  1. I agree with PPs that it is important to understand the concept of multiplication well. In my opinion, it is advantageous to give them time to really think about multiplication, use manipulatives, etc before any memorization is required. DD6 has been "doing" simple multiplication for about 9 months but I haven't expected any memorization and will not for another year at least. Multiplication can be modeled in so many ways. It can be used to find area, determine combinations, make sets, make arrays. I like to teach it first as repeated addition and then as counting objects in an array and then as finding area. There were some good threads on it, just search for "teach multiplication" I like to show geometrically that multiplication tells you how big a rectangle is. From there, you can let your child discover the commutative property of multiplication. If you make the rectangle out of rows of dots, you can ask how many different ways to express the number of dots. For example, take a rectangle of 24 dots. You can circle 6 groups of 4 (6x4) or 2 groups of 12 (2x12) or 8 groups or 3(8x3), etc to allow them to start thinking of factors. Once DD has a solid understanding, we are going to start filling a huge number chart together. http://letsplaymath.net/2011/09/06/how-to-conquer-the-times-table-part-2 I know that skip counting is a popular way to learn but I am not a fan of using it to learn times tables. I have noticed that kids who have spent a lot of time skip counting can do it VERY fast, rely on it too much, and make errors by miscounting how many skips. A great reason to memorize a multiplication fact is because it takes too long to compute it, but skip counters can skip count so quickly that they continue to do so. Just my two cents. Good luck, OP!
  2. I read these as a child in the 80's and I loved that they were set in a different era. At least the first few books- the later books seemed much more modern, actually. The Louis Darling illustrations really captured the time for me. I am reading them to 6 yo DD and she is howling with laughter over Ramona's antics and empathizing with her confusion at school (Ramona is told to "sit for the present" and she sits...and sits...). Ramona is far from perfect and that's what makes her so endearing and relatable. I have been looking forward to reading these aloud and they haven't disappointed!
  3. There is an option to follow a thread. If you are on a mobile site, you have to go to the full view to see it. It's at the upper right corner. You can view all the threads you follow under your profile, I believe.
  4. Under the enroll button, there is a hyperlink "Choose another school". You can enter zip codes to choose a region. So far, NC (28303) is offering it for $70. Anybody know of a cheaper option? ETA: I didn't realize this thread was so old! But while I'm here... Has anyone taken this class?
  5. Try the Zoom app. It allows for you to put up your own materials as well as videoconference.
  6. I just purchased the simplified version. Mainland China uses simplified characters, while Taiwan and Hong Kong uses traditional characters. Most mandarin programs in the U.S. use simplified. Hope that helps.
  7. 8. The Edge Chronicles? ETA, I linked to Far Flung Adventures instead- I believe it has more illustrations than The Edge Chronicles. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0385751125?vs=1#mediaMatrix_secondary_view_div_1435625496729 Avi's upcoming book is billed as a graphic novel http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1442499214/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1435626324&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=avi+old&dpPl=1&dpID=51g9z9wf3WL&ref=plSrch Also, I have seen illustrated versions of Michael Morpurgo's novels but I can't find them right now.
  9. Try to look for a used copy on Amazon or abebooks with reasonable shipping. For example http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=16000705144&searchurl=kn%3D1934124400%26sts%3Dt%26ds%3D20 ships to Belgium for 13USD
  10. Ask this site if they can order for you. Where are you in Europe? http://www.ukmt.org.uk/publications/index.php?type=Yearbook
  11. This is a great book. http://www.amazon.com/It-Takes-Two-Talk-Practical/dp/0921145195 Unfortunately, it is very expensive but perhaps your library has a copy you can borrow. There are so many factors in speech delay. One activity you can work on is making sure your child has good receptive skills. Following multi step directions (pick up the red ball and place it in the purple basket) and modeling a lot of expressive language yourself (I am putting the dishes in the dishwasher. I put the big plates first, etc) are helpful. Good luck! If you think she may have any other area of delay, could your ped get her in any faster off the wait list?
