  1. My mother used to say, "The only people who use that kind of language are people with small vocabularies."
  2. I second 123 Gluten Free and Namaste mixes, and tinkyada pasta. Coconut flour makes nice moist cupcakes. Our Kroger carries Rodelle vanilla extract that's gluten free.
  3. Yes, we got a package of frozen veggies and put on it right away. She's back to playing now, but is still favoring that arm.
  4. She's using her hand, so I'm hoping that's all it is. I'm going to watch it for a while and see what it does. I hate to take her to the emergency room if it's not broken, but now I'm going to worry to death for the next few hours till I know it's not.
  5. I don't hear anything crackling or see anything moving that shouldn't be. The knot on her arm is turning black and blue. Maybe she just bruised it real good?
  6. OH, you must have been posting the same time I was. Thanks, I'll check that real quick.
  7. My dd hit her arm on something and has a swollen knot on a couple inches above her wrist where the bone in her arm is. I asked her to move her wrist and she can, but says it hurts.
  8. I didn't vote, because I'm a left handed knitter so neither choices describes what I do. English would be the closest, but left handed instead of right. However, with the way I knit I can pick stitches like a continental knitter. And if I'm feeling lazy and don't want to purl a row I knit it backwards-- which amounts to continental knitting like a righty. Anyhow, it doesn't really matter what style you teach them so long as they are comfortable holding the yarn and needles. Knitting is a 2 handed process anyway you look at it. I would give them the option of doing it either way-- show them they can hold the yarn in the left or right hand and let them find their own way from there. That's what I did for my dd. I knit left handed, but my dd knits continental because it's comfortable for her. Good luck
  9. We'd have to have all our utilities cut off, then it would come down to making the house payment or havign enough gas in the car to go to work. We'd honestly end up living out of our car.... or a tent in the yard
  10. I'm going to be the odd ball in this post ;) I was going to buy them for physics experiments this year, but it seemed to me that they were too expensive considering a lot of the components seem to be things I could come up with on my own easily. So I figured all I really needed were ideas for experiments, then I could come up with the rest on my own. I found an ebook free online of physics experiments for kids (if you're interested, let me know and I'll dig it up for you). Then found a book at the thrift store, was given some books on things like magnets, then bought a couple books inexpensively from someone on here. We've got tons of ideas now, and they all use things that are hanging around my house anyhow, and can be supplemented with library books. This promises to be a very cool, very fun year for science.
  11. I was always painfully shy, all thru elematary, middle school, and jr. high. We changed schools a few times, which didn't help because I had to make friends all over. BUt I usually managed to have 1 or 2 good friends, and that was it. Then when I got to high school, my dad encouraged me to try theater arts, which turned out to be really good for getting me out of being shy. At a younger age, I don't think there would have been anything you could have done to push me out of being shy tho. In fact I think, for me at least, that puttig me in social situations would have caused me to withdraw more. I had to get to a certain age where I could handle it, and find myself in a situation that happened to be just right for me to 'blossom', ykwim?u
  12. We're in the country, so there are no quick trips to the grocery store here. If you forget chicken, then you're eating vegetrian tonight, LOL. Either that or we're getting that aluminum wrapped pack of mystery meat out of the freezer and solving the mystery. We have a little problem with meal planning here too. I can plan something like frito pie. Then DH comes along late at night, finds the bag of fritos that were hidden and eats the entire bag. I go and cook chili the next day, get ready to serve the meal and realize there's no fritos. DH says, well I didn't know! Or I forget to buy something even tho it was on my shopping list (I have 3 small kids with small bladders that function at different intervals, I get distracted a lot). Or no one is in the mood to eat what I had planned, or a million other things that could go wrong. Anyhow, I sort of mentally have a master list of groceries-- things I can make serveral different meals out of, even if I don't have all the ingredients for one. That allows for creativity when emergencies come up. Meals here are very simple: a protein, a startch(or sometimes we skip this and add extra veggies), and 2 servings of veggies/fruit. When things start to seem complicated sticking to that formula helps a lot.
  13. Thanks! I have a pretty good idea of where and when to do it, now I have to work out the details of the classes. Do you think it would be better to plan out a very specific curriculum, or general ideas and tell everyone that moms who want to help out can get together with me and work out the details?
