  1. I KNOW YOU!!!! LOL glad you are getting better responses here then on FB!
  2. This is great in theory! I purchased a Nook 1st release back in the day when they were $250 and that was a great deal... Since then I have read 2 books on it. I really love books, holding them, smelling them etc. I know its weird but all the technology out there will not get me to read a book on it. I just can't. Even the free ones I end up buying printed just so my kids will love books. There is something about a real book I just can't get passed. When I pick up super old books I image all the hands it must have passed through and the people that read it. I am weird.
  3. We kicked it up a notch in some ways and down in others. My daughter is ahead in some areas and behind in others. This is partially because I didn't bring her home until 2nd grade.
  4. Nevermind. I thought that I had only missed one word when I went through and my husband read it and said he didn't know what "roth" was and I was like I don't either! I just went back to copy the sentence and I was right! It said 10th of April not roth! LOL and he is the one who has read all the greats! LOL
  5. Have any of you ever followed the guidelines for The Well Educated Mind? In college I took every literature class and dropped it because I knew I had no clue what was going on even though I have a 4.0 average in all my other classes. I eventually got through a literature class however, in homeschooling my kids I want to be the best I can and I have always had a thirst for knowledge. I first wanted to read through history at a higher level than my 9 year old was doing so I purchased All Through the Ages so I could get some of the upper level books as my daughter read through the Sonlight books. I picked up The Well Educated Mind after I finished The Well Trained Mind through the logic year, as that is what I need for my daughter right now. I had no idea that it was basically what I was looking for a curriculum for adults! So I just finished chapter two. I am going to look up some of the recommendations they made and then I am going to work from where ever I fall. I have often wanted to participate in the book a week thing but I can't read a book a week not with my schedule. So I was wondering if anyone would want to partake/embark on/or be discussion partner in any of these books with me. I am going to start with the "Reading through History with a Novel' portion. This would involve being very frank, open and honest about where we each stood. I think it could be very encouraging. For example: I read through the timed paragraph in 1 min 24 seconds and didn't know the meaning of 2 words but was able to figure out what one of them was via context clues. The other I am still trying to find the meaning of as the dictionary & internet do not even seem to know. I currently own Phonics Pathways but it is in storage and I won't have it until March 3rd but knowing that I struggle with sounding out words I am going to use it as suggested. I am going to spend my time in the following ways: 15 min reading Phonics Pathways 10 min Working on Wordly Wise ( I have to read through the online lists to see where to start I am sure I will not like it though LOL) 10 min Vocabulary from Classical Roots ( My daughter is currently doing Song School Latin so I am sure me working on this program will help with the other.) 30 min reading the Well Educated Mind Plan. I am thinking of adding Journal reflection in for myself as well. However, I will start with this and work forward. Anyone done this? or interested in doing it?
  6. I am just now diving into this. I am curious if anyone has a suggestion for mapping out a week? Can you tell me how you use it in your homeschool?
  7. I have been looking at this program for 2 years now... But we are still in FLL ... I plan on doing it for 5th grade... I think you just need the Instructor's guide, student book and workbook unless you enjoy testing your kiddo... That is all I will be purchasing
  8. today I threatened to throw all things crafts away as the paints, glue, fabric and scissors were left out on the dining table when I was getting ready to put dinner on the table... the mess continued into the livingroom with all my 11month olds toys... and then behind the couch all the art supplies were strewn all over... pipe cleaners paint brushes, glue, necklace making items, clay, model magic... did I mention her room looked like a tornado hit it.... did I mention my girls are 9years and 11months... LOL
  9. I see in your signature line that you used sl with your littles... can I suggest doing either core B+C with him next year (and get the Lesson Planner and Workbook that go with A Child's History of the World from an online store) (he may also really like the 4/5 readers)... I have found with my daughter being on the upper end of the SL core has kept her truly engaged.... I also add in other stuff like videos and games... lots of stuff from BBC online... we are in Core C and finishing Vikings this week... I added Viking Sagas from BBC online for kids and I bought the Lesson Planner and Workbook that go with A Childs History of the World and so we will be playing a matching (harder than it sounds) game and we started a clay Viking ship yesterday that she baked and is going to paint today.... This she has loved better than any of the other programs I have tried with her.... For Science at this age I bought Science Saurus for 4-6 graders and we do each topic and add in books and kits and the Magic School Bus and Wild Kratts and some Videos from Amazon Prime... it has been a great year! Wish you the best!
