  1. Not only does it not add value to your life, it actively annoys you (due to the dish washing issue). I'd donate or sell without hesitation.
  2. My rule is, no complaining to ME about what the other one is doing. Talk to each other, no tattling, mom does not mediate. I don't want to hear it unless there is a safety issue. Mine are 2 & 5 ( I do intervene if the younger is pulling the older one's hair or biting or course..... ) Got great tips on that from 'Siblings Without Rivalry’, a book I highly recommend.
  3. Perhaps the hope is that after 2 renewals, you will be more inclined to take out different books, which doesn't impact circulation rate but does increase the number of books actively used in the time period. In my town, 2 renewals is 12 weeks. For most users, educators and not, 3 months is not an unreasonable time limit. Especially because you can always check it out again.
  4. There is some value to having books on the shelves, which unlimited renewals prevents By keeping those books only available to users who request them online. Some users don't use the online system to find books, they just browse the shelves. Even those of us who do mostly request books online do love looking through the topics on the library shelves.
  5. I use ours several times a week for to make gluten free stuff for my husband, and I think it's worth it if you are on a GF diet. Otherwise, nah.
  6. New York owed him nothing. There are very very very few players who can succeed at that level, he did much better than most, he has nothing to be ashamed of.
  7. He doesn't succeed, the team, coaches and management all make less money. All the piety, posing and publicity in the world can't make up for lack of scoring.
  8. Businesses give special cards as an incentive to get you to do business there. I don't understand "I get the most use out of it, so, I should not have to pay the same fines as casual users". That's the opposite of logical. No teacher cards or homeschooler cards here in my town (MA).
  9. Why on earth would there be special privileges for homeschoolers?
  10. China executes for arson, fraud, drug smuggling, among other crimes that do not warrant execution in most parts of the world. And of course, there is reason to question murder convictions in a country known for corruption and the effectiveness of bribes.
  11. I have no confidence in morality of the Chinese justice system. It is not a country where speech is protected. It is also not a country where you are innocent until proven guilty, or where you are gauranteed a fair trial if accused (or, any trial at all). The courts are based on Soviet codes which most of us would not want to be subject to. They are an arm of the state, not a reflection of the will of the people. Saying the prisoners here were found guilty and worthy of death means something very different than it does here in the US. I also will never see the "Bodies" travelling show because those are executed prisoners, sometimes political prisoners.
  12. That poor child. I hope he pulls through, recovers, and goes on to have a good life. What trauma for the kids who witnessed it - knowing someone who attempts suicide is terrible, having to see it done as an act of violence is so much worse. I hope it goes without saying that minors, especially minors having mental health problems, should not have access to firearms.
  13. I think every kid has something where they feel they're the ONLY one who doesn't get to _______. They all survive, and may even thank you for it later. For me, it was getting my ears pierced. My mom said "Not until you're 16" and I was so crushed. I hit 16 and didn't care anymore, and now I'm kind of glad I never bothered with it.
  14. I like those, but, it would take a good 20 minutes of styling and a lot of product to make my stick straight hair do ANY of those things.
  15. Bangs are very in right now. I just got some and I love them. Both easy and chic - what's not to love? Here is a non-glam Taylor Swift shot to give you an idea of the look: http://roccosrevolution.com/2012/01/20/thats-it-its-settled-im-getting-bangs-because-of-taylor-swift/
  16. I'm sure that is true, but, that happens at a whole lot of churches too. Doesn't mean church is something to avoid.
  17. It's a volunteer and service organization, hard to turn that around to being a bad thing.
  18. If you're using an iPhone, subscribe via iTunes. That way they're on the hard drive and do not use data.
  19. I think 'spew' is a very ugly word that many people here have used, some of whom would never utter an expletive. It is meant to be derogatroy. A derogatory word? Spew? That is a new usage, for sure. Volcanoes have been spewing for centuries. Do you think the posters here were comparing people who "spew" foul language to volcanoes? I think they were using a derogatory synonym for "speak". What is the difference between that and a forbidden word? I also think the claim that the use of foul language shows a lack of imagination or limited vocabulary is a tired cliche, and betrays the same faults it claims to uncover. Disagree completely. Since the concept of "self-control" is unpopular around here, I'll substitute "self-governance". You think juding people to be unintelligent and unimaginative due to language choices show self control? The words I'd use are lazy, judgemental, smug.
  20. Tell your husband to tell her she is beautiful, more than once. It will make a difference, even if she seems to shrug it off.
  21. Right, the invitation should allow the responder to list how many, if any, are coming. If Mrs. and Mr. are invited, the invitation should not presume both will attend. Particularly if kids are not appropriate for the reception, it is always possible that one parent will stay home with the kids.
  22. I think 'and guest' is proper if you are inviting a single friend and letting them know they can bring a date. Single as in 'not in a serious relationship'. It is kind to let a friend bring a guest of their own choice, particularly if they won't know many people at the reception.

  24. I am not offended by foul language. I am more bothered by the idea that a half dozen words are forbidden for what seem to me to be arbitrary reasons. I do not think a dirty tongue makes one unintelligent. Shakespeare had both a filthy mind and a brilliant wit. But if you tell me it really bothers you, I will be careful to not swear in your presence. Simple respect is important.
