  1. Thank you for posting this. I know a family who lost a child this way. I won't describe their exact circumstances, but it was one of those "swiss cheese" incidents. No one who knew this family ever believed that it was anything but a horrible life-altering mistake. Even though I couldn't fathom forgetting my child in a carseat, I am forced by the empirical evidence to believe that it could happen to me too. How can I say that I would never do this when plenty of people like me have? This is also worth some thought. http://www.salon.com/2014/06/03/the_day_i_left_my_son_in_the_car/
  2. Winter Wonderland, what did you think about the teacher's curriculum suggestion?
  3. Oh my. I suspected this might be the case. Pink and Green, I can hardly believe that a teacher would begrudge a parent trying to help their struggling son! Does anyone else afterschool in your child's class? Perhaps in places where nobody afterschools, the teachers are less understanding.
  4. Hi everyone, Just wondering, do you discuss afterschooling with your child's teachers? I would hope that they are happy to have involved parents but I also suspect that some of them would rather parents leave the formal teaching to them. I hope that it's obvious I am working with DD at home and I want her teachers to know that if she grasps a concept more quickly than her peers it is because she has worked on it, not that she is any kind of genius. It's a weird area, isn't it, doing afterschooling. In my case, I really like DD's school and think the teachers are great, but I just enjoy teaching her too! Have you run into awkward situations with teachers? If so, how did you and they handle it?
  5. SKL, thank you very much. For now, I will continue with number bonds and save the 2+2 book for later if needed. I'm sure I will be posting later once the school year starts, should I have any more questions.
  6. The Giant Jam Sandwich, The Circus Ship, anything by Julia Donaldson, The Tiger who Came to Tea, anything by Oliver Jeffers, The Red Book, Richard Scarry, Knuffle Bunny, anything by Kevin Henkes
  7. Just So Stories, Tumtum and Nutmeg, The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark, Thornton Burgess, Teddy Robinson, Milly Molly Mandy, Catwings
  8. It sounds as though teacher presentation is very crucial to this curriculum. I have ordered a used teacher's manual (just A so far as B seems to be 3x more expensive!). SKL and OneStep, thank you for your candid thoughts. I love math myself; I only hope I like this "new math" as well!
  9. I took a look at 2+2=\= 5. I am a little wary of learning too many "tricks" at this age for fear they do not have solid grounding beneath them. Is this fear unnecessary? I am using number bonds or number families to teach relationships. Is this book similar?
  10. Thank you, OneStep. I think I will go ahead and get the teacher's manual and continue with the games and activities. I like the idea of creating a broader scope of understanding by looking ahead and also tailoring what we do at home to the lesson plan. I don't see the extra practice or enhancement books for K- perhaps they are just for the upper levels? Many thanks to all the replies!
  11. And what is 2+2=\=5? For a newcomer, there are so many terms to learn here!
  12. Thank you for the replies! DD will be starting K next year. We do games from Peggy Kaye's Games for Math and Games for Learning and we play a lot of board games. Your other suggestions are great. For the parents whose children use MIF, other than the smaller emphasis on math facts, what else do you like or dislike about the curriculum?
  13. Hello! I am new here and I am looking for a curriculum to supplement DD(5) for the summer and school year. Her school uses Math in Focus. I have read about the curriculum, but haven't a clue about what would best complement it. Has anyone supplemented MIF? Thank you!
