  1. Has anyone read this to their children? I'm trying to decide if I should have them read it or should I do it as a read aloud.
  2. I just ordered the first one after buying TWTM recommended Rod & Staff Lang. book for my 8th grader. No way with the religious content and old-fashioned set-up was it going to work for us. LOF does look simple but I'm hoping it gets a bit more meaty as it goes along. My son does need the basics gone over though.
  3. A lot of younger people are making that choice for those reasons. My 20 yr old son has one but rarely posts, he says no one needs to know where he is and what he is doing unless he is with those people. My 19 year old daughter recently shut hers down because she said people didn't need to know so much about her life unless they were a close friend. I have a love/hate thing with FB. Personally I am worried about privacy and that every search I do on Amazon shows up as an "ad" for me on FB. I keep it because I use it for homeschooing info and book info. I could find the same info on blogs but it's just easier. Personally I think it's great if you can stay off social media.
  4. This is on my shelf and I can't wait, I keep hearing such good things about it.
  5. Just finished Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult about an hour ago and starting One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey.
  6. I only have two teenagers left, both love to stay up late, as do I. By the time they get up and going it's time to eat lunch or close to it, so I wait until they've eaten to start school. On a really good day it may be 11, but more likely it's around noon. I enjoy the time to read before we have to get going. We school until around 4-5PM depending on what we're doing. It works for us. We've never been early risers, but now that it's just my last two we are even more relaxed.
  7. Parallel Journeys and The Book Thief, but we are studying WWII. A general read aloud that we really enjoyed? Coraline Narnia series Harry potter series Swallows and Amazons Homesick: My Own Story (a favorite) Bridge to Terabithia The Hobbit Rascal Johnny Tremain
  8. Some changes I'm hoping to make are: DD 15 will begin course in Japanese Both will start an online Astrobiology course More writing In general being more productive Have them cook more on their own
  9. We are still using a literature approach, even though we have moved away from Sonlight. Story of the World, have used it with all the children, all 4 books along with activity guides. We always used Explode the Code for pre-school up through 3rd-4th grade. The Charlotte Mason way of nature study.
  10. Sonlight, probably Core 3 or 4. Horizons or Saxon for math, we switched to Saxon for the 54 level. Lots of nature studies and hikes, kept a nature journal. I was reading A Charlotte Mason Companion with some homeschool mom friends and learning about the method around that time.
  11. I got a 10. I'm very introverted. I can make conversation, but it wears me out and I'd rather not be around others outside my family.
  12. I'm currently reading The Book Thief aloud to my teens. Nothing bad in it except that it is sad. Also language. My dh walked through while I was reading it yesterday and heard me say ***hole and he looked at me shocked. I told him I'm not editing the words out at their age (14 and 15).
  13. I am definitely not into it. I'm still trying to slog my way through. Not sure if I will give up or not. It's one of those books I have to make myself pick up and read.
  14. That one is sitting on my shelf, I can't wait to read it
  15. I started The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery last night. Not sure if I like it or not yet. I'm around page 50. I bought it because it was mentioned in Tolstoy and the Purple Chair by Nina Sankovitch, which I read a year and a half ago and am currently rereading.
  16. Has anyone used these and do you/your student like them? I'm thinking of buying the A Christmas Carol one. Thanks!
  17. Yes, I just realized this is an old thread, I didn't read all 11 pages so I wasn't aware there was already a conclusion. Sorry!
  18. I feel like it's not your business unless the children are being truly neglected. My youngest two were basically unschooled until they were older, I just couldn't juggle formal school for all of them. They're perfectly fine now. As for the older one not reading well, my youngest son didn't start reading well until he was 12 or so and it wasn't because we weren't working on it. He has dyslexia and reading was hard work for him. If you want to help them, I would try to be a good friend to the mom and maybe you could encourage her or suggest some easy, educational things the younger children can do. If there is a homeschool atmostphere children will learn. My little two learned a lot without formal education. They were playing, being creative, listening in on our read-alouds, watching educational TV, nature studies and more. Also, you don't know what's going on when you're not around. Maybe she is overwhelmed when she says she isn't doing anything with them. I felt like that also, but in fact my children were still learning and things were being done, I just felt like I wasn't doing anything because it wasn't a curricuculum. I would give her the benefit of the doubt.
  19. Not at all, thank you so much for taking the time, it is a great list!
  20. Thank you for the ideas, I just ordered Reading Strands for a start. I haven't taught my dd really anything about lit. analysis so I'm looking for a good beginner guide. I actually have Teaching the Classics I think, I'll go find it on my shelves. Thanks again!
  21. I haven't been following but I've read 104 books so far this year and am currently reading You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz. It has quite a good story to it, not what I expected. I'm on Goodreads and if anyone reads a lot of comtemporary fiction I'd love to add some new friends :001_smile:
  22. I am, I still have the last week to finish and am looking forward to part 2 in April. I plan on buying Pioneer Girl but I'm waiting to see if the price would drop a bit. I think it's at $25 right now on Amazon.
  23. I'm looking for something like Any Novel novel study, but I've heard some mixed reviews. Besides using individual book guides like Progeny Press or Total Language Plus is there anything out there that will work for any book? Thanks!
