

  4.

I think I've still got most of those down, too, but the lyrics I'll never, EVER forget are Young MC's "Bust a Move". The rhyming doesn't get any better than that. "Libido-tuxedo", "lighter hope-celibate rope"...and who can forget "They're lyin' on the beach perpetrating a tan so a brother with money can be their man"?:D:D:D

Every once in awhile, Colleen, you really surprise me. Too funny!

  5. If you want to learn more about "Nightshade Arthritis" you can vist www.noarthritis.com

It's been about ten years since I realized that I am one who cannot tolerate the solanine content of the nightshade vegetables. When I abstain from eating them I feel like a completely different (and better) person! No stiffness, no joint pain, no insomnia. I know there are others out there, but sometimes I feel like the only one.

Just looking for commiseration, I guess.

The nightshade vegetables include white potatoes, peppers (of any kind), tomatoes and eggplant.

I was a biology major, and I didn't realize that all of those vegetables were in the same family, Solanacea, until I had to find out what was wrong with my joints.

Do you have this? Or if you have arthritis symptoms, have you tried to stay away from these vegetables and experienced improvement?

I have never heard of this. I may need to start eliminating some things from my diet. Thanks for the info!

  6. We will be hsing our dd through 8th grade. She's not very mathy and I'm seriously torn over what to do next. My goal is for her to complete algebra before highschoo, but I'm flexable. Here's what is on my radar-

    MUS pre alg- too easy?

    TT?

    Singapore 6?

    Chalkdust?

LoF? We are using this as a supp right now.

???????? I'm so overwhelmed by all of the options. TIA!

  7. Mine is a brand new MacBook. Guess I should get out the user manual and take a look? I just assumed that I had to buy more stuff...but you say all I need to do is buy a router?

    Lucinda

That's it! I'd either get the Apple Airport or a lynxis router. Nothing to do on your computer till you have the router. You will have to set up your network (make sure you put a password on it!) and after that, your MacBook will always be connected to your network.

  8. I have a brand new iMac and it should be wireless. Unfortunately, there's a flaw in some part of the Mac software (it can affect the desktops and laptops) that makes it impossible for me to stay connected to the internet. Grrrr. Reading Mac forums had opened my eyes...I'm not alone. So, my lovely Mac is plugged in (not a big deal since it's a desktop, but still).

Anyway, you'll need a wireless router. Your Mac should have the software needed to connect...as long as it doesn't have the bug. No way to tell until your Mac gets weird...

    Ria

That's a bummer Ria. We have an iMac and Macbook pro, both wireless. So are they not fixing this issue for you? I think I'd park myself in the Apple store till they fixed it. Or replaced it.

  9. It sounds like you are blending a few different technologies here. First off- wireless Internet access (in your home) requires broadband or DSL internet access ($30-50/month), a wireless router (not sure on the price) and a computer that is has a wireless card. Many desktops have the wireless card or the ability to add one. Laptops (unless they are old?) would also have this. Other than the initial equipment and the Internet access ( which you already pay for) there is no cost.

If you have a laptop, you can get Internet access anywhere that has Wifi. Many places are free, some are not. If you are not in a place with wifi, the only way to get access is through a cell phone company which can be quite expensive (I think somewhere around $50-75 a month on top of your cell bill).

  10. I would highly recommend SWB's audio CD Writing Without Fear. She explains in detail the different skills involved in writing and how to develop them. Her book, Writing With Ease does this in greater detail, but for a non hser, the cd should be a good start. From what you have shared, it sounds like this teacher's approach to writing is typical of most schools- lots of creative writing with developmentally inappropriate expectations. I'm not sure what the solution is for that (other than the obvious:).

  11. That is just it, she is not a K'r. She completed MFW K when she was 3. She is reading at a 5th grade level. She was adding and subtracting and writing letters and numbers at 3. She was 6 in July. She attended half of K at the PS after she turned 5. It seems like she has been backsliding (part of that is because of her pencil grip. In the past, she has been able to write and draw beautifully with her pencil held incorrectly, but as more is required it isn't working.) :(

I think it's important to remember that a children plateau at certain points. I think it can be hard on parents when a child is SO far ahead of their peers, and then they hit one of these points where they stall out for awhile. It seems like your expectation is for her to progress forward at the same pace. That my not be the case! At her age, I would definitely NOT stop other fun stuff just to work on these skill areas. Take some time off of progressing forward, and start going back to what she's already learned, but from different angles. I LOVE the suggestion of living math books. Have you spent any time on Living Math? I would also purchase some math fact songs and hit it from that angle.

You know, my 6 year old started swimming when he was a year old. By 2, he was diving down and touching the bottom of our 6 foot deep pool. Now, as a 6yo, he's still a good swimmer, but many of his friends have caught up. A little part of me wanted him to always be far ahead of his peers, because at one point, he was blowing them out of the water so to speak.

Be careful that you are allowing your dd to go along at her own pace, not just the pace she set for herself when she was 3.

  13. I am soooo excited to have a new family member. After nine months of having an empty box, finally we have a member.

I am just praying everyday, he/she stays for a very long time. Since Barry(thats my name for him), arrived, I here no more scuttling through the house.

    Doin the happy dance.....:lol::lol:

If I had scuttling in the house, I'd be doing a dance too! As it is, our scuttling sounds come from our 4 lb chihuahuas. I actually fear predatory birds, because I've heard of them taking off with other people's little dogs!

  14. I almost never say anything about his driving. I just shut my eyes, and try to relax, so that if we run into somebody, I won't be all stiff, making it harder to recover. LOL.

    This is hilarious!

That's exactly what I do! Dh always drives when we're together. I keep myself from back seat driving by shutting my eyes. I have the superior driving record (no accidents or tickets compared to 3 accidents and 3 tickets in the last 3 years), so it's more about keeping the peace than who actually drives better.
