  1. Okay, I'm curious. I get the not engaging in discussion thing and I like the thought of not giving a threat. So, if your child didn't get into the tub, would you just come up with a consequence at that time? Do you already have consequences in mind that fit the crime, so-to-speak? I like the idea of not having to give the threat initially! But, because I was put into the mode of doing the opposite, it seems like it wouldn't work. I was a parenting seminar a few years ago and the speaker said a parent should always tell the child what the consequence will be, for disobeying, upfront, when telling them what you want done. I'd really like to hear more of your thoughts, Pamela! Sheri :)
  2. Thank you for the replies. I'll look over these suggestions and am glad to know that all will be well, with her starting late. Sheri :)
  3. This isn't really a good time for me to be answering this question because as I was opening this post I was shaking my head & verbalizing, to youngest dd, about how "peeved" I was that she was using my open desk drawer as a footrest. She could not understand, as the drawer was at a downward angle, what she could possibly be doing to ruin the drawer. :banghead: argh! Sheri (who will reply to this after relaxing a bit) :) p.s. Since youngest dd is quick to feel remorseful, she quickly removed her feet/legs from the drawer, closed it, and apologized.
  4. After using Apologia for General Science, we switched to Abeka for Physical Science and dd was much happier with science this year! Sheri :)
  5. Hmm, I did not have a background in Latin and have my degree in the health care field. When I think back to the medical terminology classes I have (and look at my old textbooks) I *see* all the things that even a base knowledge of Latin would have helped. Maybe your MIL was having a bad day? Sometimes I make comments that come across as sarcastic when I'm having a bad day....well, they probably seemed sarcastic, because I was sarcastic. :tongue_smilie: Sheri :)
  6. We've enrolled in Seton's English courses, but I won't do full enrollment because I like to do science & history "TWTM way" and prefer to do other subjects different, as well. Seton is quite rigorous, which is good, but it can be overwhelming trying to finish in their time frame. I am familiar with MODG, but not enough to give any input. Have you thought of OLVS (Our Lady of Victory School)? They are also accredited. I really like their materials. I've used their L.P. for some subjects and though a couple things bugged me, overall, I was impressed with what they have. You can enroll in single subjects, just like you can with Seton. Sheri :)
  7. Okay ~ confession time: I didn't do logic with the kiddos in the early grades. Now I really want to get oldest dd going with it in high school. I have looked at the chapter in TWTM (1st edition) and I'll look again when my 'new' copy arrives. BUT, I wanted to know if anyone did anything different or how it went starting so late. Oh, I'm hoping there are a few not-so-perfect Moms who dropped the ball when it came to Logic and had to start from scratch in high school and can now pass their wisdom onto me. :D I hereby [try to] promise that my 5th & 6th graders will have an introduction to Logic in the upcoming school year. Off to the K-8 board for that discussion...... Sheri :)
  8. I just had Understanding the Scriptures in my hands, as I borrowed it from the gal who teaches O.T. at the local Catholic High School. She uses this book in the classroom. Could you tell me the 'problem' that people are encountering (i.e. you mentioned Moses). Thank you!! Sheri :)
  9. Our state requirement is 4 hours/day for 175 days. The 4 hour thing is more of a guideline, in our [area hs'ers] minds, as I don't know that it ever took that long to finish up daily work, in the early grades. We do not have to submit anything to the District with regards to attendance, but I choose to keep a record that shows the days the kids were 'in school.' We get in way more than that since our school year runs July 1- June 30. Our "light schedule" is late-April through late-August and we put in 1/4 to a 1/2 day of school, 2-3 days a week. To answer your last question: If I were asked or had to report to the School District the number of days I've done, I'd give them the actual number and let them know that our school year runs July-June. Sheri :)
  10. Wow, I have a lot to learn about this place. Sheri :)
  11. Well, right now, dead grass and dirt. 9 years ago we put it on nice, thick grass but it's all worn away now. Of course, the last few years have been drought-like here, so that didn't help. ETA: btw, we just didn't want to mess with sand, rock, mulch, etc. so we chose to just have it on grass. Regardless of what you do, you'll most likely end up having to grow new grass and we didn't want to have to clean out the other stuff first. I guess you could say we chose the lazy way. ;) Sheri :)
