  1. Jen that is incredible, congratulations to your dd! If I remember your previous posts, you wanted her do enjoy the meet, as little pressure as possible for that kind of situation. So, double congrats! Dd is hiking today. Up a mountain and on icy ground. Not sure I could keep up with the group, so I opted to stay home. All I do is drive in a heated car. Doesn't seem like much, but is about four hours of driving. Beautiful drive -- there are sheets of waterfall looking ice cascading down 50' plus sheer rock escarpments. I have no idea how this happens. Dinner tonight is s the leg of lamb we had planned for last night, when everyone was too tired for a real dinner. Also, yesterday we went to the local Lindt store for Valentine's chocolates. We got some extra and ate them.... who wants a big dinner after that? Kids are old enough now that they want quality over quantity. No more conversation hearts, lol. Still getting into picture framing and hanging. Spent some time on the Ook site yesterday evening looking at picture hanging options. Watched Ook tv (I am not kidding). Thinking of finding my mat cutting apparatus and upgrading matting on my pix (and refreshing my skills, lol).
  2. When you say your identity was stolen, do you mean financial info, or social security number, dob, etc. How do you know it was stolen? Did a company notify you or has someone tried to use your identity? Do report to local police. A police report may be needed to claim losses. Be aware of medical identity fraud. Notify your insurance carrier and monitor claims. If you are receiving public benefits, notify appropriate agencies. A tactic of identity thieves, especially at this time of year, is to file taxes in your name and get any refund coming. So filing your own taxes now could help. The Federal Trade Commission publishes a book called 'Taking Charge: What To Do If Your Identity is Stolen.' I picked up a copy somewhere (public library?), not sure if it is online. I would change online passwords, btw. People can get some info from your wireless network with a handheld device if they are nearby. Or install a keystroke logger if they gain access to your computer, either physically or through malware. The possibilities are endless, not LOL. The trickiest thing, as I understand it, is if someone who is arrested uses your id. That can be very difficult to untangle, especially across state lines. Hence, your initial report to police. If a company has told you your credit card may have been compromised, it's much less serious, and you have probably already done what is necessary. Fraudulent credit transactions are covered by card issuers. Good luck! ETA Monitor your actual accounts, change numbers if necessary, and pull credit reports on a regular basis. A lot of credit card issuers let check your overall credit score online, so a change would be indicative of problems. You may not want to use your checking account for online payments. And -- my personal opinion -- I don't like debit cards.
  3. I needed some glass for picture frames. So I called Michaels and AC Moore to get prices -- $24 for a 16" x 24" piece of regular glass (not museum or conservation glass). Maybe I just got an uninformed person, but that seemed inordinately high. I had to go to Dick Black for some painting materials for the tole chandelier I'm restoring, so I looked at glass there. Same size piece was under $8 -- and they have a 20% discount this weekend. What a relief! I also found a tiny shop that will rewire my chandelier for $15 -- welcome news, as I was having difficulty with step one, getting the components apart.
  4. Check my supplies for retiring some table lamps. Go to electric supply shop for supplies for retiring a small chandelier. Leg of lamb for dinner, one of our favorite meals. Will roast with baby turnips and baby potatoes. Something green -- dd has been wanting leeks, so perhaps braised leeks. Find recipes for Valentine's Day. I made my own coeur a la creme recipe that I like better than any printed ones. The recipe is jotted down on a piece of paper that I hope is in my recipe file. Type it and store safely on computer! Continue going through old art supplies. We don't need Crayola colored pencils when we have Prismacolor. And so on.
  5. I was going to suggest a little hammer, but I like your idea better.
  6. Snow and rain yesterday ----> black ice today, road accidents, delayed school openings. Of course, later today is college alumni interview for Ds, quite a ways away, along an interstate. Ice will probably be gone by then, thank goodness. Interview is near a Costco, so I will not be able to put off my Costco trip any longer. Dinner will be Costco inspired. Yesterday I went up to my attic. It's the kind of attic with pull down stairs, ugh, so strange and unfamiliar up there. I found an *entire* box of baby blankets. I can no longer imagine on what planet I was when I thought these might be useful someday. So, added blankets to growing donations pile. Will stay home as much as possible today and do home stuff, which I actually rather enjoy.
  7. Go to several meetings today, nice parent groups. Wait for snow and hope it's only a dusting. Chicken satay for dinner. ETA Sorry about flood!
  8. My sympathies to those with broken keyboards and dishwashers! Yesterday did not go as planned. I will put off trip to Goodwill until I have even more bags -- it is far away and not hear anything I want to do. But when I was decluttering basement, a happy moment. You have to be a non Kondo person to understand. The complete set of every color of poster paint that I decided to throw out at last had dried up!! What an easy decluttering decision! I used this as inspiration yesterday to clear out more and plan to continue today. I enjoy watching the garbage truck guys throw my heap of black plastic bags into their truck. This isn't the best thing in my day, LOL, but it is still nice. Check email. Some colleges are wanting more financial forms. Every college has different requirements. Not rocket science, but requires some care. ETA Set aside some time to find out why my health insurance shows premium as past due when it has been paid, confirmation number, email of confirmation number, and record of payment with credit card company. If I cannot get a human to respond, I suppose I will write a letter and go to post office to send it certified. Update I reached a HUMAN at my insurerance company. They have a record of my payment, thank goodness. The glitch is that the consumer website has not been updated to reflect the *December* payment.
