  1. While I did use OPGTR with my oldest, I'm sure there are other resources similar that perhaps your library has. Even though I learned to read using phonics myself, there was so much I had forgotten that having a book teach the rules was very beneficial. It meant I did not have to rely on my memory of rules!
  2. My oldest finished phonics halfway through first. Now we do All About Spelling and lots of reading. I anticipate my second dd being like your son. She has finished AAR 1 and is not quite 4 years old.
  3. I got it and even with the kit, it is a lot of set up. However, dd really likes it. She hasn't had it out in awhile, but once we are back into school, I'm sure she will use it more. I'm hoping she does anyway or it wasn't worth the great amount of time.
  4. I had my youngest last November 9th. It was ideal timing bc we took school completely off for more than a month (some of that was thanksgiving break), did a week or so of light school in December (mostly because dd was bored and needed the work!). I then took of 2-3 weeks for Christmas. A total of 7 or so weeks off. I only had a first grader in actual school. My others are younger.
  5. Does anyone know how often these sales come along? I see lots I might use but don't want to get a ton, since I know I can't use it all right now.
  6. Ours is approx. $100 for the whole school year per child, plus maybe $30 for books for my oldest. It is a bit more for higher grades with lab sciences and such, but nothing like you we're talking. It runs on mandatory volunteer work of the parents (but isn't that what a co-op is anyway!) Some parents have degrees but not all. I could not afford $800-$1000 per child!
  7. Aar1 goes pretty quickly over letter sounds. I think the first lesson has s,m,p and a, maybe? If your child knows her letter sounds pretty well, I think it would be a great place to start. Dd calls it her "fun, fun, fun" school and has been asking for it throughout the summer. Within a few lessons, she was blending well. Now, she loves to pick up easy readers and read on her own.
  8. Thanks for the replies. I'm going to a fellow homeschool mom's house to look over her copy of the program and will look at scope then.
  9. Dd just finished Aar1. Budget is tight(so buying aar2 might be difficult), and a friend has offered Sing, Spell, Read and Write for me to borrow. I'm having trouble finding the scope and sequence of SSRW, so I don't know which, if any, level would nicely follow AAR1. I'd also considered Explode the Code, but someone told me ETC doesn't teach phonics rules. Based on those samples, dd is ready for ETC 3 or so. Help anyone?
  10. My oldest dd was a fluent reader before we started AAS. She did level 1 in about 6-8 weeks and Level 2 in a few months. We will start level 3 at the beginning of 2nd grade, and I anticipate it raking half the year. Plus, we will probably spend the first few weeks of school reviewing. My second dd will be starting younger, so I expect more like 1 year per level for her.
  11. Yes! The biggest change is ditching a formal math curriculum for 2nd grade to do lots of living math, aiming to bring back the joy and fun to math instead of tears.
  12. Hi. I'm purposefully resurrecting an old thread to see how everyone liked the first full school year of Beast Academy 3 being available, for those who started it last year and finished this past school year. Any thoughts after using the program for a year?
  13. The only one I've made work is Math Mammoth. For everything else, it's a waste because I just never get around to it!

  15. AAR1 is working well for my dd. She reads from the readers with the program, Abeka readers and Bob books. If she comes across a word she hasn't learned the rule for yet (bc of different scope and sequence), I simply tell her the word and a quick reason why it says what it does... "Sometimes, "kn" says "/n/" and the k is silent." She calls AAR her "fun, fun, fun" school.
  16. 1st Child : K12 Phonicsworks and OPGTR 2nd Child: AAR Pre and 1 (still in one) I plan on using AAR with children 3 and 4 when they are ready.
  17. Ellie, do you know if there is a way to get the activity cards and teacher's guide with the c-rods? We have tons of rods. Thanks!
  18. Denise, your post piqued my interest, so I checked out your blog. I'm completely intrigued! DD really enjoys playing math, like playing store (we take turns as customer and store keeper, so she gets both sides of it). She loves to help me cook and measure things. I'm sending you a message!