  10. Love Math in Focus and I will never use anything else... I just have a question for others who use it or Singapore Math... do you ever skip things.... I feel like we have been doing this program for 2.5 years now and somethings she can whiz right through now like multiplication of 6,7,8, and 9 came super easy since she learned how the others worked... word problems are a snap... so I have always done the lesson and guided practice... then she does the Lets practice problems... if she doesn't struggle she speeds through the workbook that day... if not I save the workbook for the next day... there has only been one occasion I have ever had to use other problems to help her learn a topic... Today we did Real-World Problems Two step problems with multiplication... for the first time ever she is going straight to the workbook after the guided practice... but I feel like she has it and there is no reason to dwell on the topic... I guess we will know for sure once I check her work.... but I am curious what you have done with your kiddos!
  11. My daughter was 7 and in second grade when we started homeschooling then... and I am the same what ... I let her choose from things I have pre screened... lots of times I let her choose topics... and then I build off that... We went through a time were I was considering other things.. so I did trials of each and she told me what she liked about them and we went from there...she is 9 now
  12. Well they have the Readers Guides for Grades 1-4/5
  13. First Language Lessons 2 may be a good fit for grammar... its fun and lays a great foundation... we are secular and use sonlight so I am of no help there unless you like Story of the World... We used that and loved it... we have also used Pandia Press Science in the past... I am an advocate of it and I have Earth and Space listed in the classifieds if you are interested... they have free samples on their website too so you can try them before you buy... its pretty awesome..
  14. My dd currently nine struggled with spelling because she spells phonetically... she started reading very young... So I started her with AAS at 8 and a half.... I started her in Level 1 to lay the foundation... i explained that she will likely master a lesson in a day but we are still doing them all and she is okay with that... we do 2-3 lessons a week and she does master them that quick...writing is daunting but its also not a human inate ability it is learned and should be entered into slowly... and at their speed... at least that is what they are teaching me in college...I had mine write in a journal that I never looked at...what ever she wanted to.. every day (school day) for fifteen minutes for a year... not for me to check or anything... just so she could enjoy writing... at the end of the year she wanted me to look at... so i did... sometimes she wrote stories... sometimes she just wrote the letters of the alphabet... now she writes for fun... that was just last year... this year we are doing some dictation and every once in a while drawing a picture and a narration regarding something she has learned... she even writes letters to friends... hope this helps
  15. My husband it an officer in the Army and we could not live like that! I promise you that is not standard...amazing don't get me wrong... but not the norm
  16. we had barbque chicken with rice...love sweet baby rays!
  17. Sonlight? I love their guides.. I can pick up and school without thinking its wonderful!
  18. We loved the wheel on the school read it while we were moving and visiting family...
  19. My daughter loved first language lessons 1 and 2 we are now doing 4... she is able to recall from memory quite easily the definitions of all parts of speech and list them... this comes in handy when we are doing other work as well... personally I think college would have been so much easier had my mom made me learn fll in such a fun way versus sending me to CCD and having to memorize the act of contrition... just saying
  20. I have asked her and she likes them both.... I have asked similar questions here before... I totally over bought for 4th grade LOL... I think I am going to go with the original plan and see how that goes... I just wish I could buy ONE curriculum and be happy... it never seems to go that way though... I was trying to decide because of the differences in the way the history plays out in the two curriculum... So I think I am going to go with.... MBTP LA AAS Word Roots FLL4? still debating... SL History Readers and read alouds...& Science with substitutions in SCI MIF Latin For Children Artistic Pursuits 4
  21. We have dabbled in both and I credit SL with my daughters love for reading... However, we have recently completed a few unit studies with MBTP at the recommendation of a friend when i was looking for a new LA curriculum... However, I was thinking of making a full transition to Moving Beyond the Page for Social Studies and Science as well. I have until December to decide. However, I have already purchased Sonlight Core D and 3/4 of it are in storage because we are moving in March... So do I take the plunge into MBTP and sell SL when we move or stick with MBTP for LA and SL for History and Science? OR do I take the plunge and still use the readers and read alouds from SL along with MBTP? Any ideas are welcome however I would really like to hear from folks who have used one or the other or both. TIA