  14. I'm working on an idea to present to our home school group. Right now they meet once a week to play tennis, and once a month they get together for some sort of field trip. That's about it. I mentioned in another thread that there is a meeting coming up to put together the upcoming year and I wanted to suggest we add some sort of art/music/history class on a regular basis for the elementary aged children. I'm trying to get my thoughts organized before I present the idea and wonder if you all would help me. I've never been a part of anything like this before and I'm not sure how it works. There is a church whose fellowship hall Im sure I would be able to use. So now I'm thing things like how will the class be set up? what all will it involve? how will it be funded? who will teach? I read music, play an instrument, and am artsy-- but I don't think I would want to teach all by myself for a whole year, yk? Some things I'd really like it to cover are art/music in relation to history theater arts learning to read music and play simple instruments explore various forms of art singing, learning folk songs Do y'all think this is a good idea? Do you have any suggestions for setting it? presenting the idea?
  15. I wanna come to school at your house! LOL  I'm watching this thread with great attention. There's a meeting for our hs group to plan the upcoming year this weekend. I won't get to go, but I was thinking about calling one of the moms and having her make a suggestion for me. I was thinking it would be great if we could get together on a regular basis and do something with music and art for hte elementary aged children. So I'm :bigear: I"m thinking explore different periods of history (in different cultures too) and the music and art of that era. Explore different forms of art, put on plays learn about costumes and the stage, learn to read music and maybe play an instrument (simple instruments like the recorder, triangle, wood blocks), sing folk songs.
  16. She did say the $ was based on how much work you produce. Right now $15 is about where she's at, that's between kids, house, and school.
  17. I don't have any training in medical transcription. I was talking to a friend over the weekend and telling her that DH was looking for a higher paying job, but now because he has to have surgery and will have to be out of work for a while (and really he needs to apply for disability) that I should start looking for work so he can get this done. But I can't go anywhere and make what he makes starting out, plus I never finished college and have no degree or training in anything. Anyhow, she sent me this info on the school she went thru, it has financial assistance, and she has been able to support herself since going thru the training.
  18. That is what I want to hear, your experience, even if it was bad. I appreciate the honesty.
  19. Has anyone here taken online classes for Medical Transcription? Someone sent me some info on it and she says she's making $15 an hour doing this (but that's after doing it for a while). Sometimes work is good, sometimes a little slow, but it does give her the extra money she needs. But she also said with the economy down, it's a little slow right now and some people are having a hard time finding work but it is projected to come up in the near future. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this, do think it's a good thing to go into? We desperately need some extra income, so I really have to do something-- I'm hoping this might be the break I've been waiting for.
  20. I'm having insane curry cravings :D I fixed some veggies for supper last night with curry. I'm about to go make some egg salad with curry. What's your favorite way to use curry?
  21. This is just an odd ball suggestion, first thing that popped into my mind, don't know if it's helpful,..... but do you know any teenagers? Like at church, or a homeschool group, or where ever? Maybe you could ask one that your dd knows and likes to come do math work with her, or go to your local high school and talk to the math teacher about getting a student to tutor your dd. You might could get it low cost or free this way. When I was little, my brother was much older, and his friend had a younger brother in high school who would come over a lot and help me with math. That's why I thought of that. And it was fun to have someone young and cool to help me out. Good luck to you!
  22. Ooooohhhhh! That must have been it, they were just a few million years off. I had a map of Europe, Asia, and Africa 35,000-25,000 BC and we were looking at it while trying to figure out where in the world the could jump back and forth between snowy mountains, a rainforest, then walk over to Africa. It was driving us nuts :tongue_smilie:
  23. Have y'all seen this? We watched this movie last night. For the most part, I enjoyed it. It's not the most historically accurate film ever made, but that's OK. I can live with that. What is driving me absolutely insane tho, is trying to figure out where this was supposed to have taken place, geographically. The best I can tell is they took a hunk out of each continent, smooshed them together and created a whole new world. :001_huh:
  24. Thanks! I'm hoping it will pass with time. BUt I think it may also have something to do with having learned 'ing,' and that there may be some confusion there.
