  1. We started school just this week. We moved across the country at the beginning of August and went "home" to visit family for a week. So, we have gotten a bit of a late start. This is my first year homeschooling completely by myself. In CA, we had a charter school that provided plans and books. We are very closely following TWTM for 5th and 1st. I also have 2 toddlers (literally) running around (2 and 1). We haven't even done any Latin or Spanish this week and it seems to be taking FOREVER to finish each day. My 1st grader is doing fine, but my 5th grader seems overloaded with stuff to do. Here is what he is doing:

Saxon 7/6 one lesson a day with warm up and fact sheet

    LLATL 1 lesson a week

Reading for LLATL and free reading around 1 hour day

handwriting practice 1/2 page a day

History outlining KF with mapwork from Uncle Josh's outline maps plus timeline

Science reading and summary paragraph plus experiments when applicable

Geography Trail Guide to US Geo. 3 times a week

    Lively Latin

    Rosetta Stone Spanish

We haven't even done any languages this week. I would also like to add Writing Strands but I just don't know how we can fit it in. What would you "delete" if you had to? Geography seems to be taking a LOT of time, but he hasn't had any US geo. and I think he needs to know the states. Maybe this is completely normal for 5th grade. It just seems like SO much work. What do you guys thing?

I would drop handwriting, trail guide and a language.

  2. [sarcasm] Well, you know, there are a LOT of women out there, subversively signing their kids up for homeschool groups behind their husband's backs. Taking them on field trips, feeding them healthy lunches, all under his nose, but without his knowledge. It's time to crack down on these women and keep them in line! They shouldn't join if their husbands don't expressly allow them. After all, they obviously can't be trusted by their husbands to decide that the children would benefit from the group, and the group leaders certainly can't trust that the women are there with their husband's support and approval. Good on them for taking a stand! [/sarcasm]

    :lol::lol: Dang I miss reps.

  3. Funny, Last sunday all "teachers" etc including Homeschoolers were suppose to stand up. I didn't and my mom and husband were saying... "stand up!". Anyway, we're all responsible to teach our children. It's our responsibility and we decide what part of it we'll do...and what part we will "hire-out". So ALL of the parents could have stood, right??

I'm just as responsible for my daughter who goes to Public school (ok..well she's step..so it's not my decision:-) as my children who I school. Sometimes, I think it should be that way. Everyone who sends their children, stand up, so you remember that you're the person held responsible for your child's education. We're praying for you today, so that you'll remember to stay involved:-)

    Carrie

Can you imagine how convicting that would be? I can just see the expressions on the faces of parents who really truly think it is not their job.

  4. Your has son sensory issues. End of story.

His needs must be accommodated. He has a right to expect as much. And no parent should apologize for looking out for her child. Even the Principal of the school.

Your school should do the same for all the young people.. It's the right and proper way for the world to work. It is a Mitvzah.

You are thinking rightly in every way. Resolve your own mind. You know the right thing to do.

    Cheers.

    Bill

    :iagree:

  5. If they are not making negative comments, I think it's just chatting with costumers. What on earth is wrong with that? I like to chat with store clerks and others. I like living in a community, and I very much like it when the deli person knows my daughter prefers Baby Swiss over American cheese, for instance.

I can't even fathom living someplace where people would do all their errands and chores in silence for fear of offending by saying, "Oh, looks like you all love milk" or , 'You sure do have your hands full!" or whatnot.

    :iagree:

I'm just not that easily offended.

  6. Amazon has free shipping. I've done the math, and even with paying for the guide, it's the same price or a little less ordering the books from Amazon for AS I and Animal Worlds. It was more expensive not to order the complete Children around the World package from WP. Those are the only programs I've priced.

We're doing QAW and it would have been slightly more to go through amazon. Something like $20. I'm KICKING myself for not doing it that way. That would have been $20 well spent.

  7. Hi all,

So I emailed them and was called this morning. Very kind, very apologetic. This is my second phone call, and as you all said, every call has been pleasant. I was assured that I'll receive the books by Tuesday at the latest. So, we'll see! I feel like they need a business coach to come in and help them with this situation.

UPDATE- The books never came! I called last night, received a call back this morning. The story? An order was placed on 8/21 through Amazon, but Amazon canceled the whole order. What? So a week BEFORE my initial call this all happened, but you never mentioned this to me? I'm not buying it. I am now being told that half of the books were shipped priority on Wed (2 day after I was told I would receive them), the other half were ordered over Amazon this morning, 2-day shipping over a holiday weekend. Great! My school year has just been set back 2 weeks. Never again will I order a full package from them.