  12. I live in the same town (after living in a couple other states after college) & I'm only 5 minutes away from my childhood home. The kids and I drive by once in a while and then I always end up crying when I see how the people have let the yard & house go. :crying: Don't tell me to stop doing it because not only am I nostalgic, I'm also a glutton for punishment. lol
  13. I've lost an inch as well. I think it happened over time throughout my 30's. Even though my posture's not bad now, it's worse than when I was on the high school dance/drill team! I'm fairly active with aerobic type exercise, but have been bad about stretching, core strengthening, & weight bearing activity. Maybe I'll integrate that into my workouts and try to grow an inch....upward, that is! I sure as heck don't need that inch anywhere else! :tongue_smilie: Sheri :)
  14. It would be a bit much for me, too. Although, I've been there. Even with allowing only one type of music lesson (piano for all 3 dd) and one physical activity lesson (tennis for all 3), since they were all in different levels of tennis, we ended up spending 6 out of 7 days at the racket club. It was to the point that the guys at the front desk would tell us they put cots out for us since we practically lived there! Piano was a little better because dd #2 & #3 did their 1/2 hour lessons back to back once a week. Dd#1 did hers on a different day. This school year we didn't do tennis at all. It was SO nice to only have one day of piano lessons! My belief is that we sometimes think more is better for our kids. I learned that it wasn't the case with my own, so I made some changes. Only you will know what is manageable for your family at any given point in time. Could you try cutting back in the upcoming school year just to see if it makes a difference? Sheri :)
  15. Rebellious is an understatement. I've been waiting 10 years for her to get out of the terrible two's!! :001_unsure: If she doesn't want to do something, she doesn't and she doesn't care what consequence she gets (until it comes right down to it anyways). If I take away time with a friend, she'll say she doesn't care, then loses it when the friend asks to play and I stick to my word and say no. She does work at a little bit of a slower pace in some subjects, but she's a math whiz, so she's not slow with that. She's never been much of a reader, but she recently found a series she enjoys so she's been devouring them!:hurray: It has been so cool seeing her excited about it. She's a perfectionist like her Mom, stubborn like her Mom and Dad, serious like both her Grandfathers, quick-tempered like her Mom, she takes everything personally and her feelings are easily hurt like her Mom. She's also had a will of steel from the day she was born and had to fight to breathe not just once, but on 2 separate occasions during those first many hours. I refer to her as my 'mini-me', only on a much grander scale. One of her strongest traits is that she's so good with kids and is an awesome babysitter....but I wouldn't want any of those impressionable kids to see her during our school days!! :scared: We do fine one-on-one for the most part, but not school. Dh pretty much taught her to read and he's the math teacher (for all 3 dd). A typical situation with the 2 of us ... English, for example, goes like this: she asks for help, so I read the directions for what she's doing, then look at the one she's having trouble with and walk/talk her through it to help her arrive at the answer. By that time all h^ll has broken loose and it's down hill from there. She leaves the room saying I don't ever help her and that I'm no teacher. :( This is too long already and I feel bad writing this because I don't want to sound like I'm bad-mouthing my dear sweet daughter. She will mature & we will both learn to bridle our tongues a little more. I've learned a lot about that in the last couple years and have come a long way, but she knows me way to well...... Thanks for "listening." Sheri :)
  16. I chose the "wouldn't buy sofa and loveseat" simply because of space issues. Our current set-up is a love seat and 2 oversize chairs in the living room. We had a couch and loveseat in there when we had 'hand-me-down furniture from the in-laws, but they sat in the same spot for a lot of years! At least with what we have now, we can set it up 3 different ways. We also have a red microfiber sectional in our itty bitty family/tv room. I love, love, love brown! Sheri :)
  17. Nice idea! Just in the last couple days I decided on Henle for dd's first year of high school Latin. Sheri :)
  18. Yes, I'm very lucky. But, that was an advantage of getting married in our late 20's, vs. early 20's. He had lots of time living on his own and having to do all that stuff. However, I won't let him near the washing machine -- to many shrunk shirts and pink undies & socks that weren't pink to start with! :tongue_smilie: I'd rather do the laundry the way my Mom taught me! As for the other confession - I'm a dunce when it comes to making the multi-quote option work on these boards! Sheri :)
