  1. I feel your pain. I signed my daughter up for OSU Spanish III for next year in March (yep, last month) and bought the book. They accepted my registration and my money. My daughter talks to the teacher every week without fail. If not for your post, I still would not know that the entire program had been cancelled. Both the teacher and the administrator said it was not their problem and didn't offer any information on possible other Spanish courses. When confronted about the information, the teacher told my daughter that she didn't need to speak to her again because my dd had basically finished Spanish II. My dd cried. Keep in mind this is a woman that my daughter talked to weekly from September to April for two years. They did refund my money but, wow, what an ugly way to end the program.
  2. Moving --again and again. It helped me focus on what mattered educationally and what could be saved for later. I learned that I could not "wing" lessons; I need to be prepared in order to teach the material -- by reading ahead, doing the math problems, or jotting down discussion questions and answers beforehand. I also learned the soul-saving grace of downtime and that little girls sometimes need a mother more than a teacher.
  3. I have read two editions of the book several times. I started lurking on the old Boards and fell in love with the forum. I loved the Draconians, those great women who taught me it was okay to strive towards excellence. I miss them and their advice very much. They made me a better teacher. I wish I could shake their hands and tell them that. I still read the Board because of the people here that keep my dream of academic excellence going. Whenever I am afraid or lost or feeling uninspired, a post by someone I admire helps me put the teaching armor back on and get back into the fight. I can't name you all but each of you makes a difference in my life and my school. Please keep posting.
  4. Thanks very much for your reply. The money for camp is a stretch for us, but I think it will be worth it.
  5. Here's ours: Rhetoric, Analysis, & Composition Precalculus (Foerster) Chemistry II with Lab Physics I with Lab World History I Spanish 3 Engineering Design Javascript/Java Programming PE Civil Air Patrol
  6. Congratulations to all of you! I am so glad it turned out so well!
  7. I actually use power point slides (we use Macs, so Keynote slides). They are really easy to put together and easy to change. If you have access to the teacher materials with the textbooks you use, you can get instructor slides and modify them to meet your needs.
  8. I'm doing school, all day it seems sometimes. I teach American Lit II, Algebra II, Biology II (with lab), Chemistry I (with lab), U.S. History II, and Drawing I. The only classes I don't teach are web design and Spanish. Next year, is more of the same, except I will not be teaching computer programming or Spanish. We have tried all kinds of online classes and I've found the majority of them to be disappointing. Next summer, depending on where we are, I hope dd can DE. My "this is too cool moment" -- watching my dd do a symbolic portrait of an American author. It was a real insight into the way she thinks. Watching her explain matrices to the dog was pretty funny too.
  9. Thank you very much, Dr. Northcoast. I appreciate your insight. It gives me a lot to think about. She has an opportunity to do the Bucknell engineering camp this summer. Perhaps that will help her decide on a path. Teacher Mom
  10. I'm trying to research engineering departments with my daughter and I would appreciate help. Besides the USNews rankings, where should I go to research Bucknell or any other engineering school? What specific questions should I ask to locate a good engineering school? I know that answer depends on what type of engineer she wants to be, but right now she is interested in chemical, biomedical, bioengineering, and computer engineering. She has shadowed several different types of engineers, interviewed several women in engineering, and does understand what they do. We are just starting the process, so use small words when explaining the college process. We basically have 1.5 years before she starts the application process. Thank you, Teacher Mom
  11. We lost 2 days for Doggie Diarrhea Day and Return of Doggie Diarrhea Day.
  12. My sister asked me this question and I don't know the answer. If your 15 year old sophomore received a 32-36 on the ACT, will the colleges accept it for admissions or would the student have to take it again? The student does not want to take the test again, if that makes a difference. Thanks, Teacher Mom
  13. Sorry, mixup is my fault. I thought DE meant dual enrollment. Thanks everyone for the different perspectives. I appreciate the help.
  14. Is it better (for DE purposes) to take an online class at a state university or to take a campus-based class at a community college? Would potential colleges look at one more favorable than the other? Thank you, Teacher Mom
  15. The Grapes of Wraith by Steinbeck and Independent Study by Joelle Charbonneau (The Testing, Book2)
  16. Black eyed pea Jambalaya with andouille sausage and ham, southwest corn, creamed cabbage, biscuits, and blueberry cobbler here. I grew up in the Great State of Louisiana but am very far away in the Midwest now! My family always ate cabbage, not collard greens, for New Year.
  17. I can only tell you what happen to me. My hairdresser used Aveda products in my hair, which was very, very dark. We were trying to let some gray come in gradually and using foils. After years of coloring my hair, I starting having little rashes on my hairline. One day at the salon, I had a dramatic reaction, literally a reaction so bad it was like 3rd degree burns to my neck, ears, and upper back. The chemicals were on my hair less than ten minutes before she washed it all out. I had to go to the doctor for medication. My doctor told me the next reaction could put me into the hospital. I went gray from that day on. It took me about a year to adjust but now I don't think about it.
  18. I've tried different fonts and different designs and finally created a combination year and subject transcript that I really like. It is, however, two pages long. Is that okay or do I go back to the drawing board? Thanks, Teacher Mom

    ..

4x6 index cards from my 4-year-old neighbor. When she was really sick with the flu, I would put a hand-drawn Snoopy card in the mailbox everyday for her. She wanted to make sure Snoopy could still have "ventures"! She is such a sweet little girl.
  20. She interested in going anywhere, public or private, where she will not get "lost" in the crowd. She would love a place that does undergraduate research. We have gone to a few large universities to visit and she does not think she will be happy at one.
  21. Actually, I am trying to just get a list started. This is my first (and only) child going to college and I'm lost. She would like anything from Maryland to Texas, so South to Southeast.
  22. Does anyone have any recommendations for small/medium-sized universities noted for Science/ Technology? My daughter's current interests are biomedical engineering/technology and computer science/ cybersecurity. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Teacher Mom
