  1. I think they weren't saying that a PhD is easier to get, it's more that an associates or possibly a bachelors degree is now the high school diploma, which lowers the value of the PhD, ykwim? One of the teachers is a college instructor and he complains about kids coming out of high school that don't have the math, and other, skills they need to earn their degree. Then the other was a middle school teacher who has students that are no where near on grade level. They can't do their work, the parents either are so lacking in education themselves or just don't care so the kids aren't getting help from home. She cannot fail them, because in honesty most of the class would fail then she would get fired for failing them. Which is not fair to anyone, but that's what it's turned into. I know that skills have changed, that what students learn today has to be different than what they learned in the past. But some things never change, some skills will always be necessary. My grandma only went to school thru the 8th grade, because back then that was all that was available to girls. But what she did in 8th grade was harder than anything I ever had to do in school. And I was in honors GT classes. I guess what I mean is they aren't expected to work to their full potential like they once were. Then when they get to college (because they can go to college with a high school diploma they were given just for showing up at school for 12 years), what is that going to do? That's the problem the college instructor was having. The students he teaches can't do their work.
  2. I was listening to some teachers talking over the weekend about problems with the school system. One thing that came up is what a diploma is actually worth. The argument was that our society says you need a high school diploma to do anything, so they push kids thru school and everyone gets a diploma. It no longer means what it once did, and also that it has lowered the standard of education. And now because so many people are getting diplomas, much more people are going to college, so college degrees are no longer as valuable as they once were (in other words while a degree may be necessary, a PhD isn't what it used to be). I'm not trying to start any sort of arguement or debate here, but I am curious as to what you all think about this. Do you agree or disagree?
  3. Yes! My kids have breakfast around 8 and by 10-10:30 they are dying of hunger. It can be really frustrating when there is something I need them to get done but there's no point in fighting it because they can't focus until there tummies are full again. They want a snack again around 1, they are ready for supper by 4 and a snack around 7. THey do a lot of snacking in between those times too, but it has to be a fruit or veggie.
  4. What is it you want your children to get out of it? When I did Canturbury Tales in AP English, the only part we spent anytime on was the intro mainly to learn about that period of speach and how different it is than what we speak now before moving on to Beowolf and Shakespear. We had to memorize the intro an for some reason I can still remember it. Why I can remember that after 15 years when I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast this morning, I don't know... but there ya go. I think I need to go thru and delete some old files, make a little extra room in my memory LOL
  5. I've ordered twenty some odd books over the past month, and I'm procrastinating now. I"m dreading going thru each thing on my statement trying to figure out which charge goes to which book.
  6. So I spent the last few weeks hunting for curricula-- which that alone could cause insanity.... ;) Anyhow I bought the SOTW AG from a mom on here, then I could swear that I went to either half.com or amazon and bought SOTW 1 to go with it. Only it never came in. So I went to both sites and checked my account and couldn't find it. So I went to ebay adn betterworldbooks.com and it's not on there either. I can't think of anywhere else I would have bought it. But I remember it was going to be $10 plus $3 something for shipping. Maybe I started to order it and never finalized the order? IDK, but it's worrying me, because I could have sworn I ordered it.
  7. another homeschooling mom told me she heard this at a conference once, IDK who originally said it or how exactly it was worded, but Don't worry. God has a plan for your children, and nothing you do can interfere with His plans

I'm really excited about this year, I think it's going to go great!
  9. Thanks! I'll look for those next week at the library.
  10. Someone else may have a better answer for you because we have this problem too, but I think it's OK to use 'cheats'. She'll stop using them when she stops needing them.
  11. Thought doing botany over the summer would be fun. Are their any good free resources out there on the internet, or do you know of any library books we should check out? Thanks! :001_smile:
  12. Oh, I wouldn't have thought to look at the library's website! Thanks!
  13. Hi, I'm thinking about getting an mp3 player, and I have a question. Can I put poetry and stories (things I want my kids to learn) on it, for them to listen to? Just curious, because I know I've seen different things like books that have mp3 files. So if I, where would I look at filling it up?
  14. It's fine with me that she want s to read all this, I think it's great! It just makes lesson planning a little inconvienent for me:tongue_smilie: She just doesn't want to do the same things over and over, and I can understand that. it would be like me having to watch the same episode of SpongeBob over and over and over :glare:  I'll just have to get creative and find a way to keep it fresh for her.
  15. She's got a honking huge fine on her library card that I have to scrape up the money to pay. (We were packing up books a couple months before we were to move, and a couple library books accidentally got packed up-- took us forever to find them) But as soon as I get that taken care of we'll load her down with books again. I hadn't thought of putting her on the library's online catalog. She could find books to read on whatever subject we're talkingabout and that would give her some fresh material even if it is the same subject. :D
  16. I have a 9yo who reads avidly. Every year I order a whole bunch of books that I plan to use through out the school year, but when they come in she reads them all at once. And when it's time to use them for school work she's like, "this is boring! I've already done this." This year I've tried to keep them put up, but she got the the Usborne history of the world before I did and has been reading it. So when I get ready to do history she'll say but mom! I already know who the Assyrians were!
  17. I'm just lurking on here, because I'm going to need suggestions for us here soon, too. But this is making me think about my Grandma. She only went to school thru the 8th grade, but she learned a lot in those 8 years that I never learned in my 13 years of school. When I was little she would see a picture of a cat and say how much she loved cats. Then she would say Kitty Puss, Kitty Puss Where have you been? I've been to London to see the Queen. Kitty Puss, Kitty Puss, What did you do there? I frightened a mouse Out from under her chair. And she would usually have some sort of story to tell too, something about cats from her childhood or something like thatl The every once in a while she would see some thing that would remind her of The Village Blacksmith, and she would say 'Under the spreading chestnut tree, the village smithy stands...' The only poems I ever memorized (and I don't mean remembered long enough to be able to recite them, I actually learned these) were the ones that she would quote based on our daily encounters.
  18. Oh, we got a bunch of new books in the mail today! It's so exciting! Pathways Phonics English for the Thoughtful Child School Song Latin Trail Guide to Geograpy More Mudpies to Magnets Creative Play for your Toddler
  19. Don't forget storytime for preschoolers at the library. Also they a lot of times have book clubs for older kids and homeschoolers. Our library also has a 'lunch with the author' day for adults, I don't remember if it's weekly or monthly. But anyhow it's a time when people get to show off their literary works. What about Head Start? Recipes for play doh or instructions for making simple waldorf style toys (out of sticks, how cheap is that?) or a nature table as well as nature walks. Show people how to use the library to put together their own curriculum if they can't buy one. Maybe have some info on unschooling-- no curric necessary, get your education in the school of life. X-mas presents are a great idea (who ever it was that said that). Kids have enough toys, but they always need art supples, paper and pencils, or a new backpack. Do you have a local university that offers any sort of free summer classes to elementary, jr or sr high students?
  20. :iagree: :iagree: :iagree: I didn't see Jamie as being abusive, I saw him as doing what he had to do as a leader and to protect Claire from herself. And these books aren't intended to be romance in the 'boy meets girl and they live happily ever after' sence. It's two people and how they manage to build a relationship that last a lifetime despite extaordinary circumstance.
