  1. I also like Scully Mulder 2016, Choose the Form of the Destructor, and Vote Whig. I saw this sign in someone's yard the other day and thought it very apropos as well. :D
  2. You guys rock! Thanks so much for all the input. I think I'll treat myself to some new shirts. :) I laughed out loud at the shirts you posted, too. :D
  3. ...because I love them. Give it to me straight. I'm in my early 40's. Am I too old to wear shirts from places like Threadless and Snorg? They are generally paired with a denim skirt, sneakers, and a hoodie if it's cold.
  4. I'm sorry, but this made me laugh out loud. Who exactly is threatening to invade us and force us to eat McD's?
  5. Here is the transcript of an excellent Q&A session with Kaepernick, covering a lot of ground. He goes into detail about his thought processes and motivations. Some posters have suggested that Kaepernick has not faced racism himself, which is not true: "Q: Have you ever been pulled over unjustly or had a bad experience in that regard. K: Yes. Multiple times. I mean, I’ve had times where one of my roommates was moving out of a house in college and because we were the only black people in that neighborhood, the cops got called and all of us had guns drawn on us. I mean, came in the house without knocking, guns drawn, on one of my teammates and roommates. So I have experienced this. People close to me have experienced this. This isn’t something that’s a one-off case here, a one-off case there."
  6. A few updates: Kaepernick was joined by teammate Eric Reid last night in taking a knee during the National Anthem rather than sitting. Kaepernick: "As far as taking a knee tonight, Eric [Reid] -- as well as myself -- had a long conversation with Nate Boyer, who is a military vet. And we were talking to him about, 'How can we get the message back on track? And not take away from the military. ... But keep the focus on what the issues really are.' As we talked about it, we came up with taking a knee because there are issues that still need to be addressed and there was also a way to show more respect for the men and women that fight for this country. Once again, I'm not anti-American. I love America. I love people. That's why I'm doing this. I want to help make America better. I think having these conversations helps everybody have a better understanding of where everybody is coming from. Those conversations are important to have because the better we understand each other, the better we know each other, the better we can deal and communicate with each other which ultimately makes everyone, puts everybody in a better position." Teammate Reid: "He saw that it hurt people that he sat during the national anthem. There are people that actually put their lives on the line for this country to give us freedom. We talked for a couple days, to figure out a way to be more respectful of those people and the national anthem of the country while still maintaining the stance that there needs to be things done about these issues. And it was just today actually, a couple hours before the game, we were like, hey, why don't you take a knee and that way you're not isolated from the team, you're not sitting down during the national anthem, you're just changing your physical position, being more respectful to those people while still maintaining your stance on these issues. Nate agreed with that. That's how it happened." Kaepernick also pledged to donate his first million this year to charities that help communities in need. "I've been very blessed to be in this position and to be able to make the kind of money I do. And I have to help these people. I have to help these communities. It's not right that they're not put in a position to succeed or given those opportunities to succeed."
  7. He's addressed this: "This stand wasn’t for me. This stand wasn’t because I feel like I’m being put down in any kind of way. This is because I’m seeing things happen to people that don’t have a voice, people that don’t have a platform to talk and have their voices heard, and effect change. So I’m in the position where I can do that and I’m going to do that for people that can’t."
  8. Interesting! CNN has a slightly different take: "The mere mention of 'slave' is not entirely remarkable; slavery was alive and well in the United States in 1814. Key himself owned slaves, was an anti-abolitionist and once called his African brethren 'a distinct and inferior race of people.' Some interpretations of these lyrics contend Key was in fact taking pleasure in the deaths of freed black slaves who had decided to fight with the British against the United States. In order to bolster their numbers, British forces offered slaves their freedom in British territories if they would join their cause during the war. These black recruits formed the Colonial Marines, and were looked down upon by people like Key who saw their actions as treasonous.
  9. Niners coach Chip Kelly told reporters Saturday that Kaepernick's decision not to stand during the national anthem is "his right as a citizen" and said "it's not my right to tell him not to do something." The NFL also released a statement, obtained by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport: "Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000691077/article/colin-kaepernick-explains-why-he-sat-during-national-anthem
  10. I can't edit the wording used in the poll for whatever reason. Ah, well. I've seen news articles stating that a certain politician wants Kaepernick deported, but the politician himself did not use that word.
  11. Oops. Yes, I know he is a U.S. citizen. Will change it to "exiled."
  12. Or people of other religious persuasions (like me) who also don't salute the flag or say the Pledge? Understandably: No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
  13. Three "obligatory other" votes so far...should I add another option to the poll? If so, what?
  14. I'm curious on the Hive's response to football player Colin Kaepernick's refusal to stand during the National Anthem. He stated, "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder." Kaepernick clarified, "This stand wasn’t for me. This stand wasn’t because I feel like I’m being put down in any kind of way. This is because I’m seeing things happen to people that don’t have a voice, people that don’t have a platform to talk and have their voices heard, and effect change. So I’m in the position where I can do that and I’m going to do that for people that can’t." He's been called a traitor. One politician-who-will-not-be-named suggested he "find a country that works better for him." An NFL executive said "he hasn't seen this much collective dislike among front office members regarding a player since Rae Carruth [who is in prison for plotting to murder his pregnant girlfriend]." There is much speculation that he will be cut. I find the fact that he might lose his job over this shocking and reprehensible. He's expressed his views in a peaceful way and been vilified for it. All of this because he won't stand up during a song? Seriously? Please weigh in. :)
  15. I don't think there's anything morally wrong with large age differences (assuming both parties are adults), but for my own daughter, I'd start feeling uncomfortable if there was more than a 10- or 15- year difference. Naveen Andrews (from Lost) dated Barbara Hershey for 12 years; there was a 21-year age difference. That's all I've got. :)
  16. There are some available on eBay. I searched for "fleece-lined" hoodie.
  17. I can't argue with that, but don't you think people can change? Granted we're talking about a fictional character here, but still... Admittedly, I was surprised that Nancy ended up with Steve, too, but sometimes the heart wants what it wants. :D ETA: My husband agrees with you. I was all like, "Steve told off his friends, cleaned up the graffiti, and risked his LIFE! What do you people want from him?" My husband's response was, "More than that." He added that while Steve is a d-bag on the right path, he is still a d-bag.
  18. Red soda, red carbonated beverage...the one I drank in college (often during all-nighters) was called Tahitian Treat. I also remember drinking red cream soda at the public pool every summer. Good times, but, man, that stuff was toxic. :)
  19. I'll second all-nighters. Hair spray. Red pop. That Nine Inch Nails concert.
  20. Praise the Lord! Thanks for the update!!! :hurray: :hurray: :hurray:
  21. I've begged, too, to no avail. Apparently the rural midwest is not their target market. I miss you, Trader Joe's! :crying:
  22. Warning, spoilers: Creators of Stranger Things Shed New Light on the Fate of a Couple Characters [barb and Brenner]
  23. Stranger Things t-shirts on Snorg Tees (see "New This Week")! Love!!!
  24. That's a good point. Romans 6:12 comes to mind: "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires." A lot depends on whom (or what) we are obeying and why.
  25. Yep, some of my older relatives received a call just like that. Scammy McScammersons at work.