  12. Despite the popularity of the name "Gray's Anatomy", the atlas of choice in medical schools is Netter's. Mine still smells like formaldehyde. http://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Human-Anatomy-Interactive-Ancillaries/dp/1455704180
  13. Desertflower, I am really interested to hear how it goes!! I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old and so we are in the same age range. I have looked at the math circles book you linked and am planning to use geoboards, paper folding, activities from nrich.org, peggy kayes' books, and some mep material. Please do let me know what you had to consider when forming the circle. Best of luck!!! Can I PM you for more info? I am so excited to find someone who has started one.
  14. This is the thread I was looking for! http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/195924-logic/?do=findComment&comment=1882178 Desertflower, I saw an old post of yours that I had bookmarked about starting a math circle. Did you ever go forward with that? If so, how did it go? I am thinking of starting one as well.
  15. This is in my Amazon basket http://www.amazon.com/Visual-Discrimination-Grades-2-8/dp/1583240039/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_y Also critical thinking company has a math analogies book that we have used.
  16. We like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0866514716/ref=pd_aw_fbt_14img_2?refRID=15BNGD53G5WJ8PPDRGF6 It doesn't have much in the way of practice in computation, but it has a lot of spatial and logic skill development.
  17. We use Miquon, Singapore IP and CWP, and a hodgepodge of other sources such as MEP and nrich for math. For logic, we use Mindbenders, Critical Thinking Skills, and Math Analogies. We use read alouds such as A Little History of the World and Mathematicians are People Too for history. We also select copy work from read alouds. It sounds like a lot but we don't do more than 30-40 min a day. We have a lot of extracurriculars to fit in as well!
  18. Of course. It's a good reminder that vintage texts have their own set of problems.
  19. Arliemama, have you looked through the entirety of the first resource you listed? It seems quite dated and woefully inaccurate in its descriptions. This is what is says about Japan 3. Most of the people in the East are very backward. They have stood still while the people of the West have gone forward. Not so the Japs. They have learnt everything that the West can teach them. You will see in Japan all the things on which we pride ourselves. And about China 2. Girls, however, are not welcome. Sometimes they are called "Not-wanted" or "Ought-to-have-been-a-boy." 3. All round this city of Canton there is a high wall. From the wall the city seems to be a beautiful place. When, however, you enter it, you soon find that it is dirty and full of foul smells. ETA: I just read through the last few chapters on "The Red Men", "Eskimos" and African Americans and it does not improve. I won't quote from those sections.
  20. Try http://www.msbrownsclass.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/mathmanipulatives.pdf It also has a lot of other printable resources such as dot grids and play money
  21. If I never read The Very Hungry Caterpillar again I won't complain. I am happy to read any of the following over and over - Lost and Found - Chugga Chugga Choo Choo - My First Book of Sushi - Yum Yum Dim Sum - Bear Snores On - Tabby McTat - The Giant Jam Sandwich - Elephant and Piggy books Luckily the second list is longer! Probably because I've gotten rid of all the picture books l don't like to read aloud...
  22. Thank you for the suggestion! I am Christian but prefer secular texts. I found several at the library today from the thread above so I think we are on our way!
  23. Hi visitor, Perhaps your should start a new topic to get more responses. I will follow along because whether it was intended or not, this thread has made me curious about Minecraft myself!
  24. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good intro to botany book for a first grader? We have little botany sections in other books but I want a dedicated book to explain and illustrate the basics. TIA! ETA: We are reading Vicious Veg from the Horrible Science series at the moment. ETA2: just found this thread, question answered http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/71796-which-book-for-first-grade-botany-studies/
  25. I posted on the site news board that we might have a separate book sub forum since so many of us are interested in these lists - if you agree, please post here! http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/551953-separate-book-subforum/?hl=read+aloud ------ Here are some past threads with similar lists of read alouds http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/549427-best-read-aloud-chapter-books-for-kindergarten-or-other-read-alouds/?hl=+kindergarten%20+read%20+aloud http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/536862-talk-to-me-about-read-alouds/?hl=kindergarten+read+aloud&do=findComment&comment=6088344 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/552632-favorite-hidden-gem-read-alouds-for-k-3/?hl=%2Bhidden+%2Bgem+%2Bread+%2Baloud http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/551128-top-3-read-alouds/?hl=read+aloud&do=findComment&comment=6350812 http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/545232-what-are-the-read-alouds-that-you-want-everyone-to-hear/?hl=read+aloud&do=findComment&comment=6241223
