  1. I vote for an electric razor too. That's what my mom starte me with, she was worried about me using a razor. My hair is dark and thick, and chemical removers never worked at all.
  2. My dd has some visual perception problems. As a general rule we work on phonics everyday, because if we don't she forgets everything. Right now she can sound out small words, recognizes a few sight words, but has no fluency at all. She has to sound out each and every sound, and then figure out the word. And no comprehension of what she has read.I know that she needs practice to help with this, but she can only read for a minute or two, then she gets dizzy, gets a headache, feels sick at her stomach. So we read a couple minutes then stop so she doesn't get sick from her headache.I've given her a couple weeks off, to take a break before we start our new school year. Monday we'll start back. I'm just feeling a little frustrated, and wish I could somehow magically fix it. ykwim?
  3. When you get ready to start sewing again, http://houseonhillroad.typepad.com/photos/twirly_skirt/ I made this one for my dd for xmas last year. It turned out really well, and was very easy to make. One thing I discovered needs to be considered when making these skirts is, you need to allow a little extra length in the back to the boody or it will hang a little too short in back. She's outgrown it now, so I'll make her a new one this year. I think I may also add a tulle underskirt to it, make it a little extra fun.
  4. They didn't say what color, to try several and see what 'pops' for her, but that red and blue are good places to start. I'll have to check WM again and see if I can find any of those folders. Thanks
  5. It has been suggested to me by several people that I get dd some sort of color filter, in red or blue, to put over her reading pages. I've been loking for a while now for something to use, and haven't had any luck finding anything. I was looking for something along the lines of dividers that are clear but red and blue. My MIL went to Office Depot- which is the biggest office supply store we have around here and they said they had never heard of such a thing. We haven't had any luck at WM or any other stores. Where could I get something to use as color filters? thanks
  6. Yes, I've been able to use other sites just fine, it's only that one. DH is more computer saavy than I, so I'll have him check out the settings tonight and see if there's something blocking htings from coming up right.
  7. When I look at the page with her conditions on it, it has buttons for 'I cannot mail this book,' 'book meets conditions,' or 'book does not meet conditions'. But I'm not seeing a pm button. I wonder tho, if I choose meets conditions, then pm her (I noticed on the other books that I can pm after I click that I can mail the book) can I go back and choose not to mail the book if it doesn't meet her standards?
  8. OK, I got them finally! It just took a really long time time LOL I had to close the window and open another one and go back to pbs to get the second book to print. That's odd. But it's done! hurray!
  9. I tried it, but couldn't open it either. Now I can't get into the site at all
  10. Thank you! I looked all over for that and missed it somehow. Now I'm trying to print wrappers for 2 other books, and keep getting a message that IE can't open this page. I may have to hand write them.
  11. HI, I have a question about pbs. I've been trying to find something on the site about the condition books must be in in order to be swapable and haven't been able to find anything on it. Today someone requested one of my books, and wanted a book that did not have smoke smell and was in good condition not worn or old. She says to pm her if there are any questions about it. I don't see a pm button anywhere on the request or the persons name or anything, so I don't know how to pm her. How do I do this? The book has a bend on the bottom corner of the front cover, but otherwise is like new, so I think it would be OK, but she sounds particular so I'd rather make sure first. Thanks!
  12. What do I do with the rest of the leeks? The part that is cut off. DO I throw it away? or can it be used in soup?
  13. You're right! We could put that car time to good use. Thanks for the suggestion.
  14. Does that mean the 2 inch long white part at the bottom, or does it include any of the pale green part? Because using just the white part doesn't seem like it's using very much, but then I've never cooked with leeks, so I don't know. (I don't know yet what I'm cooking, but a couple recipes I've looked at call for the white part of leeks)
  15. I'm thinking about Saturday... IDK. We're all usually exhausted by then. We're gone all day on Sunday, so that's really our only day to relax.
  16. Thanks, I'll check that website out. I'm not dead set on doing it in 3 days, it just seems to have worked out to where I may have to. And it's driving me insane figuring it out. The only other thing I can figure out is to make 2 trips to town a week, so we're not using up so much time on Mon (we have to do dr. appt on Mon). BUt I'm not sure that would accomplish anything other than wasting 2 days instead of one. I forgot about latin and spanish. Need to sqeeze those in somewhere.
  17. Or not try anything on Mon at all. Do LA and math Tue-Thurs. Sci and hist T, TH and music/art Wed, Fri. Oh, I wish I could rearrange Mondays. But they're stuck that way for now.
