  1. I don't remember her writing any books on the 'rapist', there were the Lord John books, but he was gay not a rapist. He raised Jamies son. The man who raped Jamie was a direct ancestor of Claire's other husband and this plays a really big role in their relationship later on.
  2. If you go to the library and pay for it, you're going to have to pay full price, what you would pay for a new tape, even tho it wasn't new, so they can replace it. I would look some more first. I had a book once that was returned, only it didn't get checked in for some reason, and the librarian and I dug in the children's room of the library till we finally found it. But a few weeks ago we had a book checked out from the main branch that I swore up down I turned back in, and had those ladies searching all over the library. Couldn't find it. I thought they checked it back out for, but when I got to our local branch the next week I found out they hadn't and I was being charged a quarter a day. I explained what happened to the librarian, she called the main branch, and got them to drop the late fees for me. A couple days later, I was pulling books out of a milk crate we keep some school supplies in.... there was the missing library book. I was so embarressed, I didn't even go in the library I just put it in the drop box. Usually my kids will loose tapes behind the TV, but sometimes they show up in toy boxes, under beds, or even in the bathroom cabinet. Or if my 3 yo had it, in the garbage, the dog pen, or under the kitchen sink where he built his baby a bed.
  3. Ignoring it has always worked best for my kids. The less attention they get, even if it is to correct them, the less reason they have to say it.
  4. Well. I was really hoping you'd say the workbooks would be fine, LOL. They're cheap OK, I'll keep looking for it used. Thanks
  5. Do I need anything other than the student book? Do I have to have the cd's and TM? TIA
  6. As far as being useful later in life.... I don't know what you're kids interest are, but what if by studying ancient times, it sparks some interest in them. It could stay with them, and maybe one day lead to them becoming historians or folklorist, or archaeologist. Ancient times are really fascinating. And I think studying ancient mythology does a lot to develop literary skills.
  7. I couldn't get the pdf file to open up, it said file corrupt, so I had to open it as an html but if you want to google it, you have better luck than I did. Here's the html link q=cache:EycC50CUGJIJ:http://www.vidyaonline.net/arvindgupta/physicsexperiments.pdf+Physics+Experiments+for+Children&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us
  8. OK, I'm going to answer myself. LOL I found the book Physics Experiments for Children as a free book online. Simple experiments with household items, it looks very do-able. We could make a science notebook and keep tract of the experiments and results in it.
  9. the WTM has this listed as a geography resouce, to be bought at Rainbow Resources. I looked it up and it's unavailable. What would be a good substitute? Are they just blank maps? Would printing maps off enchantedlearning.com be OK?
  10. I was just looking at them. DD wants the one for crystals. BUt after I looked at the picture of it and realized it was things like a box of salt and a mason jar, I'm wondering why I should get the kit instead of doing it ourselves at home? Are the student books worth paying for the kit? And is there anywhere I can get them that is cheaper than $39?
  11. If I get SOTW do I need to also get the Kingfisher and Usborne books to go with it? The activity guide? Or is the SOTW book alone enough for 2nd and 4th graders? WT-- do I need the TM or is just the student book enough? TIA
  12. either had to have something in her hands to play with or has to be able to move constantly before she can focus on school?
  13. you mean something like waldorf-ishy CM inspired, wannbe classicly educated, eclectic, non-radical sudo-unschoolers? :D This sounds a lot like us and what I want for us. Thank you for sharing how you use these ideas. I love the idea of keeping a notebook for yourself! What a great way to set an example! That could count as unschooling I do believe. While I love the idea of unschooling, I really don't think radical unschooling was exactly what John Holt had in mind. I think his message was more to get kids out of ps and find a better way to educate them that allows for teaching them as individuals, and in a real life setting (just my opinion :)) So yeah, I'd totally call that unschooling. Thanks for sharing!
  14. Anyone here do this? I read about it on a blog and was curious as to how it works
  15. I've got a copy of WTM from the library... 1999. For the grammar stage it has 18 wks earth science, 18 wks astromomy.
  16. The most I have spent was almost $400 for 2 kids combined. This year will be 3 kids and I'm afraid it may get closer to $500+, getting everything possible used. Hoping I get some really good deals, or dh may have a heart attack LOL
  17. Yes, I'll have a 2nd grade doing latin too, and my 4th grader has never done latin. But I have been keeping something like minimus in mind for her incase she does need something more challenging. From the sample I looked at it looks like WT has grammer and spelling in it, but I've never used it, so I wanted to check with you all and see if it was as complete a program as it appears to be. But as I said, I don't want to overwhelm her here either, we've never done this kind of thing before. I've never used SOTW before, and I really have no idea what's in it. Once I see it, I'll have a better idea of what we want to do with it. But I'm keeping the mosaic guide in my head in case we want to add on to it. My 4th grade devours books and loves lots of crafty stuff. My second grader loves a little crafty stuff, but not all the books. SO I may end up doing this on 2 different levels, and I'm collecting ideas :D Thanks guys
  18. SO you think I should add something like the galore park english book? This will be our first year of doing anything this structured, I'm trying to expose her to everything without overwhelming her, ykwim?
  19. have I covered everything? Do I need to add spelling or copywork or anything? Writing Tales School Song Latin tons of library books Math Mammoth SOTW vol 1 (maybe use Mosaic curric, it looks really good) Science in a Nutshell physics kits music and art from various sources
  20. Thanks! I was hoping they were going to be as good as they looked! I have 3 kiddos, so 3 workbooks comes out perfect.
  21. Anybody want to compare/contrast WP AW with WTM Life Science? We like things that have reading as well as hands on, and it looks like both have that. Would I come out less expensive with WTM? Which one is more mom friendly, easier to use? I know WP looks pretty, and I'm having a hard time getting past that. LOL
  22. Thanks! OK, I'm making a list here: Kumon workbooks Singapore EB workbooks Phonics Pathways art and craft books that aught to keep him busy, right?
