Free HS American History at HS Buyers Coop
Tressa replied to littlebug42's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We are studying American History next year, so I bought it. I think it looks OK. Maybe for some things when he gets tired of reading the very thick book that I bought him. :001_smile: Thanks for sharing. You can't beat 7.95. -
I'm asking for prayer for dd. I'm scared.
Tressa replied to Parrothead's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It could be a swollen lymph node. My daughter had one in the same place. It was huge and took forever to go away. Definitely take her to the doctor, but I just wanted to hopefully give you a little peace of mind tonight. -
How do I make my 10th grader care?
Tressa replied to Rita's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I have a 10th grade son too. He is fairly unmotivated. He does very well when he is motivated. I think that is the most frustrating thing about my son. He can do very well if he wants to. There are a couple of things that I have let him drop. That has helped. I also find that he does much better in the day if he has had physical exercise or hard labor. He recently helped a friend clear blackberries and it improved his attitude that day about everything. He has also recently started driving. That has also improved his attitude. It is strange. I don't know if it is the responsiblity of it or if he just feels more grown up. We still go head to head about many things, but I think he is tired of listening to me. Heck, I am tired of listening to me. I think some kids just have a hard time finding their inner motivation. Unfortunately, life is about finding motivation for things we don't want to do. My son tries to tell me that he can't stay focused on things he doesn't like. I tell him to try harder. Loving, I know. :tongue_smilie: We all have to do things we don't want to do. It sounds like your son is finding what interests him and can stay focused there. That is great! But, they have to learn to do the things they don't want to do and I don't think there is anything we can do to fix that for them. We all have had to figure that out on our own. Another thought.. I was thinking about this a little more. Maybe you could help him develop some tools that will help him stay on task and get more motivated. For example, he could tell himself that he will work on such and such for 30 minutes and then reward himself with something that he wants to do. Help him make some goals for himself and write them down and put them in a place that is always visible. As adults we reward ourselves all the time. Why can't a teen? Just a thought. -
Where to go after Saxon Alg. 1?
Tressa replied to Sue G in PA's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I know that this is a worry for some, but my son took the PSAT as a 10th grader after only completely Saxon Alg. 1 and about 35 lessons into Alg. 2. He did just fine on the PSAT. -
Active Duty Navy personnel take it all the time. They have all graduated.:001_smile:

Poll: How long did you date before getting engaged?
Tressa replied to lisamarie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We were engaged 2 months after meeting and he was gone for 6 of those weeks. :001_smile: We just knew. We married 4 months later. I have since learned that we make all our decisions quickly. It is who we are. -
My dad has been on it a year. He has RA. It could be because he is a man, but he has not gained any weight. He doesn't have many side effects. In fact, he loves it because it makes him feel so much better. The doctors can't seem to get a handle on his pain and prednisone takes it away. I think he would take it even he had a lot of side effects. That is how much better it makes him feel. Is there a plan to wean you off? My dad has been able to wean himself to a very low dose which is still effective for him. Maybe you can do that too?

We got ours today too. Yay! He did well. I am proud of him!

No scores in the mail today for us today. :glare:

I have decided to wait since the high school doesn't have the scores for their kids either. I did call one more time, and was denied access. This time after telling the woman on the phone what it says on their website, she put me on hold, and told me that it is the high school that will mail me the scores. I guess I will just be patient. The woman at the high school was very friendly, so if I have any trouble I know that I can talk to her. My son doesn't care much about his scores. It is kind of comical. I am sure he did well if his practice test is any indication. I should follow his example and let it go for awhile. :001_smile:

Hey, it gets better. I called the high school where my son took the test and they don't have the scores for any of the kids. They were discussing why they haven't received the scores yet because it was very odd. They told me after Christmas. When I told them that others had their scores, they were surprised and are going to do some digging.
-
This is exactly what happened to me. I called the SAT help center. According to them, I need to call the high school because they will have the scores. Even though my son was told that they would be mailed here. I guess I will just wait. I would have preferred a "the scores are in the mail" to the "the high school will have them". She was just spouting off the line in front of her. Irritates me.

No scores in the mail here either.

Does anyone stop grammar after grade 8?
Tressa replied to 4kids4me's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I did. He had his grammar down. I will be stopping my 8th grader after this year too. They are getting plenty of grammar with their Latin. -
I have been told that the three big hurdles in Latin are 3rd declension, 3rd conjugation, and the subjunctive. I am stuck in the passive subjective. Does this mean that once I get passed this hurdle I am in the clear? I hope so. I am beyond frustrated right now. Fortunately, my son isn't as frustrated and is moving along nicely.

Did you get a lot of ToT'ers?
Tressa replied to Mejane's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We had about 150. Parents drive their kids to my street and wait in their cars for them to walk my street. We are one of the few streets in town with sidewalks. I don't mind all the kids. However, I did mind the adults that were dressed up looking for a candy hand-out. I am "hoping" they were trick or treating for a sick child. -
Has anyone had a dd who suffered from UTI's and
Tressa replied to sarawatsonim's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My daughter had awful UTI's when she was little. They were asymptomatic until they were horrible. The doctor wanted both an ultrasound and VCUG. Both are standard protocol for multiple UTI's. I agreed to the Ultrasound, but the doctor told me 1 more UTI and she would have to have the VCUG. I agreed to that. It was no big deal. It has been too long, so I don't remember what they are looking for. Everything was normal for her. She never did need the VCUG. -
Latin for high school credits?
Tressa replied to shanvan's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We are using Henle. We did a little Latin in grade school using Latina Christiana 1 and 2. Then, started with Henle 1 in 9th grade. I used the Mother of Divine Grace syllabus and awarded 1 credit. I award credits based on hours. If he is spending 5 hours/week, I give 1 credit at the end of the school year. -
PSAT and the Wolves
Tressa replied to stephanier.1765's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My son took it at the local public high school. It was fine. I just dropped him off. Apparently, the school separted the homeschoolers from everyone else. It seemse they went to great lengths to make sure that we are going to receive our results at home. I appreciate that. I was also surprised at the small number of kids taking the test. Our public high school is one of the largest in the state and there were probably less than 200 kids taking the test. When the Junior class is 800 kids strong, 200 kids is pretty small number.