  18. I'm wondering how it would work to do music and art on monday afternoons, after tennis. Then save sci and history for friday, doing language arts and math 3 days a week. Would that give us enough time to cover everything?
  19. Kids have medicaid. We are not offered insurance thru work, and we can't afford it on our own. But we are able to go thru a program at he dr's office where we pay $12 for a visit. It only covers the visit at that office, not meds or hospital trips or anything like that. But it's better than nothing.
  20. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. dd1 (9) 4th grade LLTL orange book, WT1, Spelling workout D&E, MEP math, physics, history (early american, but will probably follow along with dd2's lessons also) music/art dd2 (8) 2nd-ish grade ;) Phonics Pathways, English for the Thoughtful Child, Spelling workout, MEP math, animal science, SOTW vol 1, music/art ds (4) starting some pk stuff. Monday mornings we take care of shopping, dr appts, library, etc. Monday afternoons from 1-3 we have tennis. DH is off Mon and Fri- this is the kids' 'daddy time,' it's the only time they get to see their daddy. It's hard to do any serious school on Friday, but we could do some light stuff. Each day the kids have chores to do in the morning, and pick up time in the afternoon. I'd like to work out their schedule to include this, and try to alternate times that I'm working with the 2 oldest, so they can read or play games with their brother in between. They can help me keep him entertained so we can get more done. But I need time to work with him alone, too. Where to begin?
  21. I don't mind washing and folding laundry so much, just the putting away part. The thing I hate most is washing dishes. I would rather scrub toilets than wash dishes. I would rather put laundry away than wash dishes. LOL
  22. My dd has a friend (9) who goes to public school. Last year this girl and her family had some personal things going on that they had to deal with, and she let her grades drop. They got her grades back up to passing, but the school failed her anyhow because they said she was not mature enough to go on to third grade. This past year she went thru second grade again, her grades were really good. But, she's had some trouble with reading and writing. She reads slowly and not at a 3rd grade level yet, and has trouble with reversals. The mom pushed the school to work with her (this school is really not good about working with students that have this kind of problem), so she was given some therapy and a little extra work. But her problems seem to be getting worse rather than better. The mom is very frustrated with the school, it just isn't going the way she wants it to. She doesn't feel like the school is doing enough to help her daughter. Last year when the dd was going to have to repeat 2nd grade, the mom thought a little about homeschooling. She asked me about it, and I took an afternoon to bring my books and things over to her house and talk about materials, hs'ing methods, laws, everything I could think of to do with hs'ing. She thought about for a couple weeks, until school started, then decided to put her back in ps. Her concerns are that her dd might learn better in a structured class, socialization, not getting into college, and the fact that, as selfish as it is (her words, not mine) she's used to having time to herself everyday and doesn't think she could handle having dd around all the time. And there is also the fact that her dd is having a hard time with reading and writing and she's afraid of what people will think of her and that the reason dd is having trouble is because she's doing a poor job of homeschooling. I gave her my thoughts on all these things. We talked off and on about it thru the school year. Now it's almost time for school to start again and she is bringing up these same things again. Whenever she talks about it I answer her concerns the best way I know how, and try to do it in a way that I'm not pushing her into homeschooling, just informing her. She's decided again that she won't homeschool this year for the same reasons. If she doesn't want to homeschool, that's fine with me I have no problem with that. But she keeps bringing it up, so I get the feeling she wants to but maybe is just a little nervous about it. So I don't know if I'm supposed to try to talk her into it, out of it, or just sit back and listen. I have no idea what she wants. WWYD?
  23. 6 is very young. Maybe give her a little more time? Then if it still concerns you have her checked for learning differences. I have a dd that is very spacey. She loves to daydream, get distracted very easily. A lot of times when reading, she has no idea what I've read to her because she was mentally somewhere else. If there are pictures in a book, she'll read the pictures instead of the words, so she only knows what the pics are telling her and not what the story is about. When I give her verbal instructions, I have to make sure she's looking straight at me. A lot of times she'll look at me while I'm talking, then when I stop I can see her 'snap out of it.' LOL Then she says Huh? and i have to tell her again. I'm somewhat like this myself, so I figure she gets it honestly. We had her hearing checked, and had her checked for auditory processing. They said she had 'kid's selective hearing.' LOL She did have some things going on with her eyes that have given her a time learning to read. But as far as not being able to tell stories back to me, that was just her being a dreamer. It's something that took time to train her mind towards, and she's getting better, especially not that we're readfing books with fewer pictures.
