  1. I'm surprised so many people reserve books and have the librarians find them. I do that a lot, but only for books in neighboring libraries that I want to have shipped to my own library. I wouldn't do it for my own. It seems like a waste of very limited resources.
  2. I think the OP is saying that they are not alphabetized, aside from the first letter of the last name. All the As mixed together, all the Bs mixed together.....
  3. My thought was "mom posed like a model, gun in a child's hands, victim blaming caption = designed to piss off liberals".
  4. I would have used the ground instead of the table. I don't think the OP was objecting to nursing at the table, but at leaving the dirty diaper sitting there while using the table as a feeding place.
  5. I pull a 8' popup with a sedan. VERY IMPORTANT: Get a brake control if you don't have one already installed on your van.
  6. Totally true. I remember lecturing my husband against SAHMs back in the day... which he graciously doesn't remind me about, now that I am one.
  7. Not a Muslim here, and not answering on behalf of that religion, but I do have an anecdote. My Catholic priest growing up (1980s) used the phrase "salaam alaikum" at every Mass. It translates to "peace be with you". I don't know if that way of phrasing is part of the standard Mass, he was an academic priest with an interest in language and translation issues. The phrase "Peace be with you" is definitely part of standard mass. Anyway just saying that is phrase whose meaning, if not exact use, certainly bridges faiths.
  8. Having worked in a place like that, let me tell you, don't! They'll have plenty of changes for jobs that last YEARS in soul sucking sensory deprivation boxes like that!
  9. Not one worth the paper it's printed on.

    ipad

"Stop supporting" really doesn't mean much, I use my 1st gen ipad all the time, it's not an issue at all. I guess there will be new apps I won't be able to use, but, I haven't run into that yet. Apps don't take up much memory at all, just the content of itunes (songs, movies). On big trips when I really want to use all 16gb, I just don't sync every song I own. It still holds a couple movies and 8+ hours of music. So long as you have a bigger drive you connect to, I don't see think lack of lots of memory is a big deal. I certainly wouldn't pay $180 more for it.
  11. My preschooler took an eye test where they used symbols and shapes instead of letters. Dog, triangle, airplane, etc. There was a picture of an old-fashioned rotary phone and she guessed ".... spaceship?"

    ipad

I have a 16gb 1st gen ipad and it is plenty good enough for me. It's 1000000% better than no ipad, while a newer one is slightly better. So I say get the cheapest one you can find and enjoy. You do not need space on an ipad unless you want to carry loads of movies on it. I watch movies but do it streaming (netflix) so don't need space. I use mine at home only so I don't need 3g. If you want it for out and about, and especially if you don't have a smartphone, get 3g/4g for sure.
  13. Just ignore it. If you're stuck with it as your home page, just change your homepage to what you want..... in my browser, Firefox, you just drag the icon in the address bar to the "home" button on the toolbar.
  14. Huffington Post doesn't make stuff up, it is a legit news source. But like many online sites, they put out dozens of stories a day, many just bite-sized nuggets of simple storytelling, often in the hopes of generating controversy/comments. Student forced to lick desk probably got as many page views as "too complicated" stories about drones, sequestration issues, changes to the farm bill impacting SNAP, and other actually relevant and important news stories.
  15. I'm not surprised by bigotry and misinformation. But I'm surprised it's fine with the mods, and is comes from a sizable minority of posters (apparently). I thought this was a board about parents as thoughtful educators and critical thinkers.
  16. I have learned so much about this community from this thread. I'm amazed at the level of insult and condemnation that is tolerated towards gay members. It's pretty disheartening. I am sure if there's been message boards 60 years ago, we'd be hearing the exact same arguments used against integration and interracial marriage.
  17. Remember back in the days when House was very popular, when everyone was saying Hugh Laurie was the most unlikely sex symbol? They hadn't met Benedict yet! Charisma is a funny thing.
  18. How lucky for you, that you were allowed to get married.
  19. And there are a whole lot of Christians who have zero problem with it. It's not a Christian/not Christian issue at all. There are other religions which disapprove of homosexuality too. Muslims tend to be very anti-gay - not all, of course. But there are several Muslim countries where homosexuality is a crime punishable by the death penalty.
  20. It's really not that hard to keep kosher. Lots of people do it.
  21. Being gay isn't a behavior, it is an identity. You can't really "disagree" with someone's identity. That is my thinking, and why I believing calling being gay being "disordered" is the moral equivalent to using a racial slur.
  22. What part of boy scouts are gay boys not part of?
  23. I don't really want my son around people who refer to being gay as a "disordered attraction", so, I guess this change is a double win for me!
  24. I think all boy scout groups pray. I know there is an official cub scout prayer, not sure about later years. As for the Christian part, I think there is a lot of discretion on a troop-by-troop basis.
