  1. After I posted this, I started looking at some pictures of celebrities. A lot of those had the "choke hold" you described. That would not fly with me. lol I'd just push him off. So, I agree. That is more than likely what she was referencing.
  2. http://www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/celebrity-news/helen-mirren-blasts-men-who-put-their-arms-around-their-girlfriends-as-it-looks-like-ownership-a2946946.html?cmpid=facebook I personally like when my husband puts his arm around me, but apparently that means he owns me. I wonder what she thinks about wedding rings. ;) ETA: I like Helen Mirren. I just dislike blanket statements of assumption concerning every relationship.
  3. Thanks, Chelli! I'll have to browse the read aloud lists tomorrow. :)
  4. The school I attended was a very strict Christian school. Dresses/skirts only for the girls and eventually, only A-line or full skirts. No straight skirts due to them getting continually tighter and tighter. Finding clothes was HORRIBLE. We begged each year for uniforms, but they kept saying "We don't want you to lose your individuality." At that point, we all felt we looked like we belonged with a Gothard/ATI group. We were so willing to give up "individuality"...which really was "dress frumpy so you don't cause the boys to think lustful thoughts." (I digress.) Anyway, to this day, I avoid dresses and skirts like the plague. I can not stand to have them on. Of course, by the time my little sister was in high school, they had moved to uniforms and all the kids griped about them. It was nice, though, for shopping. This dress code though is a bit ridiculous. :/
  5. You're right. Nothing wrong with it...except she DOES sit for multiple books. lol She was just mad at me because I was trying to distract her from an epic melt down over not getting cake. (She's had multiple breathing treatments this weekend and they always cause major emotional turmoil.) She never leaves me questioning what she wants to do though. ;) I have been thinking of getting books on tape to listen to when we go to church. It's an hour away, so plenty of time for a story.
  6. So, I picked up her new picture books from the library this afternoon. I got through one book (Toot and Puddle) and was going to move on to another book, but what was her response? "Yeah, Mom, I fink we are all done wif da books now. You tan put dem away now." She's nothing if not opinionated. :001_rolleyes:
  7. We are an hour from church. On our volunteer worker weeks (every other week), we tend to eat out just because it's usually 1:00 by the time we're done and then it's 2-2:30 by the time we get home. On our non-worker weeks, we have leftovers or something from the crockpot. As someone suggested, put the ingredients in the crockpot on Saturday night, then pop it onto the base and turn it on before you leave.
  8. This is what I would do. Even recent presentations I have been to have had women in dresses and shrugs or jackets. With her age, that attire would be perfectly acceptable, imho.
  9. I have never heard of My Father's Dragon, but so many of you are suggesting it that I think I need to look for it or at least make a note to get it when she's older. :)
  10. I have some Frog and Toad. I wonder if she'd like them, especially since they are short stories. :) I may dig those out of storage tonight. Ok, so most of you started when I was thinking it would be more appropriate. Dd is almost 3.5, but has only just recently really allowed us to read multiple books at a time to her. We have so many picture books (some pure twaddle, but others are really good). So, we are definitely going to keep reading picture books. I don't think she's going to be ready for chapter books for awhile yet. Glad to see that most were where I was originally thinking.
  11. And sorry for all the different quotes. My phone isn't letting me multi-quote.
  12. Oh, definitely not! No giving up here. Some of the best books are picture books! The first time I read The Little House, I was in college in a children's lit class. I still love picture books. :)
  13. She does like pictures a lot, so I did place a hold on several of the recommended picture books (The Little House, The Poky Little Puppy, etc) I was just surprised to see the chapter books listed. She may surprise me though and enjoy the chapter book. If not, we can always continue with longer picture books. :)
  14. I was looking on Simply Charlotte Mason for some preschool read aloud suggestions and they had the Laura Ingalls Wilder books and Jeremy: The Tale of an Honest Bunny listed under the chapter book suggestions. I can not see my 3 year old maintaining an interest in a chapter book, but maybe I'm underestimating her. I did place a hold on Jeremy. She likes The Velveteen Rabbit, so maybe she will like this. When did you start having your preschooler listen to chapter books? Am I just expecting too little of her or do you think that chapter books this young are a stretch? (Obviously, I won't be reading multiple chapters at a time to her right now. Depending on the chapter length, I figure one chapter...MAYBE.)
  15. I've never had that experience. Sorry!
  16. Same here. She will pee, but she refuses to do the other. :/ Big hugs on that insurance junk. I sincerely hate dealing with insurance companies!
  17. I really like MAC. Can't afford it all the time, but it's been the best I've worn. Clinique was ok, too. It will cost you more, but get a primer as well. Makes for much better coverage.
  18. Off topic, but in my state, they have hardship licenses for those types of kids. They are only supposed to drive to work, school, and home.
  19. I would have an issue if my child's group decided to unanimously lie for a group of students and my participation the following year would be in question.
  20. I have stopped as well. I go on and search for what I need, but that's it anymore. I guess the plus side is that it has saved me hours of mindlessly browsing.
  21. I have always loved Evelyn. I guess I kind of have it since dd's name ends in -lyn and her middle name is Eve. Just a bit disjointed.