  9. Thank for the recommendation. I did not realize they were so esteemed, lol. Thank goodness I saved two of them. Years ago, an estimate to refurbish them was in the low hundreds, iirc. It seemed a lot at the time, but compared to the top of the line Miele's -- a pittance. Yes, they are combersome. I do not love vacuuming!
  10. Goodwill. Before I go, add items to my donations spreadsheet, because I hate trying to find scraps of paper with donation lists at tax time. Stop by Dick Blick to get paints for restoring old tole chandelier, the kind with metal flowers. This weekend I skimmed a book on tole painting on Amazon. The book recommended JoSonja paints. Their product list was a bit confusing, so I will call company and see if I can get some help before I shop. I think this chandelier should also be retired, but I'll do that later. Activity this evening, so I will do a simple sheet pan dinner that has worked nicely for me. https://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-sheet-pan-chicken-red-potatoes-and-sage-235985
  11. Thank you for the feature list! Wow, $1499 for a vacuum. At hat price, I can't imagine asking kids to help vacuum.... It might be worth spending $$ to get my old Electrolux refurbished.
  12. Read the books I got from library yesterday. Two translations of the Iliad, Lattimore and Fagles, plus a book about Homer. But, I have to confess that I am actually absorbed by a new book of P D James short stories, lol. Leisurely breakfast and newspapers. Would like to stay home, but have some driving to do. Dd and I may be able to squeeze in some antiquing.
  13. So what Miele model does WTM recommend? Pretend cost was not a consideration.
  14. This is a day of leisure. Leisurely breakfast, buttermilk pancakes for dd, oatmeal and eggs for me, NYT puzzles Leisurely trip to library, browse new books and pick up a few planned books I am amazed at how few copies of the Iliad our library system has, but I did find a Lattimore translation. I have one packed away somewhere, but my chances of finding it are slim. I started last night with the only kindle Iliad available, Alexander Pope's. I've always liked Pope, but have never read his Iliad. I've forgotten so much -- I had to look up every name. In the beginning, Chryses asks Agamemnon to give back his kidnapped daughter. Agamemnon refuses. It amused me that Chryses reaction was pretty much that of the father who attacked Larry Nassar in court yesterday. Today, dd and I will also putter about her room, tidying, adding a few hooks to her closet, little stuff. Oh, and change her bedding. I gave her LL Bean flannel sheets for Xmas, and she only wants these now, so quick wash and remake.
  15. Good for you. I am not a patient shopper, but I donate a fair bit. I am always hoping my stuff goes to good homes (materialistic, I know), so your post made me smile. My kids always had Squall parkas when they were little, loved them.
  16. Oh, my apologies! I thought you were making at dig at my vacuum and health standards, lol. I really dislike vacuuming, so my dust exposure that was is minimal. I have two old Electrolux canisters. I wonder if I should have them refurbished?
  17. I'd be interested in what others think, but the witnesses requirement sounds odd to me, as many divorces reach the settlement stage through meetings of the parties and their attorneys, rather than in court with witness testimony. (One reason people try to avoid court, if at all possible, is that attorneys have to be paid for sitting about waiting for case's turn.) Or is this a case where dh says that a disability does not exist? I can see how that would complicate things. Do you have medical records that would support a diagnosis? Usually, if you have a doctor visit or get a prescription, there is a diagnosis. If you have insurance that is.... or do you not have medical insurance? I am sorry for what you are going through.
  18. Advanced filtration -- not that I am aware of. Bill, but I think you knew that? I am not disagreeing about quality of Miele machines. But if someone's price point is not up to a Miele, there are alternatives. Personally, I find it soothing to use a broom and a carpet sweeper, lol. And I have always wanted to take small rugs outside and beat them, but have not done so yet.
  19. Not really liking, but sympathizing. It would be nice if provider requirements could be waived in an epidemic. You'd think insurers would do everything possible to prevent illness.
  20. In our area, urgent care clinics are an easy option. Best of both worlds, imo. Easy online appointments, plus trained staff. So that would be another place to check, if insurance covers it.
  21. I'm looking to upgrade my vac at some point, no urgency, so good to hear the Miele recs, as that is what I had in mind. But, op, in the meantime, I could make one suggestion -- a smaller size Shop-Vac. They come with lots of attachments and inhale fairly large objects, lol. You can also buy additional mini attachments. They were never designed for carpeting. (I have bare floors and oriental type area rugs.) The downside for you would be no retractable cord. And they are a bit awkward. But the smaller (but still powerful) models cost about $50, iirc. I went through a few cheaper Shark machines that I practically had to force feed dust into, even after cleaning hose and so on, before Shop Vac.
  22. I just lost an hour of my life listening to an unending series of recordings from health insurance company, which apparently does not employ actual human beings on Fridays. The recording and web site say that I am in good standing, but owe them a large premium payment. I have the payment confirmation and credit card bill for same. I know from previous mistakes that the health insurer contracts out billing to another company so I think I will be in for multiple more calls next week. Not the end of world -- we are all healthy, thank goodness -- but irritating. Grrr.
  23. Out of the most of day. Dinner will be leftover green curriy with chicken. Turned out rather blah, so I have to figure out how to add some flavor to it. The recipe sounded good, but I don't have much experience with East Asian cooking (almost none), so I am not sure what went wrong. ☹ï¸â˜¹ï¸â˜¹ï¸ https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/easy-green-curry-with-chicken-bell-pepper-and-sugar-snap-peas
