  1. Cross posted. We live overseas, and have church in our second language Sunday nights. We don't have any type of Sunday School set up. We have watched videos on Sunday mornings as a family in lieu of Sunday School. We've watched through the Torch lighters most recently. We have basically watched all the cartoons out there. DS is 10, and moving past cartoons. Any suggestions on a video series we could watch through?

  3. Jacobs is what I was looking at for Algebra. It looks exactly like something DS would thrive with.
  4. The Arbor series looks amazing! Looks like it will be perfect for DS.
  5. Well then I guess I should look at it. I have just written it off as unusable without looking at it. But guess I should give it a glance. I didn't realize you can use it without the blocks.
  6. That's a good list. Most of those we have worked through with using Gattengo and the work I have created. These were my thoughts about what the purpose of pre-algebra was.
  7. Yes, that is the reason I am hesitant. I really don't feel DS need another go through of elementary arithmetic. He has a great foundation, we have worked at his speed, and he has mastered elementary arithmetic well.
  8. Gattengo has a lot more algebraic problems than HOE. We have worked through a lot with those. Gattengo has an algebra book, but it doesn't look as complete as some others I have looked through. HOE jist provided us another way to visually see problems, and we have enjoyed the word problems a lot. MUS uses blocks differently than Gattengo otherwise I would look into that, but I think it would be too confusing for the both of us to change now.
  9. I don't want to do AOPS now. Maybe later on. My DS is a language guy, and that is where the bulk of his time goes during school. That and he is a perfectionist, so I don't think AOPS would be a good fit right now. We have spent time on a lot of topics outside of arithmetic so maybe that is why I feel no real drive to do a pre-algebra year.
  10. It has been many many years, but I don't think I had a pre-algebra class. I had a regular 8th grade math class and then did Algebra 1 in 9th grade. Is pre-algebra needed? What is gained in doing a pre-algebra course? We used Miquon in k-3 grade, and have worked through Hands on Equations. We have a little more to go in HOE and fractions next year. And we have done a lot of Gattengo's math books. These have all included a lot of early algebra concepts. So maybe we really don't need to add more pre-algebra.
  11. English: Rod and Staff 5 skipping the writing lessons Writing: Writing Strands 4, copywork, and dictation Spelling: Rod and Staff 5 Reading: CLE 6, and Memoria Press guides for a few books Math: still thinking through this, I have mostly made my own program borrowing from programs. I think I might just continue doing this. We will finish Hands in Equations and fractions next year. We have Zaccaro books, we will finish over the summer. History: Veritas Press doing it ourselves Latin: Keep Going with Latin Greek: Elementary Greek 1 Geography: Trick Geography Bible: CLE 5, and homemade memory work Typing: I need to find something to teach typing skills, haven't figured that out yet. DS wants to learn coding, so I need to find something for that. Dh is going to need to take this area over as he knows that stuff and I know nothing about coding. Lots of read alouds and free reading Extras: piano lessons, art, basketball, running, chess, possibly tennis. Piano is the only thing that is year round, the rest all take turns during the year.
  12. That isn't coddling. That book isn't appropriate for high schoolers, even if doing DE. A writing prompt like that assumes everyone has had a sexual experience. Even in university that is an inappropriate writing prompt. Again, because it assumes all have had a sexual experience and are comfortable sharing that publicly. But maybe it has been too long ago I was at University and it has all changed now. I even took anthropology classes and we did a lot of looking at gender roles, nothing such as this was ever in one of my books. Sexual experiences are private. I don't even share with my closest friends. It doesn't involve anyone else other than the two consenting persons involved (exceptions obviously where violations have occurred). Parents might be overly involved in helping children with school work, projects, applications, etc. I have noticed a lot of parents not requiring children to do chores, and kids then have no clue how to cook, clean laundry and so forth. But this isn't a new trend, it has been happening since around the beginning of the 80s.
  13. Also depending on the sentence in ASL you can sign directionally. So I could say the sentence like "you said I love you to me" and point the I love you hand towards myself.
  14. Pay for family pictures. I had that done before my mom passed away, and it is still the most precious thing.
  15. Depends on how it is done. Spiderman move Rock on I love you but the person doesn't know to turn the palm side towards you
  16. Do you use all of the Keys to or just the ones for algebra? We used and loved Miquon and I have seen that many people like Keys to after Miquon. So I have looked into Keys, but haven't bought it just yet.
  17. I guess I need to take a look at their website. I didn't look close before to realize general was meant for 7th. I tend to like old school homeschool materials better than the newer stuff, but 3rd edition might fit our needs better. I just wish it wasn't so expensive!
  18. Found your previous posts about the difference. Thanks! It was helpful.
  19. Did you move on to geometry in 8th then? I'm not opposed to doing algebra earlier, I just don't want to rush through higher level math. But it would give us room to do a statistics class which I would like to do too at some point.
  20. I am planning out our 6th-8th grade math sequence. I am looking at Jacobs math. I think it looks like a good fit for DS. Who has used Mathematics a Human Endeavor? Does it take a whole year? Should we do this as our pre-algebra course? Followed by Elementary Algebra? DS likes math and is a little above average. I wouldn't say he is gifted or highly advanced when it comes to math, he is a language guy. He has a great foundation and a good understanding of math. I don't want to rush him through higher math just to get it done. So I am thinking we will do Algebra in 8th grade. But so far I only have two Jacobs books that I am looking at. So what do I need for 6th before starting A Human Endeavor?
  21. What is the difference between Apologia General science 2nd and 3rd edition? 3rd edition is a lot more expensive and seems to have added extra books. Also, is this generally an 8th grade science or do most wait until high school for this science course?
  22. With reading at that age you really just have to find books the child can read, then spend time reading. Add a few literature guides in during the year if your sister feels that is needed. Memoria Press, Veritas Press, Progney Press are a few that provide lit. guides.
  23. Does it feel choppy? That was a complaint I read about the early grades. Wondering if by middle school that is different.
  24. Has anyone used Sonlight science in middle school? I am wanting to hear some reviews. A lot of the reviews I have read are about the early elementary grades, and those were disconnected feeling from what I have read. But I haven't read much about the middle school grades. We enjoy Usborne encyclopedias so I feel like it might work well for us. Can this be student led?