  8. For me, the sex and [sexual] language were over the top. The story was fantastic. This book would make such a great discussion on predestination. I mean really, did they ever have a choice but to marry each other? What came first, Claire meeting him in her childhood or them meeting in their 20's? Where/when exactly was the genisis of that relationship?

For me, THAT was the meat of the book. I also loved that Henry was so gritty, so unlikable, so broken.

I bought the book, but I doubt that I'll give it away like I do with most books. Not because I want to keep it so badly, but because it's really too graphic for me to just hand out. I am flabbergasted that it would be assigned reading for a 13 year old. I can't imagine.

  9. Some one started this note. I would change it to say.

"I understand how you view this situation, but I have checked with ds and he doesn't have the toys. I am sorry that you are convinced he does. Due to the 3 unfortunate situations (Lure, toy in suitcase, and this episode) and ensuing lack of trust between the boys, I feel like we should take a break from having them together. While I am absolutely certain he didn't take the toys, I will pay for you to replace them. Use this site to inventory and order the correct parts, http://www.bricklink.com/index.asp

Email me a copy of your paid and delivered invoice and I will reimburse you for the missing man and car. (your name)

This puts the burden of replacement for the exact item back on her plate. The site allows her to exactly replace each item with original parts so the sets are complete for "garage sale or ebay". It does not give her a gift card for a "free shopping trip" to Target. I would almost lay money on her never getting around to placing the order. If she does place the order, you will pay only for the parts necessary to complete the set. Then I would make a mental note of not being available for anymore playdates with this family.

Great idea! This really covers all of the bases.

  10. That must have been in 2004, no?? That was a fun season. After being locked in the house for 5 days with hurricane Frances I decided that rum was most definitely a necessary hurricane supply!

That was a memorable year for us. My youngest was born in the middle of Charlie. Very stressful for us to have the kids riding out tornado warnings in our laundry room with dh and I stuck at the hospital. That was also Friday the 13th. The child has so far lived up to her wild beginnings. God save us when we hit the teen years with her.

Then there was Francis, which looked like it was going to be a monster, but stalled and weakened. That was the easiest on us. Last was Jeane. That was the definitely the hardest on our house. Our friends stayed with us because their house was still damaged from Charlie. They got stuck at our house for days. We had some scary moments with Jeane and a decent amount of water intrusion.

I love California for the weather. I haven't watched tge weather channel in over a year!

  11. I am planning on using Ancients this year with my 7th grader. Have you seen any of the IEW materials before? Are you familiar with the method? I ask because I don't think I would understand the Ancients materials as well if I hadn't watched TWSS previously. I've never seen SWI, so I'm really not sure about that.

I haven't actually used any of the TWSS methods with dd yet. My plan for introducing them is to use the workshop disc that comes with TWSS and have dd go through that over the course of a week or 2. Then we'll start Ancients, which has 22 lessons. We'll wrap up our year with a research project.

  12. Nadia,

Perhaps you can answer a question for me. I just saw today in our newspaper the article on the woman in France not allowed to wear a burquini to the pool. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090813/ap_on_re_eu/eu_france_burquini_banned

In the article, the reason given is "These clothes are used in public, so they can contain molecules, viruses, et cetera, which will go in the water and could be transmitted to other bathers". Am I totally off the mark in thinking that this sort of outfit is probably no more likely to be worn by a Muslim woman at the grocery store than someone else would wear their string bikini (though it is France........;))? On the face of it, this seems a remarkably ridiculous statement.

I had no idea that the French legislation had that much control over religious expression. That is scary and sad. I don't understand how telling a woman that she can't wear something of her choosing helps her feel liberated. Yuck.

  13. The bugs are bad. BAD. Do yourself a favor and get a service. It's worth the money. I thought of it as an investment in my sanity.

That said, I LOVE Florida. Love it. Homeschooling is easy there, don't be intimidated by the portfolio. Hsers in FL get a lot of perks from the school system. If you don't want the perks and would rather fly under the radar, umbrella or non traditional private schools are always an option.

The weather is fierce, but I grew to love it. What is not talked about much is Florida's beautiful winters. Dry and mild temps from Oct till April.

What part are you moving to? We lived in Orlando for 7 years.

  14. I agree with the poster who suggested caffeine. I also recommend talking on the phone. With a cordless to my ear, I walk around picking stuff up. This may only be true because I'm so nervous while talking.

I usually play Ramones or Bad Religion, if I have no phone calls, very very loudly. Once my six-year-old came out of his room, paused the CD player right after I hit play, and said, "Who is coming over?" :D

I usually do my grocery shopping with Bad Religion or Everclear playing on my iPod. :-)
