  1. Chronic unemployment (not due to health, disability, recession, temporary layoff, etc) would be my deal breaker.
  2. In total agreement; this isn't the Oppression Olympics.
  3. ETA: I see the ChocolateReign beat me to it and was much more eloquent. Are you for real?! A previous poster who wrote that one cannot compare what Hitler did to slavery and that person is correct. Although both were atrocious, slavery was MUCH worse. The Holocost lasted 4 years and most Jews received reparations. Some Jewish people received reparations from us, Americans! https://rollingout.com/2015/10/07/obama-administration-earmarks-12-million-reparations-holocaust-survivors/ Slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, lynching, et al last over 400 years! And where are the reparations? The Japanese received reparations, Native Americans, Jews; just about all but black people. Slavery was genocide. 10-15%+ of the slaves died during the middle passage. I am sure that many of those who survived the passage wished they had died. http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/disp_textbook.cfm?smtid=2&psid=446 After slavery, when blacks tried to better themselves over 800 THRIVING black neighborhoods were destroyed, Black Wall Street (Kansas), CHARLOTTESVILLE, just to name a few. https://timeline.com/charlottesville-vinegar-hill-demolished-ba27b6ea69e1 It was mentioned that the Civil War was not about slavery but about freedom. FREEDOM TO DO WHAT? Well, let's look at a few articles of cessation shall we? Mississippi: In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course. Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sunn http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_missec.asp Alabama: One section reads: SLAVERY Section 1. No slave in this State shall be emancipated by any act done to take effect in this State, or any other country. NO, slavery was not waning in the South before the Civil War. The greatest producer of our white-black wealth gap, in modern times, was/is (and things snowballed from there): 1) The New Deal where 85-90% of blacks were barred from receiving benefits 2) GI Bill (after WWII) - The greatest white affirmative action legislated in modern times. Yes, slavery and its aftermath is the primary reason for black poverty.
  4. Not a documentary but I have this chart hanging in my classroom: The Evolutionary tree of Religion Poster by Human_Odyssey
  5. My children took Barbarian Diagrammarian with Lukeion and it was EXTREMELY rigorous. I also had them take this course, which is very good but not as demanding as Lukeion: https://www.udemy.com/sentence-diagramming-from-beginner-to-expert-in-12-lessons/
  6. Thank you so much for the recommendations. Truthfully, one of the twins is an extreme extrovert and has been wanting to go to school for a while (and secretly, I am SO over homeschooling but will continue if I must). I am currently looking at a couple of private schools and a few STEM charter schools. Thank you, again!
  7. Yes, he will be done with those courses by the end of 6th grade and that is a concern for both of my twins, although the other will be done with Algebra 2 (Intermediate Algebra) or Geometry. The problem is one of the twins wants to go to school. I am seeking out private and charter schools now. I don't know what I (we) are going to do.
  8. Following this topic as I am in a similar quandary. I have two that will be in the 7th grade next year. By then, one will have completed AoPS Calculus, the other AoPS Algebra B. They do not know how to write in cursive, nor have they memorized all the states in the US but know all the countries in the world by heart. They will have finished Lukeion Latin 1a and 1b and WWS I and II. So, I am concerned about where they will be placed as well as the loss of flexibility. Thank you for asking what has been weighing on my mind and in my heart.
  9. Just wondering what you all are doing, if anything, for public speaking for the kiddos. Thanks
  10. "I don't live here, I am the nanny", said to solicitors.
  11. Take a look: And, no, the sound clarity is not caused by the person who uploaded the video to YouTube, this is exactly how it sounded. The cartoonish interface is another NO! The entire program IS that cartoon. The weird noises, that they probably think are cute, in the background were so distracting! The feedback required after every module was just awful. The kids just type in their thoughts on the module that they just listened to. They had the ability to put a period into each field, if they wanted to, and move on. My first child finished the whole program in just a few days and did not learn a thing (this child LOVES to learn), I knew I couldn't put my second child through it as there would be tears through out the entire learning process. Heck, I was nearly in tears. Yes, this was THE worst homeschooling purchase ever and I have purchased some doozies!
  12. I bought it, 1-2 years ago, and it was my worst purchase EVER. Just terrible. I bought two seats, one for each child. My first child finished the program within a few days and I asked for a refund for the second child. Awful.
  13. Thank you for the responses! I never took regentrude's statement to mean that he did not have to take Intermediate Algebra ever. My question was if he could succeed at PreCalc while either a) studying Int. Algebra at the same time or b) swing back and do Int. Algebra after PreCalc. So it appears that he can take PreCalc with Int. Algebra or take Int. Algebra after PreCalc but Int. Algebra is a MUST before Calculus. Do I have this right? Thanks again!
  14. Yes, sort of. He will have completed the geometry course, online, in about 5 weeks.
  15. He took AoPS Introduction to Algebra courses, both A and B, and did very well. Will this be enough?
  16. Thank you! He is doing the Int. Algebra book on his own now and wants to attend the PreCalc class in April. He will be about 3/4 of the way through Algebra when the PreCalc class begins.
  17. Has anyone taken or completed AoPS Intermediate Algebra and PreCalc at the same time? Would this be possible or would it be too much?
  18. I have the 2013 set and they are exactly 10" in height.
  19. Is this a trick question?
  20. According to this snippet from a news article, the photo was spread via text: "A private church-affiliated preparatory school in Greenville says a racist image of black students with nooses drawn around their necks was shared in text messages, according to school administrators." http://m.wyff4.com/news/student-expelled-after-sharing-racist-photo-at-upstate-private-school/32642904
  21. How do we know that if his black friends were "cool with it"? Especially since we now know that the photo was edited? I would like to see a news report stating that the boys were "surprised" or is this something that the offender came up with to try to get himself out of hot water.
  22. Oh, I agree that this has not been confirmed, but had he been a Muslim the headlines would be totally different and the the "wait and see" would not have applied.
  23. My boys are two minutes apart. It is difficult because the younger twin (we haven't told them who is older) is gifted, particularly in math and science.
