  1. 0) What did you use for Pre-algebra? 1) How is the course run? Any videos? Does the student just read the textbook? Do you teach the material on a whiteboard? 2) Does the student think he understands the material? Maybe interactive whiteboard sessions are needed to get started on a new topic. Do not rush through Algebra 1 - big mistake. It needs to be solid!
  2. https://www.kutasoftware.com/free.html Algebra 1 select Properties of exponents - Hard
  3. or apply the Power Rule of Exponents with parentheses around the base (which is -3 in this case) (a^m)^n = (a)^mn = (-3)^( -3 X -2) = (-3)^6 many text books show (a^m)^n = a^mn which does not account for the sign of a so this could be confusing to students
  4. What is it called? Do you have a text book reference?
  5. M1 Lesson 3 for now - they will do the other lessons later in the course but my question is whether other HS math programs introduce this fairly formal topic along the way like Eureka does.
  6. FYI - Vectors and Matrices are covered in many Precalc courses here but without introducing Linear Transformations.
  7. My DS' HS Precalculus course (Eureka) covered Linear Transformations this week. I don't remember seeing that topic until college Linear Algebra. I have a few Precalc textbooks and none even mention it. My mother who is a retired HS math teacher (who still tutors) said she never saw it at the HS level before. Do more advanced HS math programs like AoPS or Foersters cover this topic? College Precalc courses? Just curious.
  8. America has become degree-crazy even when the job does not require it. Many students think that the online classes will be easier then they actually turn out to be. The for-profit college TV commercials help foster this myth. In the end, the course has to have some meaningful measures to earn college credit.
  9. Legal links can be found: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/540313-homeschool-high-school-physics/ look for Hewitt the book itself is not free suggest purchasing an older edition at a reasonable price
  10. I went through the online Science class demo - I was not particularly impressed for the tuition they charge.
  11. Spending a lot on books for someone who does not seem to care does not seem like money well spent. I would try to dialog with him to understand what he possibly wants to do in the future and somehow relate that to his studies. Fifteen is a tough age for boys.
  12. Can you take Derek Owens or other such providers for the home-school component of the charter? If so then this is a very good charter model. In AZ it is all or nothing 1) regular public school taking all classes there* 2) B & M charter public taking all classes there* 3) virtual charter public taking all classes there * some schools allow community college courses for a Junior or Senior that has exhausted school offerings such as math (but you pay for most) I would have loved to outsource a few critical math and science classes
  13. proctored tests were at the college testing center I think remote students - over 50 miles had to make their own arrangements
  14. stumbled on National University Virtual High School (NUVHS) while googling a specific advanced Precalc topic I don't remember it being discussed here. http://www.nuvhs.org/Admissions/FAQ.html "Tuition ranges from $295 to $375 per course depending on the format. for a 16 week semester All NUVHS courses are equivalent to a semester-length high school class but can be completed in an accelerated format. " price seems to include ebook format text
  15. Do CA umbrella charters count as a "California Public School"? If so Scout may be free?? " If you are a California Public School student, parent, teacher or administrator you may be eligible for free access to our courses. In order to verify your school's status with Scout, please fill out the form below. If your school is eligible, a promotional code will be emailed to you. You will be able to use this during the registration process. "
  16. My DS and his good friends are not particularly good math text book readers (but good in math) and this scares me for college.
  17. of interest: https://tip.duke.edu/independent_learning/mathematics/geometry-objectives.pdf
  18. I would use the topics covered in Derek Owens and JHCTY as a reference point: http://www.derekowens.com/course_info_precalculus.php http://cty.jhu.edu/ctyonline/courses/mathematics/precalculus.html Be sure to cover Probability and Statistics in your Algebra 2 it will be on the SAT.
  19. This is a good comment on this ranking: " Interesting, but there is also strong bias to colleges located in high cost of living areas. Aside from the Mining schools, everything in the top 40 is in California or Northeast. Grads of course can work anywhere, but a high percentage remain within the same state/region as as their college. High cost of living = high salary = perceived higher ROI. My reading to come up with true ROI would put Duke as #1 as it is in a moderate cost of living area. Next would be BYU in very cheap to live Utah. "
  20. only 5 courses per year that is not considered college prep in AZ (22 courses minimum)
  21. I would stretch out the Precalc course to the end of June or even July if possible (advantage of the 12 month subscription). This would allow completion of the other AP classes in May so less overall stress.
  22. Oh - this is an example of topic that needs to be solid by end of Algebra 2 so a Precalc class would expect this. There is lots of free material on web to review topics like these. I see now that Thinkwell does not have an Algebra 2 class on the homeschool site so maybe an Algebra 2 refresher book is needed. Good Luck
  23. Do you already have the workbook? http://www.thinkwellhomeschool.com/products/pre-calculus Derek Owens uses the Michael Sullivan Precalculus text-book. I have a 5th edition it is a good text. A Step by Step Problem Precalc Solver may help. Pre-calculus Demystified, Second Edition Pre-Calculus Problem Solver (Problem Solvers Solution Guides) Revised Edition try to borrow from your library before you buy OR http://blog.wolframalpha.com/2009/12/01/step-by-step-math/ I assume the OP has already purchased this course and would like to supplement it.
