  1. I'm eager to hear this as well. We are in HOD CTC so we will be using Resurrection to Reformation next year as well, thus astronomy. I will say - we are using their science this year and love it. (For 5th grader) In my mind, I figure we will use HOD science at least through 6th grade. In 7th, we will either beef it up or use something else entirely. But, it may be good enough to continue into the years after. I just don't know. So that probably doesn't help, but I wanted to chime in that we enjoy the science in CTC and my DD is retaining so much!
  2. We read TONS of whole books at our house. And in their free time, they read even more. But, we also do CLE reading program 3rd grade and up to introduce some of the things you are talking about. I'm thinking at some point we will switch to perhaps some teaching the classics online classes or so excellence in literature, but we will likely do cle through 6th or 7th.
  3. The Sonlight 2 volume books is what I was speaking of and we loved them!
  4. My kids have enjoyed the animal ark and pony pals series - neither of which I think are remarkable literature but they are fun and they read nonstop when we get them from the library. They also like Circle C books - there are different levels - I think 2 sets for girls based on age. They love those too!!! We have tons of other favorites but those are all about animals!
  5. I can't compare them to the other books you are talking about, but I really enjoyed the Landmark books. So much so that when I sold Core D, I really didn't want to part with those. They kept my 3rd graders attention and mine as well 😀
  6. Interesting. I suppose there will be a placement test of some sort via Derek's site that will show me after CLE 6 if she's actually ready for pre-algebra? We aren't 100% sure we will use his class but I just know I will need something that provides instruction. Math isn't my strong area 😀
  7. Hmm......interesting. I suppose we could do that as well.
  8. Hi Ladies, I am hopeful that my now 5th grade daughter can do Derek Owen's Pre-Algebra class in 7th grade. Obviously, if she isn't ready, she isn't. So I'm not going to rush her. But I would love to do Algebra in 8th. So.........we are currently using CLE 5. My thought is that we would complete CLE 6 and attempt to complete as much of CLE 7 as we can prior to 7th grade and start his class then. Does this sound like a good plan? Does it make sense to try to complete the 7th grade text to be well equipped for pre-algebra in 7th grade? Thanks! Poppy
  9. Hi ladies I am trying to select a spelling program for a 6th grader. I want a program with vocabulary and roots included. I have heard Rod and Staff has a great program and includes both of these areas in addition to spelling. I've also just realized that Abeka does as well. (And also includes poetry) Can anyone compare the two of these? Thanks!
  10. My 5th grade daughter is enjoying Adventures in Writing with The Potter's School. My understanding from friends is that their high school classes are excellent as well!
  11. A friend of mine is using this and I'm planning to give it a go maybe next semester. Here's the link. It's called "The Ology." http://stores.newgrowthpress.com/search.php?search_query=the+ology
  12. Hi Ladies, We are considering going to Medishare for our health "insurance." My husband asked me to post on here and see if any of you lovely ladies can share any CONS and reasons NOT to do this - from experience or close relationships with anyone who has had a bad experience. Thanks!
  13. Sadly, i finally had to admit that my 2nd grade dd and I are not enjoying Trail Guide Paths of Exploration at all. For 2 months I've tried to make it work but it just isn't. We are going to continue reading some of the books I think, but she actually wants to do a social studies workbook type curriculum for awhile! (Gasp!!!) So I ordered something yesterday and hope it works, alongside reading good books.
  14. Hi ladies! As the leaves begin to change colors and the temperature begins to drop, I want nothing more than to add lots of good read alouds to my schedule and cuddle up with my kids and read away. I remember a few years ago reading Understood Betsy with my them and I just cried and cried. What a great book. Then at the end of last year, we read The Chestry Oak and we all loved it. I would love recommendations for terrific books that just grab your heart and soul. (Sorry if this is sappy 😂). FYI - I have 3 girls - ages 11, 8, and 5. Any "shouldn't miss this one" books? Thanks! Poppy
  15. Thanks. Yes, I think I have seen that one before but it will be helpful to read it again. I also wanted to get thoughts from people on this forum about what they think vs just on the HOD board.
  16. Hi ladies, What are your thoughts about HOD's writing program/progression - specifically using CTC through MtM. (For us, 5th-8th) We are doing an online class now while using CTC and I really wish we weren't already. But I couldn't tell how confident I should be about the writing in HOD so I went ahead and signed my dd up for the class. It's a great class. I just tried so hard to simplify this year and this was the only thing "extra" with HOD besides morning time basket. I'm starting now to think about next semester and year. Thoughts on how HOD teaches writing? Thanks!
  17. I'm not much help in terms of whether it will be easier to write your own, but I will say we have done LHFHG, looked extensively at Bigger and Preparing and we are doing CTC now. My take is that I won't use HOD for my younger kids until they reach CTC or perhaps Preparing. We are loving CTC. It doesn't feel like busywork for my daughter. She has said numerous times that she feels like she is learning more now than ever before because of how they present things. I am looking forward to at least 4 more years of HOD for her. Then we'll evaluate the new high school programs when we get there. Maybe it's "fluff" because they are in the wrong guide? Just a thought. But for the record, I felt like some of the younger ones felt fluffy too, hence the only using HOD from CTC and up. I hope you figure out what works best for you. If you are skipping that much of it? It truly might be better to create your own! Good luck!
  18. So is this a vote in that direction? I have never used them previously.
  19. What do you think about these two? It would be the science in resurrection to reformation for HOD or 6th grade science for bju. Bju would be distance learning with the dvd's. Thanks!
  20. Hi ladies Can someone help me out with omnibus? I'm thinking about starting a course myself just to get ahead and grasp things a little better so I can teach better. But as many times as I look over the website, I still don't truly know what I would need to do. Is it necessary to start with I? And does is only go through III for the self-paced? That's all I see. And would I do primary and secondary or choose one? Do you like one better than the other? I'm not picky on which period of history. Thanks!
  21. Help!!!! Ideas for a 2nd grade girl that wants to do science experiments (not nature study) all day long who has a mother that would rather do anything else! Suggestions? Thanks!
